The problem with Turkey's military intervention in Syria is that it's neither here nor there. The Turks should either stay out of the Syrian (and Iraqi) mess completely or become more assertive. Sometimes, taking the middle ground just won't cut it.

The FSA is an incompetent fighting force. It's weaker than all other militant factions in Syria by the way. It's probably only a little bit better than the farcical pro-government NDF.

Another problem is that a lot of the Syrians fighting alongside Turkey in the Azaz-Jarabulus corridor are, in fact, double agents who secretly support (or belong to) ISIS. These fighters can betray the Turks at any given moment. This also means that the Turkish forces in northern Syria must increasingly rely on their Syrian Turkmen brethren for loyalty and local support.

I think Turkey needs to cut some of its losses in Syria. The Turks need to concede that some elements within the FSA are both untrustworthy and incompetent. Turkey should, instead, focus most of its attention on Syrian Turkmen autonomy in northern Syria and on Arab and Kurdish groups that are neither radical Islamic (i.e. ISIS-leaning) nor anti-Turkish (i.e. YPG-leaning).

This requires a very delicate and careful balancing act, which Turkey cannot do entirely on its own. It needs the support of the Iraqi and Rojava Peshmerga units, as well as the support of genuinely moderate groups that feel disenfranchised right now and are in desperate need of foreign support.

Turkey shouldn't rely on Islamist FSA fighters. Most of them are both incompetent and treacherous. They can stab Turkey in the back at any minute.

You have to understand the military doctrine of ISIS. ISIS doesn't mind losing land/territory. The ISIS leadership has made it perfectly clear that it doesn't mind "going underground" and reemerging many weeks or months down the road in order to reestablish territorial control over Syria and Iraq.

Is Turkey willing to establish a permanent military presence in northern Syria? I ask because this is probably the only way Turkey can prevent the reemergence of ISIS. This is, of course, a very costly task, so it's probably better for Turkey to empower Syrian Turkmen groups, grant them their own autonomous region in northern Syria, and also work with Kurdish factions that are friendly with Ankara and that do not identify with the PKK, such as Rojava Peshmerga.

This is Turkey's best and safest way out of Syria. The last thing the Turks need is getting bogged down in a failed Arab state. Trust me, you'll regret it many years later. It'll not only exhaust the Turkish military, but it will also undermine Turkey's economy and social fabric.

What I said wasn't wrong, you dipshit. Turks have never defeated Iranians in any war. Arabs did, but only because the Sassanids were too exhausted after fighting the byzantines for centuries.

Name me one war in which the Turks defeated any Iranian or Persian army.
