Naval Announces 3D SMART-S Mk-2 Radar
March 9, 2017

Naval Forces Command stated that in the news of 8 March in the Internet news sites, the news about 3D SMART-S Mk-2 radar in corvettes produced under the MİLGEM Project does not work with full performance and targets can not be seen. Published the statement.

The press release reads as follows:

"SMART-S three-dimensional weather radar; France, Canada, Denmark and South Korea, among the 10 countries of the Navy. It has been used since 2011 in a total of 10 ships, including our ADA class corvettes, which are currently built as frigates and national ships in the Turkish Naval Forces.

The SMART-S radar has been provided in coordination with the procurement authorities of the Naval Forces Command for the selection of the other candidate radars for our platforms, as well as the detailed examination and the thorough examination of the tests carried out in consideration of the many criteria in the inspection and acceptance stages.

The Turkish Navy's SMART-S vessels perform successful missions in the world's seas, especially in the surrounding seas of Turkey. SMART-S radar; From 2012 onwards, it has proved its success by detecting and following the targets with high performance in ball and guided bullet shots made intentionally to the complex drill scenarios where high speed drones are used in various geographies of the world including South Africa.

Therefore, SMART-S three-dimensional search radars have performed as expected on the Turkish Navy platforms in the day-to-day trainings and in real missions, and have been an important sensor in the air defense of vessels and task forces.

The unsubstantiated news that can not be understood which service is served on the ground is also damaging to our country's reputation in the MILGEM project which is realized with the highest technology in the light of scientific processes and constitutes an important turning point in terms of the design and construction of the Turkish Republic's own war ship.

In order to ensure that the public information is not misinformed in subsequent news of the Naval Forces Command, it would be appropriate to confirm the accuracy of the information from the competent military authorities. "

Smart-S Mk2 is a Thales NETHERLANDS product, made in Hengelo (NL). Thales Netherlands is former Signaal aka HSA (Hollandse Signaal Apparaten)

Understood.

SMART-S: Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Tracking, S band (Signaal as in Hollandse Signaal Apparaten)

SMART-S (o_O "smart ***" > Dutch humor, I suppose :rolleyes1:) mk2 is licence produced in Turkey by Aselsan. In cooperation with the radar's producer, Thales Nederland, Turkish defense electronics company Asalsan manufactures the radar under license for eight FFG-7 frigate upgrades and one new-build MILGEM. The STING EO Mk2 used is also a Thales Netherlands product. The cooperation between the two companies, also includes Sting EO Mk2 system and subsystems from Thales. The SCOUT Mk2 surface surveillance radar was an option (not sure if taken up).

Yavuz and Barbados classes (Meko 200T ships) uses Thales NL (HSA) DA08 2D search radar, STIR-2.4 and STIR-18.
Kılıç Class fast attack craft use Thales NL MW08 3D search radar, STING-EO fire control radar, and SCOUT/KH1007 navigation radar. Yildiz class fast attack craft uses Thales NL LIOD Mk.2 fire control radar and SCOUT/KH1007 navigation radar. Doğan and Rüzgar-classes FACs use Thales NL WM 28/41 fire control radar and LIOD Mk.2 fire control radar.

Thus, the Turkish navy at least is much reliant on Dutch made products and services...
