No eastern Slavic country has never joined NATO. Plus, no ex USSR country other than the 3 puny Baltic ones has ever joined NATO. Poroshenko should be ashamed of being a traitor of eastern Slavs. Let's be absolutely clear about one thing. NATO never ever takes a country that has territorial dispute.

. . .
For example, Georgia, Moldova.

I'm just saying that Greece has a territorial dispute with Turkey and it's a NATO country. And Turkey has a territorial dispute with Greece and the Kurds.

So it's more along the lines of "NATO doesn't take in countries that have territorial disputes that involve Russia in some way". xP

Putin just threatened nuclear attack. Don't think nato will fast track this membership.

This is not Disney land, it's Russia for world war 3 sake.

Maybe, at the time of induction, Greece and Turkey did not have territorial dispute, and afterwards they did. Could you mention what territorial disputes exist between Greece and Turkey? AFAIK, Kurds never declared independence from Turkey.

It's not JUST Russia. It's SCO which is the 21st century Warsaw Pact. NATO can beat Russia, but not SCO which is bigger in size in terms of territory and in terms of population.

Possibly. I'm too lazy to actually check the dates atm. And the Turks do fight against PKK from time to time, as far as I know PKK wants an independent Kurdistan that includes areas that Turkey currently has.

Well there are plenty of disputes, I'll just tell you about one of the main ones. It has to do with Greece's territorial waters. Territorial waters are basically the distance away from the shores that belong to a country. Foreign ships are free to go through territorial waters as long as they keep the international law, it's a term called "innocent passage". International law says that a country has the right to extend its territorial waters up to 12 nautical miles from its shores. Turkey is worried that Greece will take too much of the Aegean sea for itself if it extends its territorial waters to 12 nm. Both countries keep their territorial waters in the Aegean at 6 nm. Turkey has not signed this particular international convention so it claims that it has the right to not recognize Greek territorial waters past these 6 nm if Greece ever tries to extend them to 12. Greece however brings up the fact that the vast majority of the world's countries recognizes this treaty as unofficial/customary law and not as simply a treaty and thus Greece holds the right to extend its territorial waters. Turkey answers to this by saying that the Aegean has some "special geographical properties" that do not allow for this law to apply. Turkey has extended its territorial waters to all its coasts outside the Aegean to 12 nm. It also has said officially that if Greece decides to extend its territorial waters Turkey would see this as a reason to go to war, even though the charter of the UN clearly forbids the threat of force against territorial integrity of any country.

The territorial disputes are exactly the reason why Turkey and Greece both joined at the same time, belive me if there wasnt Nato our countrys would have had several wars in the last 5-6 decades.

And there is no territorial dispute with Kurds since there was no Kurdish state for at least a millenia now.

NATO was formed when Germany was divided into two countries. I'd call that a "territorial dispute". Also, Turkey and Greece. Also UK (N. Ireland, India, numerous other colonies), France (numerous colonies), Belgium (numerous colonies), US (Puerto Rico, at least), so on and so forth. Spain and the UK are still arguing about Gibraltar.

It would be more accurate to say that NATO is reluctant to add members with disputes.

Yea, NATO sure acts as a deterrent. And I just meant that the PKK is the one making the claim. Turkey did seem pretty positive in a possible creation of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq recently.
