Turkey's EU membership hits a wall

Turkey is not a European country. Don't know why its deluding itself into joining the EU.

Turkey is a middle eastern country.

Its people are middle eastern. Its culture is middle eastern. Its cuisine is middle eastern. Its religion is middle eastern. Its language is middle eastern.

Besides certain areas of Istanbul, what is so European about Turkey?

If you explain to us what European is, instead of what not, maybe we can understand you more clearly.

The West will never accept Turkey into the EU because they see Turks as non white people even though many Turks look just like white with Blond hair and blue eyes.

Turkey should join the S.C.O instead.

Both of them (as a collective entity) are almost carbon copies of each other, adopt the same collective policies and strategies.

I'm pretty sure this comparison lacks any sensible thought.

Turkey's accession process to EU is just a game that both sides want to and have to play. So, we are deluding ourselves into something but you really need to learn more about Turks and Turkish history.

Turkey or the Ottoman Empire has always been this external threat on the fringes of Europe's borders.

They weren't classified as Europeans but as Orientals or Mohammedans, or the Barbarian Turks.

Turks repeatedly tried to conquer Europe and were repulsed in 1683 in Vienna.

So Turkey should focus its energy on being a major player in the Middle East and taking its rightful place as the leading power in the Sunni Islamic World instead of trying to join the EU. No one wants Turkey there.

The reason Europeans are against Turkey joining the EU is because first of all Europe's borders will stretch all the way to Iraq, Iran and Syria. 2nd, Turks will in the millions move to other EU nations changing the demographics and causing Islam to spread and lastly the power in EU is through population and right now Germany being the most populous EU nation has the most power but soon Turkey will surpass Germany and become the leading country in EU. That is something Europeans will never allow to happen and I don't blame them.

Turkeye is doing just fine without being in the EU. Robust economy, low inflation, industrially developed nation, population classified as upper middle class and a rich history - Turkeye is not lacking anything.

EU on the other hand does not exactly ooze confidence. Except for Germany, other countries are not doing that great with some negative outlook - Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Spain and worried outlook about France.

Any country located on the European continent is European. Turkey having a small sliver of land besides Greece does not mean that it makes all of Turkey a European country.

By that same analogy, France could have been seen as a Middle Eastern Country due it had Algeria but every single White French person was kicked out of Algeria because even though they lived in Algeria since 1830 they were still seen as outsiders.

So Turkey needs to realize that its not a European country but a Middle Eastern one. Don't know why Turkey thinks that is a downgrade.

Combination of factors. Pope is opposed. Majority Muslim (ofc). Anatolia has never been part of Europe. Ottoman prejudice. Many other factors.

Well, Turkey was eager to be included in the EU..Just 10 years ago, Turkey was struggling with huge economical, political problems..Now, the situation is changed..Here is a good article, its a bit long but i suggest you to read it if you have some time

Where did you get this downgrade thing from? Why you guys so eager to swear unreservedly? I know how it seems like when looking from outside but some search is needed before speaking. First of all majority of our citizens including me against EU, google public surveys about this, you think that we are dying for looking like european? We have a great history and are a proud nation.

It's all about politic issue, i support that Turkey keep driving the europeans in to the corner because of the hypocrisy of european politicians, once they promised to accept Turkey into union but they wimp out now, at the same time they know that they cant swallow their words back. What they are doing is impeding. If i am not your friend, dont invite me to your party, once you did, i will enjoy it
