Turkish Missile Programs

Roketsan has successfully conducted test firings of HİSAR-A, the National Low Altitude Air Defence Missile, in Aksaray during 19th to 24th of June, 2015. The tests of the Controlled Test Missile-1 (KTF-1) with its own autopilot and the Ballistic Test Missile-2 (BTF-2) with a dual pulse solid propellant rocket motor which itself is a first in Turkey, were realised with the participation of the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC), Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) and Aselsan.

During the tests that have now been completed, the HİSAR-A missiles successfully separated from the launcher with the ignition of the first pulse rocket motor, then igniting the second pulse motor in flight to perform the programmed maneuvers under the control of the on-board autopilot. This is the first ever successful firing of a dual pulse motor missile in Turkey, which has led Roketsan to become a proud member of the limited number of companies with similar technological capabilities in the world. As a result of these firing tests, another milestone has been completed under the development of the first national air defence missile of Turkey.

The HİSAR Projects have been designed to give Turkey a national Air Defence Missile capability towards meeting the Low and Medium Altitude Air Defence requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces and also be able to compete in world markets. The development of the radar, command & control and fire control systems fall under the responsibility of Aselsan, while the design and development of the missile systems are the responsibility of Roketsan, the Missile Center of Excellence of Turkey.

Long altitude project is really complicated to decide which offer should be selected because There are politic, economic and ToT factors that is directly related with Turkish officials' desicions but The result is like following:

1- China FD-2000 (Best price for satisfactory ToT to develop our own Hisar-U, Avarage political stability with China for a message to our "allies")
2-EuroSam Aster-30 (French officials support for Armenian lies, high price for an avarage ToT)
3-Pac-3+ (High price, lowest ToT, no support Turkey's Syrian policies)

3-Pac-3+ (High price, lowest ToT, no support Turkey's Syrian policies)

Why was PAC-3 offered during the T-LORAMIDS tender? It's a counter missile systems with limited anti-aircraft duties.

The PAC-3 upgrade has effectively quintupled the "footprint" that a Patriot unit can defend against ballistic missiles of all types, and has considerably increased the system's lethality and effectiveness against ballistic missiles. It has also increased the scope of ballistic missiles that Patriot can engage, which now includes several intermediate range. However, despite its increases in ballistic missile defense capabilities, the PAC-3 missile is a less capable interceptor of atmospheric aircraft and air-to-surface missiles. It is slower, has a shorter range, and has a smaller explosive warhead compared to older Patriot missiles.

Are you sure it wasn't GEM+ (MIM-104D)? PAC-3 doesn't make sense for a SAM tender.

It was 12 batteries of PAC-3 that was offered for Loramids.

From what I'm seeing the US offer was a combination of PAC-3 and GEM-T:

On September 9, 2009 the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified the US Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Turkey of 13 PATRIOT Fire Units, 72 PATRIOT Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missiles, four PAC-3 Lot Validation Missiles, 197 MIM-104E PATRIOT Guidance Enhanced Missiles-T (GEM-T), four MIM-104E GEM-T Lot Validation Missiles, five PATRIOT Digital Missiles, five Anti-Tactical Missiles and other related support and equipment. The estimated cost was $7.8 billion.

In addition, the potential sale included eight AN/USQ-140(V)(2)(c) (RT-1785) or AN/USQ-140(V)(11)(c) Multifunctional Information Distribution Systems/Low Volume Terminals (MIDS/LVT-2), 13 AN/MPQ-65 Radar Sets, four Tactical Command Systems, 13 Battery Command Posts, six Communication Relay Groups, 13 Engagement Control Stations, 48 M902 Launching Stations, 52 Antenna Mast Groups, 13 Electronic Power Plant III (EPP), 100 THALES 9310C Very High Frequency (VHF) Voice Radios, 150 THALES 9310C VHF Data Radios, containers, battery and battalion maintenance equipment, prime movers, generators, electrical power units, personnel training and training equipment, trailers, communication equipment, tool and test sets, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, U.S. Government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support.

That would make more sense, I'd still go for a domestic or Eurosam option, but PAC-3 alone wouldn't even cover the basic necessities of the Loramids tender. GEM-T combined counter-air and counter-missile duties while augmenting the PAC-3's more adept ABM capabilities.

  • Ankara is considering buying four batteries of a theater air defense system to guard the country's strategic locations.

· With the proposed total fiscal year budget for 2008 fixed at YTL 222.31 billion ($185.26 billion), the Ministry of National Defense allocation comprises around 6 percent of the total budget and corresponds to 1.85 percent of the GNP.

Thx for clarification for Patriot system. I totally missed the Gem-T section of USA Patriot offers. It makes more sense now...

Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missile (GEM-T)
Guidance Enhanced Missile TBM (GEM-T) is the latest in-production series of the highly successful Raytheon Patriot missile variants available to both U.S. forces and international customers. GEM-T deliveries to the U.S. Army began in 2006. This capability adds a low-noise oscillator for improved acquisition and tracking performance in clutter. The GEM-T missile provides an upgraded capability to defeat tactical ballistic missile (TBM), aircraft and cruise missile threats in complement to the PAC-3 missile.
A modernized digital fuze design eliminates obsolescence and introduces significant performance improvements against TBM targets. This design also increases sensitivity for improved performance against high-speed TBM targets. The low noise front end (LNFE) of the GEM-T has increased seeker sensitivity, improving acquisition/track performance. The new low noise oscillator design has a modified down-link, which provides an increased signal to interference ratio, improving acquisition/ track performance against small ABT and cruise missile targets in clutter.
The GEM variants were combat proven in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2003, the U.S. and coalition Patriot units were deployed throughout the CENTCOM region to protect forces and populations from the threat of ballistic missiles. The improvements developed and fielded since 1991 reflect the enhanced capabilities of Patriot to protect against threats to both static assets and forces in the attack. The Configuration-3 ground equipment, PAC-3 and GEM-T series of missiles are all combat proven.

Successful Hits from UMTAS!


Roketsan has reached the final phase in the UMTAS Project, the new-generation Long Range Antitank Missile with an imaging infrared (IIR) seeker.

Multiple targets were successfully hit during firing tests, on the 2nd and 3rd of July, 2015, at the firing range in Karapınar/Konya, also witnessed by the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Roketsan. The UMTAS Project is in the design verification phase, where system qualification is expected to begin this year.
