Rare footage from 2002 standoff. the t-85IIAP along with the t-80ud were the stalwart of armor corps. it was deployed in tamewali bahawalpur region and was to confront it's nemesis, the t-72 m (monkey model).

Now the whole Indian T-72 Fleet has to get ERA and the upgrade to T-90S Level, so the threat is now REAL ! I have never seen any of our T-85IIMP was equipped/upgraded with ERA, even not this Video which you have post-war time escalation but any ERA bricks!

No they don't. for multiple reasons.

They didn't need ERA as the enemy had no apfsds that could entirely penetrate their frontal armor. The case is pretty much the same today.

But Alkhalid and Al-Zarrar does have it ALL TIME, I think all Tank crews deserve the same protection! Anyway, I trust our Army. Thx keep on!

Alkhalid is mostly seen with additional RHA plates not era. AZ is rarely seen with era these days.

What is the reason behind it?

Most of AK are with out ERA on Hull and carry no side armor.

About 950 T72 in Indian arsenal got ERA with Ajeya Mk3 (Battle improved) upgrade.
Rest are out dated T72M.

ERA has small shelf life so no point in using during peace time. Also, the RHA plates 200+mm of frontal armour plus the airgap between the actual modular composite module, that's more than enough armour to penetrate for obsolete ammo in service with the enemy.

Regarding the t-72 ajeya/ project rhino, the upgradation still continues and has turned out to be a total mess. The polish didn't allow license manufacturing of DRAWA-T fire control system so they'll be coming sealed from Poland. Without access to the FCS, the ajeya cannot use some of the ammo in service with their army.

The ERA module you guys seem to be worried about is way obsolete. It's a copy or vintage kontakt-1 and doesn't provide enough protection against modern rounds. The ajeyas are also vulnerable as they have the same powerplant so same manuverability, no ECS, no BMS, no improved main gun, and no ammo.

Now that's how the story goes. They need as many t-90Ms as they can get their hands on.

As for An side amour, they do have some HHS plates covered with slat armour/ external bin.

Hull frontal armour is also around 600-700mm which is more than enough.

They have been fitting new thermal imager fire control systems since 2014, 1000+ would've been fitted by now.

New ERA is being fitted as well. New engine as well.

So, the T-90S upgrade path is similar to that followed for modifying T-72M1s to the CIA standard which includes indigenous ERA, navigation aids, an uprated 1000 HP power pack, fire suppression system, new displays and sights. Almost a 1000 CIA's have been delivered to the IA, which now probably feels that the time is ripe for upgrading older T-90S lots besides building new ones with the improved features, since production seems to have finally stabilized at around 90-100 units a year.

  • New 1000-horsepower engines (identical to the T-90 tank) to replace the T-72’s old 780-horsepower engines. The cost of each engine: Rs 3 crore.
  • Thermal Imaging Fire Control Systems (TIFCS) that will allow the T-72 gunners to observe and fight at night. Each TIFCS will cost Rs 1.4 crore.
  • Thermal Imaging (TI) sights to provide T-72 tank commanders with night vision. Each TI sight costs Rs 0.4 crore.
  • An auxillary power unit (APU) to generate power for the tank’s electrical systems. Each APU will cost Rs 0.16 crore.

participated in Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), Tactical Access Switch (TAS), Combat Net Radio CNR 900 M (AFV), Software Defined Radio (SDR), Thermal Imager Based Fire Control System (TIFCS) for 1000 No’s T-72 tanks

Regardless, T72 will start to be phased out by 2020, with private and public sector companies competing for it's replacement starting 2020, FRCV.

With the industrialist inducted into the defence sector, India's armor solutions should be interesting.
