Hi folks

I am creating this thread to educate my self about Type 85 tank of Pakistan.
All I know about them is that they were inducted in large numbers (300 atleast) during Indian brasstacks exercise. They were meant to counter Indian T72s. They were upgraded, got night vision. what else they got no information available any where. Even their pics are not available. All you find old, low pixel pics from 80s, no recent HD pictures are available............. what are the specifications of this tank? how good they are? what is their current status? plz educate us.......................

Well that is a valid question they were also not shown during parade and as matter of fact I haven't seen any new picture for really long time. @kaonalpha So what is their current status Guys ?

85 III is the newest of the 85式↓

type69 is the mimic of the t62，
79式，80式 both dont have a code name。
then，Chinese tank is going for two part，
one is 88式→88 c→96式→96A(the most MBT in CN)
another is 85式→85II→85III(→.....)
And the Type99 have an code name“wz123”
the technology in 99式 had used in 96式。
88c is from 85II,and 96式(not with A) is almost same with 88c.
So, now clearly,
85II→85III→(with. technology. in Pakistan)→85III in Pakistan
85II→88c→96→(with technology in 99)→96A
and AL Khalid↓
88III →90→90II→mbt2000→(with technology inPakistan)→AL Khalid

The Type-85 III had no future because the gulf war showed Chinese that the armor on their tanks (t-59/69/79/88) is vulnerable to western tanks.
The T-85 advantage was bigger gun, 125mm which also was incorporated later when Pakistan asked for a gun to match Indian T-72, the original gun was 105mm. The engine was slightly bigger than T-59 and T-69, although in Type-85 III, the engine was further improved with other improvements like NV,fire control system, better armor etc.

This was once going to be the main choice of tanks for PA but the PLA wanted a better tank, a new generation tank, which went onto become Type-99. When the chinese shifted focus on the new tank, PA also collaborated for a newer tank therefore Type-85 III was not pursued any more although HIT has tech in place to make components, overhaul and rebuilt this tank.

Then Type-90/96 was born through Type-88, both are second gen and type-90/96 was upgraded into AK. the chinese kept making Type-85 as stop gap till type-90/96 became available. PA infact went a way forward as stop gap and acquired T-80 UD from Ukraine when the Type-85 III program stopped.

Type-85 III is not front line because it was mainly acquired for desert use, which is now the domain of T-80 UD and AK, so the purpose of Type-85 has practically died. AZ, AK and T-80 UD all use 125mm gun which can defeat T-72.
Type-85 is not in huge numbers to be invested for modernization like Type-59 which is being upgraded into AZ

Well clearly Tank have gone through massive changes and fully upgraded now. @Dazzler and @DESERT FIGHTER Can you guys telling by looking at these pictures what changes have been made in these Tanks

A selam T-85IIM is at the same level as the AL-Zarrar Tank, it falls also under the Al-Zarrar upgrade programm for example such things as electronics ( night Vision). And of course it can be further upgraded with ERA Blocks, a good Tank to defence and hold a area.

its very good and reliable, can make life difficult for adversary.

type-59/69 already/ being upgraded to Alzarrar standard, type-85IIAP received in new ammo, FCS, optics, armour. What more do you want?

Is HIT always lacking to produce enough ERA for the Tanks ? The same way, alkhalid, it has only ERA Blocks on the Front side of the turret, comepared to Indian T-90 and upgraded T-72 Tanks, they have better protection.

day/ night fighting capable, can fire atgm, decent armor+ era, autoloader, nbc protection, modern fcs, 730 or 1000 hp engine with semiauto transmission. has been updated twice since induction. also has thermal imager.


era has small shell life, usually not mounted during peace time.

its very good and reliable, can make life difficult for adversary.
