Egypt accepts Turkey request to convene in NY: Spokesperson
Egypt and Turkey will meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Meeting amid strained relations
Ahram Online, Tuesday 23 Sep 2014
Egypt has accepted Turkey's request to convene a bilateral meeting in New York to discuss highly strained relations between both nations, according to an Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman.
Ambassador Badr Abdel-Ati said the meeting will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, which will be attended by Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and other Egyptian dignitaries.
"The meeting will be exploratory and all issues shall be discussed," he told Al-Hayat TV late Monday.
Bilateral ties between Egypt and Turkey have significantly worsened following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood had strong relations with Turkish authorities during his presidency.

Hopefully we see a turn around in relations
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said Turkey has requested a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly meetings, currently in session in New York.
“Turkey asked for a meeting with the Egyptian side on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session,” ministry spokesman Badr Abdel-Ati told a local television channel late Sept. 23.
Abdel-Ati said the offer had been accepted by Cairo.
“Egypt has agreed to the meeting because there is no animosity toward or problems with the Turkish people,” he added.
The meeting would bring together Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Çavuşoğlu, the spokesman said.
It will be the first direct talks since the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi, which has been repeatedly denounced by Ankara. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has several times accused Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of “hijacking the people’s will.”
Commentators have recently noted Ankara’s willing to thaw the severed ties between both countries.
The Egyptian spokesman said he expected talks to touch on bilateral relations and regional developments.
Last November, Egypt downgraded its diplomatic relations with Turkey to the level of chargé d’affaires and recalled its ambassador from Ankara. Turkey responded with similar measures.
