Twenty Three Pakistani Universities Rank Among Asia's Top 500

As simple Google search tells us there are 167 universities in pakistan and Bangladesh only has 40 ..

Google search also tell us this is 2014-15 figure, and are registered with HEC are mentioned. The actual figure now is in excess of 200, some are unregistered as it need the proceedings and the formality.

163 universities Pakistan in FY2014-2015, 94 public, 69 private, total number of campuses(in addition to main campus/principal office) is 82

It's pretty sad internationally to see Pakistan nowhere on the scientific fora.

Literally absent.

I know they have some good British era and Parsi and Missionary schools.

Some good colleges and universities too.

But I don't know what it is.

Either their cream all goes abroad. Or what's left within is not very good.

Or both.

The gulf is just too stark.

I see more Bangladeshis off late. Even some pockets in Nepal.

Pakistan ... ZERO.

There used to be some brief appearances from their Karachi university and medical school. Now even that's died out.

They are falling back dangerously in higher education (both quality and coverage) and they have near zero industry.

It's very difficult for a nation to come out of that double whammy.

My two cents from my professional field ....

Cheers, Doc

No one cares what you think or observe..

I work in government healthcare. Once we had a meeting with a CMO of one of the government hospitals, he showed us the list of Pakistani doctors to be interviewed along with Indians and others.. He told us all the Pakistanis on that list rejected the offer that time.. and most of the Indians accepted the offer.. Unfortunately, there were very few Bangladeshis shortlisted for interview.

Now since it is my personal information, I don't want you or any other person to put reliance on it..

Brof Riazul Haq sb,

Pak has 23 Univs, India which has 7X Pak's population should have 161. But it has only 75. Means Pak has beaten India hollow in this. Congratulations to all Pakistanis here.

Regards

can some day indians commit a suicide out of shame, like suicide on national level? Or is that too much to ask?

Area, population, diversity, resources, history, culture and you have to compare yourself with Pakistan? You could have done better. What did india contribute to the world in it's recent history except for NRIs and laborers?

I guess it depends on what you are into and the level at which you are. Without sounding elitist of course ...

I see your second flag.

No offence, but I operate in different geographies, areas, and capacities.

Yup. Better we leave it here :)

Cheers, Doc

Lol.. it's better for us to not share personal experiences.. otherwise I have so much to share.

Regarding my level, I don't want to brag about it as well.. :-)

Sorry mate I don't agree and I'm against this dick measuring contest. The fact is we, Pakistan, is far behind the west in science and technology so we have a lot to do. We need major improvements all around from basic education to higher education. It is a long way to go.. BTW I don't pay too much stress on ranking because these are not true representatives of the quality.

1) A forum is all about debate and personal perspectives. Otherwise one could simply read news feeds and use Google.

2) I'm happy (and a bit relieved to be honest) that you don't want to brag. Coz' really, I used to work at and with CMOs and hospitals in my mid 30s. Early to late-early career level. Its been a long journey since then ....

I'm glad you are happy doing what you are doing, where you are doing it, and that's all that's really important.

Cheers, Doc

Well, all thanks to PPP tenure. Musharaf improved Higher education in Pakistan about (100 times. That i can say for sure). They actually reduced our higher education budget every year from that of in Musharaf era.

But we have to also consider this that university rankings depends on many things that include p.hd faculty, research papers and other publications etc. In pakistan, an average university have about 4000-5500 students and 400-450 faculty. Thats not enough when universities in west have roughly 35000-40000 students and 2000-2500 faculty. Its simple math. Only if 10% students end their degree with a publication. The number will be 3000-3500 for a western university (in 4 years) while it will be 400-550 for a pakistani university (4 years).

NUST is on the top because it currently have 17-18 colleges and roughly 18000 students. Same with the Comsats, 4-5 campuses each having 4000-5000 students (roughly 23000 combined). Big universities (in the context of huge number of students) can afford large number of P.hd’s. So you see, small number of students effecting our universities on 2 fronts.
1. Less publications by students.
2. Less resources to hire more P.hd’s.

And both these points are major contributors to any institutes ranking.
