What's new

Two ex PLAN navy frigate joining in 2018 to Bangladesh Navy.

In 1971, China was in the chaos of Cultural Revolution, which made him too weak to launch any military action against anyone.
Except for engagement in the war directly, China had done anything his could to help Pakistan.

That depends on who you fight against.
If your enemy is india, i think any type of assistance from China is on the table.
Again 1971 comes up and I think it's unlikely.

. .
The war in 1971 could have been a perfect opportunity for China to beat India down and take back south tibet ,had China been in normal shape.
hadn't china taken part of kashmir in 1962 indo china war that is still a part of china atm?

China destroyed indian army in 1962, but retreated later followed by giving back all those indian prisoners and even their weapons.
Actually, China was experiencing a severe famine and great leap movement in 1962, which led to hard logistic situation for the PLA in Tibet.
Another reason for China to give up the fruit was indian succeeding in begging for the help from two superpowers US and Soviet Union.
I had to say the foreign policy of China in the period was not sensible. Only if one superpower sided with us, things would be different. India would have been beaten shit of *** totally.

One word, PLA could defeat indian army but could not sustain long term existence during that period.

As far as everyone's concerned... people see china as the victor of that war.

Victory militarily, but didn't take back the territory. Now decades later, shameless Indian built posts again to bite other's land bit by bit.
Now India is used by US as a lapdog to contain China.
China would do his best to catch up with US right now ,cause there is a new technical revolution ongoing which is critical for the future.
When this tech revolution is finished , it is time for China to show hands with Indian.

Bangladesh Navy can have access to almost any port in the Indian Ocean.... and if Indonesian Navy visits Chittagong Port, Bangladesh may not object.... and it may be the same for warships from other countries in the Indian Ocean rim.... this is just one perspective I give regarding the power projection options available to Bangladesh....

Bangladesh is building coal-fired power plants.... Indonesian coal is not going to be available for long.... so, it may be coal from Africa that will become important for Bangladesh.... Bangladesh is also building up fleets of vessels for carrying coal.... now, when Bangladesh would be dependent on African coal to keep away darkness, keeping that lifeline secure would be more than just another option.... similar things can be said about oil from the Middle East or other commodities like cement clinker, wheat, sugar, edible oil, copper, iron, aluminium, lead, zinc, etc. etc...... keeping the sea lanes open is a matter of survival, not luxury, no option....

we simply can't depend on others to keep us alive.... this is not an option....

Are you even reading what has been said so far in the thread?

No-one is saying that BD should not build a Navy to challenge IN in the Bay of Bengal. The issue is that
BD cannot afford to extend this into the wider IOR as India simply has far greater financial resources than BD
and India can afford carriers, SSNs etc that BD cannot do when looking up to 2030 at least.

China will simply not allow India to even dare to attempt to interfere with shipping from BD as this will be against the national interests of China. Pay no attention to Indian wet dreams of turning IOR into an Indian lake as it will forever remain a dream of theirs.

PLAN and USN will jointly rule IOR going forward from 2030 and if either decides to blockade BD shipping then there is nothing that BD can do about it.

Maybe there is merit in BD exploring the floated idea of aquiring a fleet of SSNs from China but the way that the BD economy looks right now, even if China was inclined to sell, BD may not be able to afford them.

We need to look at the wider geopolitical picture here.

SSN is kind of assassin, even one could present a substantial threat to even a CBG. That is why Russia focuses on advances SSBN and SSN instead of developing a full spectrum navy .
To a relatively inferior navy, submarines is much more efficient in determining the strong rivalry. A SSN with high speed and unlimited endurance plays a perfect role in making nightmare.

BD economy
Chinese national (economic) interests is increasingly vested in BD economy, for example this agreement just inked:

Chinese govt to set up SEZ in Chittagong
15th June, 2017 09:25:26

The Chinese government will set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on 783 acres of land in Chittagong's Anwara upazila under a government to government (G to G) deal. Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) executive chairman Paban Chowdhury and China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC) CFO Shengquan Xiong signed a shareholder agreement for setting up the SEZ-Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone- which is expected to attract US42.0 billion in investment.

Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office, and Prime Minister's principal secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury were present at the agreement signing ceremony held at the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday. "It is for the first time that a foreign company is going to set up a SEZ in Bangladesh on G to G basis. The main work on project will begin in December this year," Paban Chowdhury told BSS. "We hope that this zone will create jobs for two lakh people," he added. The BEZA executive chairman said China will set up medicine, apparel, agro procession, chemical, medical equipment, plastic and IT industries in the zone. Two connecting roads have already been constructed for the proposed SEZ, he added.

This multi-billion big ticket news is also covered by Xinhua, perhaps I will start a thread. BD national security is fast becoming common interests of both nations.

Bhai, I think too much dependence on others is not good for any nation. China is our best friend but they also have their own limitations. There's still no full-fledged Chinese naval base in the IOR. So in case of a conflict, China would have to send its vessels from South China sea, navigating the crucial Malacca strait. We can't wait for the Chinese to come to our rescue. In 1971, similar thing happened with Pakistan. The US dispatched the 7th Fleet to Pakistan's rescue but by the time they reached Bay of Bengal, Pakistan had already been forced to surrender.

It's always best to develop own capabilities rather than depending on others. It's rather the long term thinking that we should look at.

Well BD cannot hope to put up a good fight against India till 2030 anyway. China will by then have a CBG permanently in the IOR region by then.

Anyway a war does not start out of nowhere, there is a buildup that could take weeks and months. Plenty of time to deploy enough naval assets into the IOR region in time to put paid to any Indian wet dreams of interfering with BD shipping.

Only way that I can see BD itself dealing with the IN is by procuring a force of say 6 SSNs from China. If China was inclined to sell, one of these SSNs will come to at least 1 US billion dollars, can BD afford it?

6 SSN would be a big threat to US let alone Indian navy.
IMO, 2 or 3 SSNs plus 6 AIP conventional subs would be enough to make Indian sleepless and sustain a substantial deter to Indian navy and his trade seaway.

sorry brother....
your compromise over conceding the sea lanes outside the Bay of Bengal to other countries is not really my cup of tea.... leaving others to control the sea, our navy would be a bunch of expensive toys in the Bay of Bengal.... if our navy can't do the job it is supposed to do, then why do we need to spend this much behind them??..... a naval blockade is NOT ACCEPTABLE..... because that can make us kneel in front of others....

we did not become independent to kneel in front of others and just brag about freedom.... did we??
