Turkish army in Korean war against China. Unknown to most, turks were the bravest among of UN army. We get to hear USA (who run away once their overwhelming fire power support runs out).

5000 Turkish troops including my uncle of the 1st Turkish Brigade fought against 100.000 Chinesee troops in battle of Wawon

120.000 Chinese troop started massive attack
and the US division left Kaesong and the next day, the Turkish Brigade was largely an infantry unit without trucks for troop transport

the Turks were the only UN unit between Wawon and Kunuri
Turkish Brigade's stubborn defence during the Battle of Wawon did allow the UN forces to withdraw and regroup with lower than expected casualties
and by delaying the enemy three days, the Turkish Brigade achieved its flank-cover mission and save American, S.Korean soldiers



Turkish soldiers were young and carried a sidearm sword that, to Americans and the other UN troops, appeared to be a long knife. No other U.N. troops were armed with that kind of knife, or indeed any other weapon out of the ordinary. The Turks had a dangerous proficiency in close combat with their long knives that made all other allied forces want to stay clear of them


The Chinese army reported that the Turks put up unexpectedly hard resistance at Wawon
there was apparently fierce hand to hand combat and forced the Chinese to reinforce their own larger force with an additional regiment


Turkish Soldiers always fought valiantly and usually never take a step back which that make them famous around other UN Soldiers

The Turks acquitted themselves in a brave and noble fashion in some of the worst conditions experienced in the Korean War

They are JOPER part of JOAK.

JOAK-Jandarma Ozel Asayis Komutanligi-Gendarmerie Special Public Safety Command. Inside of JOAK there are several JOPER- Jandarma Ozel Operasyon-Gendarmerie Special Operations teams, several JOH-Jandarma Ozel Harekat-Gendarmerie Special Operations (lower tier) teams and JAK-Jandarma Arama Kurtarma-Gendarmerie Search and Rescue teams.

JOPER is the most professional and modern equipped unit within the Gendarmerie. Intensive training is given to JOPER including parachute and diving training. JOPER teams are extremely experienced and effective force conducting operations with very high success rate which gives them the current reputation.

With the most recent changes JOPER upgraded significantly their inventory by adopting the new standard camouflage pattern of the Gendarmerie General Command, new uniforms and personal equipment, national firearms.

Yeah Uncle Sam has a history of running away with its tail between its legs. Like in Mogadishu it had to rely on Pakistani and Malaysian troops to rescue them.

UN forces had to mop up their messes.
