A U.S.-backed military operation that freed 70 hostages who had been held by Islamic State in Iraq produced a cache of intelligence, and U.S. forces supporting Iraqi troops are likely to undertake more raids in the future, U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said on Friday.

Carter said he decided on the rescue mission after intelligence showed that executions were imminent and mass graves had been dug.

"When we find opportunities to do things that will effectively prosecute the campaign we're going to do that ... raids is one of those categories and I suspect that we'll have further opportunities in the future and we're going to avail ourselves of them," Carter said.

The U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State will also intensify its assault on the group's oil production and sales enterprise, Carter said, pointing as an example to a recent strike against a pump station and site for crude oil production in eastern Syria.

Overseeing those efforts will be Lieutenant General Sean MacFarland, who Carter placed in charge of counter-Islamic State activities in Iraq and Syria. Three general had previously shared responsibility.

MacFarland pioneered the use of a Sunni force called Sahwa (Awakening) that worked with U.S. troops to defeat al Qaeda in Iraq six years ago, Carter said.

"His efforts will be critical in the coming months as we continue to provide support for capable partners fighting on the front lines," Carter said.

The whole Iraqi invasion by U.S was based on a hoax and ironically many American officials have admitted that Bush lied, so I think you better study more, read some books, instead of reading Reuters/CNN... 24/7, otherwise, it will lead to more embarrassment.

The politics in Middle East are very complex , Saddam Hussain was removed from power but the Baathists are still operating from Syria which resulted in the cross border raids by United States.

United States supports Iraqi Central Government which even Turkey, Saudi Arabia , GCC, Iran Supports. Even the role of Iranians are clearly visible in the invasion of Iraq.

I have been to Iraq during the war, and I know people, mostly Iraqi, who went back to Iraq after the war ended in 2011.

I will not discuss whether or not the war itself is justified, that quite depend on peoples, you may think it's all about Oil, or money, fair enough, but then I do see differently.

The question of whether or not Iraq is worse off after the coalition invasion, well, it's just wrong. People who have been to Iraq before 2003 would have knew what kind of people Saddam Hussein are, to say removing him is worse off then leaving him in place would basically piss off the Iraqi Majority, basically the Shia Muslim in Iraq will go up and punch you in the face if you think Saddam is better off stay in power.

The problem is, before we rolled in to Iraq in 2003, there are civil war (Sunni-Shia sectarian war), persecution of Kurds, persecution of minority, no civil liberty, no public education (Which is strange as Saddam were awarded UN Education award during 1980s as Iraqi Education minister)

There were better time in Iraq after the war, but if you ask people who had been there and ask any Iraqi in this manner, certainly not between 1988 to 2003. Well, although Civil War still rampant, at least Iraqi are free to run their business, attend school and the persecution to particular have stopped, and giving time, the Civil War with ISIS is going to end too.

Iraq was brought down by the dark period after Iraq-Iran war, after that Saddam Hussein led everything into shit.......And to expect Iraq to climb back to the old glory pre-Saddam era immediately after the US is gone is absurd. It take a lot more than that to have it back on track, and it would have been just wrong to assume the US drag Iraq into hellhole, they WERE in the hellhole before the US, and the US simply stop them sink further, so they can slowly pull themselves out.

People always blame America for getting rid of the likes of Saddam but one day they will have to go, quite simply. And this "mess" they are in now would be the same, historically the middle east has never exactly had peaceful moments of democracy, its always kill or be killed and you can see it in the mentality of the vocal minority who do all the damage.

US started this shit of course but it was an inevitability, you think one day all the sunnis and shias are just going to shake hands and start dancing in the streets and have a fair election, no, one day Saddam would have died or been forced out, his sons would have tried to gain power or some other group and it would continue a cycle of ironfist dictatorships until one day large armed groups revolted.

Anywhere in history where there has been a dictatorship it HAS to end and it always ends badly, purely because dictatorships splinter huge amounts of the people into living together and when they end it all explodes, it just so happens when its in the middle east they are naturally fragmented into a million pieces and you cant fit them altogether easily.

Dictatorships either end quickly due to huge wars and massive loss of life i.e Napoleon, Hitler or it leads to a long mess with no unification i.e most of them going back to Roman times where a dictatorship would end and huge wars would break out between rival groups, IT ISNT NEW, IT ISNT THE COLD WAR, its human nature.

I read that a prison was bombed and flattened, and everyone in it was killed. Another act of mass murder by our beloved US, Assad, Israel, KSA, Iran, NATO, Russian 'armies' that fight to defeat 'terrorists'.

Also that the 'hostages' were IS defectors, hence they want intelligence from them probably. And they had no problem murdering hundreds in the process. The so called 'terrorists' seem to thousands times fold more humane then these so called armies leading 'war on terror'.
