U.S. to give Pakistan 12 Shadow Drones

If it was so easy everyone would be building it, Takes time,R&D and $$$ man

The Pakistani defence industry has a decently developed UAV industry. Many of these local UAV industries have already shown their desire and capability to be able to produce UCAVs if/when they get the support of the GoP/PA etc. Time isn't the issue. It's a matter of priorities and willingness.

Here is another Food for Thought!

Robert Gates made this statement in order to divert attention from his earlier statement in India in which he said that India may attack Pakistan due to its limited patience against another Mumbai-type attack. This has caused furore in Pakistan and hence the Americans threw in the 'bait' of giving us the so called drone tech so that we and the media world over starts to chew on this instead!

Like I have said before, US policy is to talk like the Roman's when in Rome!!

US to give Pakistan unarmed drones' technology: Gates

ISLAMABAD: In a major shift in policy, the US said Thursday it would provide drone technology to Pakistan but only for unarmed aircraft - to partly meet a demand this country has been making for over a year.

"Pakistan's demand for provision of drone technology has been accepted by the US and we are working together with Pakistan Army in this connection," visiting US Defence Secretary Ribert Gates told a private TV channel here.

"We are considering the provision of planes for intelligence surveillance and unmanned planes to Pakistan. Discussions are under way with the Pakistan military leadership on technical matters in this regard," he added.

Ever since the drone attacks in the restive North and South Waziristan agencies along the border with Afghanistan began in August 2008, targeting the Taliban, Pakistan has been repeatedly demanding that these either stop or Islamabad be given the technology to build and operate the missile firing machines.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have on more than one occasion made the demand but until now the US has been steadfast in its refusal.

On Thursday too, Pakistani Defence Minister Mukhtar Ahmed made the demand during a meeting with Gates, who arrived here Thursday.

This year alone has seen eight missile strikes by US spy planes. More than 700 people have died in close to 80 drone strikes in Pakistan since August 2008.

Mukhtar handed over Pakistan's military wish list to the US, demanding the latest weapons and helicopters to enable effective action against terrorists in the country's tribal areas.

Matters related to Pakistan-US defence relations, the war against terror, regional security, the situation arising out of US drone attacks, the strategic partnership and other matters of mutual interest were discussed during the meeting.

Speaking to Online news agency after the meeting, Mukhtar described it as "very constructive" and said he had told Gates to stop the discriminatory attitude towards Pakistan acquiring civil nuclear technology and that Pakistan should be treated as a strategic partner.

Mukhtar said he had apprised Gates of the negative impacts of the drone attacks in the North and South Waziristan agencies and demanded their immediate end.

According to sources, Gates said that Pakistan was taking serious steps in the war against terror and the US would fulfill Pakistan's defence needs for this effort.

He said Obama Administration is seriously considering Pakistan's demands and the matter of a strategic partnership would be reviewed.

Gates arrived here from New Delhi where he said Wednesday said that the terrorists operating in ****** region could provoke a war on the sub-continent.

So its going to be unarmed? like the Falco?

Don't we have that already?

InshaAllah, Pakistan will launch its own drone--and armed one--soon based on our experience, the ToT we got from Falco and some assistance if needed from China and/or Turkey.

US can keep its "unarmed" drones to itself.

Well if any one of you saw he interview ?
The journalist and Mr robert were talking about ARMED PREDATOR DRONES and the RATE OF SUCSESS in AFGHANISTAN and IRAQ....and then he said that USA is thinking of providing ARMED DRONES TO PAKISTAN AND WILL share the ARMED TECHNO with PAKISTAN
Another thing we already use high tech drones so we dont need them plus we had been asking for ARMED PREDATOR from USA since long so please get it straight .
HE(ROBERT GATES) was talking about ARMED PREDATORS not UAVs for servaillence.THANKS

Of course, unless the Pakistanis decided to build a UCAV of their own which wouldn't be too far fetched.

I agree.. Not too far fetched at all. Requires much less effort than developing a fighter plane..China already has one in last stages I think..

Another carrot from uncle sam...but question is with this carrot what or who they gonna target....Is it Zardari's A$$ ..nay....it would defintily be common people's A$$.

They have trapped us in this so called war on terror and destroyed the once emerging economy...and feeding our enemies with loads of trade agreements and investments. Come on Pakistanies wake up before its too late.

Our enemy is becoming more n more stronger economically as well as militarily...and we are stcked in so called war on terror...what a joke with the nation and the people of Pakistan.

lets do it in pakistan don't ask fron uncle sam they will give us garbage only.:pakistan:
