UAE backs India's bid for permanent UNSC seat

The United Arab Emirates on Monday said that it fully backed India's bid for permanent membership in the reformed United Nations Security Council.

India has always maintained that a seat on the council would reflect the importance of the G20 nation as its trillion dollar economy helps stimulate global growth.

Recently, the UAE backed India's nomination as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

The issue of support at the UNSC came up during President Pratibha Devisingh Patil's meeting with her UAE counterpart Shekh khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nayhan on Monday.

President Patil is in the UAE from November 21-25 and this is her first State Visit to a Gulf State.

"The President thanked His Highness for UAE's support for India's recent election to the non-permanent seat of the Security Council and sought continued support for a permanent seat for India on an expanded UNSC," said Latha Reddy, Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs.

"His Highness stated that the UAE would certainly support India, which had the right to be a permanent member of reformed UN Security Council," she told reporters here.

Latha Reddy said that discussions were also held on the need for enhanced security cooperation particularly to address issues relating to counter terrorism and maritime security.

"Our President emphasized that the agreement on security cooperation should be signed as early as possible by the concerned ministries on both side," Latha Reddy said.

The UAE is a significant trading and energy security partner, and bilateral trade was valued at 43.4 billion dollar in 2009-10. In 2009-10, the UAE had emerged as India's top export destination, accounting for 13.41 per cent of the country's total exports. The country is also among the top five suppliers of crude oil to India.

The list of Muslim nations supporting India's UNSC aspirations keeps growing.

In April 2010, Morocco too supported India's permanent UNSC seat bid.

And some Pakistanis call them 'FRIENDS' & 'BROTHERS'......:undecided:

You can still call them brothers & friends ,dont you??
or

By your logic it is necessary that a country with friendly relation with pak can;t be friendly with india ??

On topic: Good move by UAE by supporting india, they know international diplomacy is not based on religion rather then on Future intrests and mutual benifit for both nations...

Another example of awesome indian diplomacy, i love it..

Actually there is wrong perception among Pakistani brothers that other Muslim countries do care for Pakistan, as Pakistan care for other Muslim countries & jump in to try to solve their problems & help them. I dont like this Muslim brothers theory, which has destroyed Pakistan, countries like China,Srilanka etc who are allies of Pakistan & support us always are not Muslims. From Muslim World i only see Turkey & Iran as true brothers of Pakistan who supported us always.

This is good news indeed. The GCC willing to lend its backing to India's candidature helps in large measure to build up moral support.

Remember there is no friend and no brother, everyone is a friend of money and power. Simple!!! we should start depending on ourself except anyone else.

Partially true.

In the first half of 2010, non-oil trade between India and UAE exceeded $20 billion.

Business : UAE-India H1 trade jumps 57% to $20.4b

This makes UAE the largest trading partner of India. Also, India is now the largest trading partner of UAE in terms of re-exports.

Additionally, UAE is the largest Arab foreign direct investor in India --

UAE Today - UAE-India’s Non-Oil Trade Exchange Grew By 57% To $20.4 Bn In H1

I stress that your comment is partially true because money is not everything here. More than 1.2 million Indians live and work in the UAE and quite a few of them are highly successful and influential. Secondly, the UAE also has deep historical links with India.

I find it amusing that Pakistanis would expect favoritism from Arab nations just because they are Muslim nations. Pakistanis keep forgetting the fact that India too has more than 150 million Muslims and India has maintained friendly relations with almost every Muslim country (except Pakistan, of course).

You hit the nail spot on; This is what I found some members doing here and I really appreciate your understanding not to get into others' issues. All countries have to take assistance from stronger ones BUT develop oneself also using that assistance.

Pakistan has all the potential and doesn't need to totally depend on assistance but to use the assistance and make a strong foundation on it.
