UAE Mars Mission will be great contribution to human knowledge: Mohammed

Whats with all the -ve reactions here???
U.A.E is pumping a lot of money towards higher education...Lots of international universities are opening their campuses in Dubai so in a few years they would have the human resources to pull this off !
Same is the case in Saudi Arabia with institutes like the King Saud University in Riyadh.

First, the question was about indigenous Satellites and NOT launching abilities, which I never claimed that Saudi have.

Saudi still own more Saudi made Satellites in space than Iran & Egypt combined, FACT.

This is not about owning satellites !

This is all about mastering key technologies ... not some satellites with imported parts !!!
You seem to be confused. The 14 Satellites are 100% made in SA
And no the matter that we were discussing was that SA can't make a working Satellite, which is false.
If you want to discuss another subject then say so.

So scientists from "which" countries have been "hired"?

A purely Emirati team composed of 150 engineers and scientists will work on the mission.

The Emirates Mars Mission team currently comprises 75 Emirati engineers and researchers and will grow to more than 150 by 2020.

BTW, you know how much time period required for mature SLV, that able to deliver good payload to Mars?

From Arab, I mean even a single Arab world has any experience about Space program. What a nonsense.

I can even say, India can build Star Trek like spaceship.

They hire some European company for manufacturing sat and spacex or Ariane for launching the sat.

The probe will orbit the Red Planet until at least 2023, with an option to extend the mission until 2025. It will send back more than 1000 GB of data to be analysed by teams of researchers in the UAE, and shared freely with more than 200 institutions worldwide for the benefit of thousands of space specialists.

The country’s first satellite designed and built by Emirati engineers, KhalifaSat, will soon start taking shape at a new satellite development facility in Dubai. Top officials at the Emirates Institution for Advanced Science and Technology (EIAST) announced the agency’s latest developments at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Yousuf Al Shaibani, Director General of EIAST, said: “KhalifaSat is a milestone for EIAST as well as the UAE. It will be an assessment of our capabilities in satellite manufacturing helping us position ourselves as leaders in satellite development and technology, regionally and internationally.”

KhalifaSat will be the third satellite launched by EIAST — making it the UAE’s most technologically advanced imaging satellite.

Emirati engineers working at a facility in South Korea have successfully completed the design of modules and sub-systems for the satellite.

“The project will be shifted from South Korea to the UAE once our new development facilities will be built here in Dubai.”

Testing for the new satellite is expected to partly take place in South Korea but manufacturing components will take place in Dubai. The manufacturing of the actual flight model of the satellite will follow in the final phase, which is expected to be ready for launch in 2017.

The institute has had a skills transfer arrangement with Satrec, a South Korean satellite maker, since 2006. A growing team of Emirati engineers have been based in Seoul, learning the engineering skills necessary to design and build a satellite.

I am sorry but your links prove nothing. First link was something reg engineers getting trained in Korea and they would design the third satellite in UAE and would be launched in 2015, which it havent done yet.

Second was the lack of any development labs in UAE like vibration and thermal room tests to be performed in a satellite. How come will be tested in UAE? Trust me , even many local universities in India have launched satellites with some university even have vibration and thermal soak test rooms. UAE have neither.

And paying for kids to getting trained in NASA wont help much, until UAE invests in its education. Building a 100kg satellite is easy. Any university can do it. But Mars is not.

If you invest in education, a complete "Arab" satellite to Mars might be possible after 2030.

Anything before that, its like a paint job.

Why can't they have scientists?

They cant have scientists with no education base, rational scientific labs . Necessary is the need of innovation.

When they get everything with a slash of money, I have never seen Arabs work hard for anything.

They can change, but it needs a lot of change in thought process.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has witnessed the unveiling of mission plan for the first Arab space probe to Mars.

The blueprints and science goals for the first Arab mission to Mars have been revealed for the first time. The probe, named 'Hope,' will create mankind’s first integrated model of the Red Planet’s atmosphere.

