You are being overoptimistic and somewhat miss the point in your assessment. Unless it categorically states Lahore or Karachi etc, it is always assumed to be Indian and English natives simply refer to our restaurants as "Indian". They even frequently call the Lahore/Karachi ones "Indian"!!! This is a longstanding error of our own. We have failed totally to market our culture, our cuisine.

Well do as I do...Lets go to a Pakistani restaurant and then I take them to something called Lahore...and then explain it to them!

Heck if I take a random cousin to an Irish bar/ pub I cant expect them to know about it until and unless one who lives/ understands or is there tells them!

So be Pakistan's brand ambassador!

Just to test my contention I googled 'Pakistan restaurents', Totonto, Canada to see how things are in North America. Guess what? They are about same as UK. If they are called 'Pakistani', inevitably most will have suffix/prefix of 'Indian'.

Maybe they just do have indian food...After all them indians dont even know what is North Indian food and sell Pakistani food under North Indian category!

The spices are diff - very slightly! I have cooked with a Gujarti colleague from India...Apart from her habit of throwing the whole spice thali in....I dont see much differences except they use SOME spices in excess and SOME they dont really put them in the order "I" do...

I am not even sure what is Indian food...North Indian tastes completely diff from South! Apart from the Martabak and dosa from South India I havent really tasted much of South food...

@waz I have been to Giftos in London. The restaurent is not branded as 'Pakistani'. I know it has 'Lahore' in it's name but Gifto's is rather ambigous about there branding which is often the trend with Pakistani owned establishments. I notice on TripAdvisor this [note most 'foreigners' will rely on such to note the heritage of the food. Notice 'Indian'. A indian would pull his two testicles out before he opens a restaurent in London with the name 'kolkata' and suffix iot with 'Pakistan'.

Very true. Actually dragging them to their favourite "Indian" restaurant and re-educating them is the way to go. Interestingly, I have found that English folks (or any white folks) who follow cricket are much less likely to make that faux-pas Indian-Pakistani mix up. They understand.

lolz...My supervisor was totally lost with geography or maybe he was a troll...not sure...On my 1st week after I settled ...he asks so "you can speak Arabic?" My mouth dropped open I wasnt sure how to respond...The first few words in my head was "You idiot" and "you gotta be kidding me"...But I was polite...I managed to pass

This hits the nail on the head. Fifty plus years of Pakistani self-hating in UK has led to this. Google assumes it is all "Indian" and when the description says "Kashmiri", it is further assumed to be "Indian". Note in particular how subconsciously the message permeates via the Internet that Kashmir is by default Indian!!!

Pakistani marketing sucks! BIG TIME!

The ambassadors for past 70 yrs couldnt be bothered to develop the brand! The British Pakistanis couldnt be bothered to do so either...I have taken it upon myself and urge every Pakistani individual take some responsibility...Believe me once you educate them...esp those who like food and spicy food...one bite and a bit of introduction - they will remember it for life!

I'm sorry but % wise...way more Pakistani run places use name "Pakistani" compared to BD run ones. That's the harsh truth in difference between you two people.

BD run places almost exclusively call themselves Indian....very rare to see a restaurant calling itself "Bangladeshi".

Of course there is room for improvement and more Pakistani run places to go by Pakistani in their name still (as OP article refers to). But it doesn't compare with you lot at all. Actually lets see one Bangladeshi restaurant person calling for his people to go by Bangladeshi over Indian in name....he would get laughed at and ignored. Whereas you can see the Pakistani reaction in this thread itself.

Just before last Christmas the staff at my gym went to works celebration at a 'Indian' restaurent. Later talking to one of the Polish trainer, she said to me "we went to Indian restaurent and had lovely meal". I know that particular chain belongs to a Pakistani. I find myself at length having to corrrect and explain to her. To which she retorted, slightly confused "why don't they call it Pakistani"? After all crappy Polish cuisine is always logged as 'Polish, not as Slovakian, Russian or Czech when there is precious little differance. Hell, I even notice 'Kurdistan restaurents' when no such country as that even exists right now.

Thanks. Case closed. And I don't need to look at their websites. I used to travel widely across UK. Everywhere I saw "Indian, Indian, Indian, Halal, Asian, Desi" restaurents. Maybe in month of months I might come across a Indian dash Pakistani restaurent.
