Turkey may use Russian S-300 systems to build missile shield

Russia's S-400 Triumf is a new air defense missile system developed as an upgrade to the S-300 family.

It has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), or twice the range of the MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2.

The system is capable of destroying stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles with an effective range of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and a speed of up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.

NATO member Turkey has quietly decided to buy variants of three different S-300 missile systems from Belarus and Ukraine to test them at the Konya training center with the Electronic Warfare Training Field (EHTS) system built by local firm Havelsan.

"These missile systems are intended to be used for testing and training purposes to simulate threats that may come from countries with ex-Soviet systems in their inventories," a local defense industry source told Today's Zaman. The decision to buy former Soviet-designated SA-12 (300V version) and SA-10 (S-300) missile systems, as well as SA-15 short and medium-range TOR systems, at a cost of around $100 million, was made during an executive committee meeting of the Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) on July 22, but it was not made public. Sources close to the project said the systems will be tested mainly with F-16s using the EHTS system, which has been moved from Eskişehir to the central Anatolian town of Konya, some 250 kilometers from Ankara, where a regional combat readiness simulation center is located.

Tests with these missile systems will, amongst other things, help Turkey detect whether the Greek Cypriot administration, which has Russian S-300s in its inventory, has been using them.

NATO warns Turkey against buying Chinese, Russian air defense systems

NATO may avoid sharing ballistic missiles intelligence with Turkey if the nation decides to buy Chinese or Russian systems for its missile defense program

Ankara would have to operate without NATO’s intelligence information on incoming ballistic missiles if it chooses to buy Chinese or Russian systems for its national air and missile defense program, officials of the Western alliance have warned Turkey.

Participating in the ongoing competition to win Turkey’s national air and missile contract are the U.S. partnership between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, with their Patriot air defense systems; Russia’s Rosoboronexport, marketing the S300; China’s CPMIEC (China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corp.), offering its HQ-9; and the Italian-French Eurosam, maker of the SAMP/T Aster 30. Turkey is planning to make its selection late this year or early next year.

Many Western officials and experts say that since the Russian and the Chinese systems are not compatible with NATO systems, their potential eventual victory might provide them with access to classified NATO information, and as a result may compromise NATO’s procedures.

Turkey’s costly missile project draws close attention

Turkey has so far refused to rule out the potential procurement of the Russian S-300 or Chinese HQ-9 systems. Such an outcome would be a blow to both US and European industry while also raising issues for integration with the wider NATO missile defence plan.

Turkey is considering S-300 VM which is not an export version as PMU series:

The S-300VM "Antey-2500" (NATO reporting name SA-23 Gladiator\Giant) is a Russian anti-ballistic missile system. The system is designed to defeat short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, aeroballistic and cruise missiles, fixed wing aircraft, as well as loitering ECM platforms and precision-guided munitions.
The 9M82M missile is intended to defeat tactical, theater and medium range ballistic missiles, as well as aerodynamic targets at a range of up to 200km. The Antey-2500 system is mounted on a tracked cross-country vehicle equipped with self-contained power supply and navigation systems, as well as surveying and positioning equipment.

System Characteristics

The Antey-2500 air defense missile system features:
high degree of battle performance automation owing to high-speed digital computers;
phased array radars;
advanced radar data processing methods;
high ECM immunity;
high ability of autonomous operation;
high mobility;
high firepower potential, irrespective of air attack tactics or sequence;
vertical launch from a special transport launch canister;
maintenance-free operation of missiles for at least ten years;
capability to defeat ballistic missile individual warheads flying at speeds of up to 4,500 m/s;
inertial guidance with radio command update and semi-active homing at the terminal phase;
focused detonation of the missile warhead.
The Antey-2500 system comprises:
command post;
circular scan radar;
sector scan radar;
multichannel missile guidance station (MMGS)
9A83M launcher (24);
9A84M loader-launcher (24);
9M82M air defense missiles;
9M83M air defense missiles;
maintenance vehicles;
maintenance and repair vehicles;
group SPTA set;
electronic trainer for MMGS operators;
transporter vehicles;
set of missiles handling equipment.

Russian air-defense systems are far much cheaper than the western ones. Algeria bought 8 battalions of S-300 PMU2 for $1 billion .

Excellent decision by the Turkish Govt to buy Russian Air defence system for their country......I guess they shold get S-400 the latest kind to develop their own later......:smokin:

.
i think turkey may be developes its own system may be base on russian technology.

.
the key word is ''EHTS'' Electronic Warfare Training Field system built by local firm Havelsan''. it has nothing to do with T-LORAMIDS

''These missile systems are intended to be used for testing and training purposes to simulate threats that may come from countries with ex-Soviet systems in their inventories''

If I am not wrong we already had older model of s-300 ( its radar systems) and tor m1 again from Belarus in Konya

Turkey did not order Russian SAM to use against enemy. I mean There is an ongoing tender process to obtain a long range air defence system and S-300/400 mixture system is also competing with European and USA rivals in there but That is a seperate purchase. Above news is about Turkey's AirForce training center locating in Konya which is classified one of the best in NATO (You know It is the exercise area Turkey refused participation of Israel).

In Konya training center, There are lots of land based threats which is being controlled by Havelsan developed inteligence computer systems called EHTES and The SAM's are threating the real air assets with realistic sanal missile launchs and The Missile/laser warning system of the aircrafts are acting as If there is a real missile which was locked on you so Turkey ordered one S-300 system to integrate its real software/missile characteristics (to jamming/destroying) into this education center to develop the strategies to hunt long range air defence batteries, performing operations into an area which is protected by SAM's.

Attention to SAM's EHTES is containing...

SA-6/SA-8 GECKO/SA-15 TOR/S-300/SA-3/ZSU-23-4/ASPIDE-SPARROW/HAWK these are the system simulated in EHTES with their firecontrol/tacking radar. I could say TurAF developed many tactics, and EW tools to disrupt these system.

In short time Patriot radars will come also...

As far as I know I don't think Russia is selling their S400 to anyone for the time being. So it's going to be S300.

I think it's a wise decision to spread out your investment especially if you're going to learn from other technologies.

What? when

At present, Korean AirForce tactics, strength, trainings are in safe hands...
