What makes you think the pakistani state would not nuke the taliban if it came down pakistan being taken over?

I could be wrong but I think that entire purpose of Taliban is NWFP, not whole of Pakistan. If Pashtuns of NWFP do support them then indeed they might keep their influence on the Northern part of Pakistan, but they can never reach to other parts of Pakistan. For sure.

sounds like you don't like dissenting views. If you think I am wrong on an issue. then say so and back up what you say with hard provable facts. What I see with some of the people that post here (and no I didn't say all). are conspiracy theories that have been largely debunked. Or people posting information from blogs and slanted news sources. That have no basis in fact. People see U.S., Jewish, and Indian plots under every rock. And if anyone questions these he is ridiculed as delusional. This website is not a forum to post only those things that certain people agree with. It is a forum to post dissenting views as well. Hopefully people are mature enough to respond to posts they do disagree with in a respectful manner. As far as I know I have done that. The question to ask yourself is have you?

As my post stated I do not believe that Pakistan will fall to the Taliban. But just becuase I believe that doesn't mean it won't happen. I believe it is prudent for the U.S. based on past experience. (And I used the shah as an example) To plan for the possibility it could happen.

Prudent leadership, and that include the military, certainly will include possibilities, not only probabilities, so yes...when there is fighting INSIDE your borders, when unknown elements INSIDE your military and intelligence services, when undetermined numbers of the population support factions other than the government, it would be wise and prudent to include those 'coulds' into the equations.

If I may point out, it was infact under pressure from international community that the PA and GoP acted finally when "peace deal", keeping in line with "aspirations of the local people" as many of our fellow posters from Pakistan had at the time pointed out, simply handed over auite a large area to the Talibs.