The announcement featured presentations from the Emirates Mars Mission team in the presence of high-level delegations headed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

"This probe represents hope for millions of young Arabs looking for a better future. There is no future, no achievement, no life without hope," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said, adding, "The Emirates Mars Mission will be a great contribution to human knowledge, a milestone for Arab civilisation, and a real investment for future generations."

The unmanned probe will leave Earth in 2020 on a mission designed to complement the science work of other missions and fill important gaps in human knowledge. Its unique orbits and instruments will produce entirely new types of data that will enable scientists to build the first truly holistic models of the Martian atmosphere. These models will help the global Mars science community to unlock more mysteries of the Red Planet, such as why its atmosphere has been decaying into space to the point that it is now too thin for liquid water to exist on the surface.

Besides deepening human knowledge about Mars, the data will also help climate scientists understand changes in Earth’s atmosphere over millions of years. This knowledge will also help space scientists to evaluate the atmospheres of thousands of newly discovered planets far across the galaxy, to determine which may have an atmosphere that could support extra-terrestrial life.

The Emirates Mars Mission will be the first to study dynamic changes in the Martian atmosphere throughout its daily and seasonal cycles. Its specialised instruments will enable scientists to observe weather phenomena such as clouds and dust storms, as well as changes in temperature, dust, ice and gases including water vapour throughout the layers of the atmosphere. They will learn for the first time how the atmosphere interacts with topography, from the highest volcano peaks to the vast deserts and the deepest canyons.

The probe will be a compact spacecraft the size and weight of a small car. It will blast off in a launcher rocket, then detach and accelerate into deep space. It will reach a speed of 126,000 kilometres per hour for the 600 million km journey around the Sun to Mars, which will take around 200 days.

The probe will orbit the Red Planet until at least 2023, with an option to extend the mission until 2025. It will send back more than 1000 GB of data to be analysed by teams of researchers in the UAE, and shared freely with more than 200 institutions worldwide for the benefit of thousands of space specialists.

The Emirates Mars Mission will leave behind a major legacy on Earth, because the mission is being planned and managed in the UAE by a 100 per cent Emirati team. In this way it is designed as a catalyst for a new generation of Arab scientists and engineers, and as an anchor project for the growing science and space sectors.

The Emirates Mars Mission team currently comprises 75 Emirati engineers and researchers and will grow to more than 150 by 2020.

"The Emirates Mars Mission is a strategic investment in our human capital and an investment in our human capital is a winning investment. Future generations will reap the rewards of our investment in science and knowledge," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said.

The Emirates Mars Mission will send three important messages, he added. "The first message is for the world: that Arab civilisation once played a great role in contributing to human knowledge, and will play that role again."

"The second message is to our Arab brethren: that nothing is impossible, and that we can compete with the greatest of nations in the race for knowledge."

"The third message is for those who strive to reach the highest of peaks: set no limits to your ambitions, and you can reach even to space."

Sheikh Mohammed announced that the probe would be called 'Hope,' a name chosen after the Arab world was invited to submit suggestions in a public campaign.

"We thank everyone who participated and wanted to be part of this great historic project to send the first Arab probe to Mars. Everyone who took part is a partner in this mission," Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said.

The Emirates Mars Mission team gave a full presentation about the project with all the science details in addition to a video about the journey to Mars.

Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and many other dignitaries were in attendance.

Also present was Dr. Khalifa Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the UAE Space Agency, who commented: "The UAE Space Agency, given its administrative and financial responsibility, will work side by side with the mission team and all the strategic partners to see this mission executed in the time given and the budget allocated through implementing best practice for space projects so that the mission achieves its purpose and goals."

These desert dewller can't help but mention Iran. Iranian satellites are made and launched by Iran.
The difficulty is not making these things but actually sending them to their required destination.
These desert dwellers are too stupid to accomlish a feat of launching such things.
They pay a western company to make it and another country to launch it and call it "Uae's contribution to human knowledge". These people should stick to playing with camel urine like their saudi brethren:
