U.S. considering major arms sales to Egypt, Pakistan

The United States said on Wednesday it was considering a $57 million sale of air-to-surface missiles to Egypt, the second big arms deal this week after Congress was notified of a potential $1 billion sale of helicopters and missiles to Pakistan.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said the State Department had notified Congress on Tuesday of the possible sale to Egypt of 356 R-variant Hellfire II missiles and associated equipment, parts and training. The agency said the deal was worth up to $57 million.

The Hellfire is a family of 100-pound, laser-guided missiles generally fired by helicopters or airplanes, including unmanned drones.

The agency said it would be the first transfer of R-variant Hellfires to Egypt, which previously bought other types. The R-variant also can be fired from sea and ground platforms.

DSCA said Congress was notified of the potential sale on Tuesday. Notification is required by law and does not mean that the sale has actually been concluded.

On Monday, the DSCA said the State Department had approved a potential $952 million sale to Pakistan of 15 Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, 32 General Electric helicopter engines and 1,000 Hellfire missiles.

The potential deal with Pakistan also could include target sight systems, mission computers, global positioning navigation systems, radar warning receivers and other gear.

DSCA said the sale would further provide Pakistan “with military capabilities in support of its counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.”

US has also agreed to release the remaining Egyptian F-16 it had stopped after the army took over the power.

I don't know for sure but there are reports that Pakistan will get 14 or 16 F-16 BLOCK 52 from USA

F-16 is 3rd in line of modern jets. PAF is using it since middle of the 80's.
other jets are more expensive and PAF can't handle them with current budget

I think new we would try to get more old ones from European countries

Congress approved sales of 36 F-16 blk 52 back during Musharraf's era but we only purchased 18 so option for another 18 is always open. As far as used F-16s are concerned PAF wants to sweep as many as possible but no news about US giving us its used F-16. But yes for used, European countries like Netherlands, Denmark etc who are partners in F-35 program would be looking to sell their F-16 once they get F-35, so their is a chance we might get them.

Was introduced in 70s but due to constant upgrades it is still one of the most feared jet in the world and front line fighter for 26 nations. Its the front line fighter of PAF so that's the reason for its popularity though its popularity has decreased since the introduction of JF-17 but still quite popular.

there are usually 12 to 20 aircraft in a squadron but it usually depends on the aircraft's type

We may probably go for 54 Block 52 and rest will be MLUed ones from other sources under use and may be if we opt for 72 Block 52 then we may be banking on 120 of these birds in our arsenal.

No idea but think there was no time frame. But can not say that for sure.

Well that depends upon the type of aircraft and the service (Navy or Air Force). It can vary from 12-24. If you are taking about F-16 or Rafale they are fighters and a fighter squadron has 18-24 aircrafts where as transport squadron has 12 or so.
European countries don't have blk 52 but their F-16 are MLUed which makes them almost equal.
