President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday said Turkey was planning talks with the Taliban over the hardline Islamist group’s refusal to let Ankara run Kabul airport after US troops withdraw from Afghanistan.

“God willing, we will see what kind of talks we will have with the Taliban and see where these talks take us,” Erdogan told journalists in Istanbul. Turkey has been negotiating with US defence officials over its offer to help secure and run Kabul airport, which is key to allowing countries to retain a diplomatic presence in the war-torn country after the troop withdrawal. Erdogan and US President Joe Biden discussed the issue in their first face-to-face meeting on the margins of a NATO summit in June.

Turkey maintains hundreds of troops in Afghanistan, but a Turkish official told AFP that they were “not combat forces”. Ankara and Washington have been discussing issues such as financial and logistical support for Turkey’s mission from the United States and NATO, officials said. Last week, the Taliban called Turkey’s offer “reprehensible”. “We consider the stay of foreign forces in our homeland by any country under whatever pretext as occupation,” the group said.

Erdogan said the Taliban was not adopting “the right approach”. “In our view, the Taliban’s approach right now is not how a Muslim behaves to another Muslim,” he said, urging the insurgent group to stop its occupation. “We call on the Taliban… to show the world as soon as possible that peace prevails in Afghanistan.”

Turkey will have to come back on it's own merit. No NATO nation wants to stay there.

I'm glad they are going to sit at the table together and discuss the matter. Whether an agreement is reached or not, I hope the future relations between Afghanistan and Turkey are not harmed too much, if at all.

I hope even if they aren't able to agree on troops staying, maybe they could agree to cooperate in other fields.

Erdogan is the most hypocrite person I've seen. This guy had a 45 min long conversation with the new Israeli PM trying to take him into confidence. Sometimes he'd begin reciting Quran and sometimes he'd save suicide victims trying to jump off from the bridge.

In real, this man is just there to serve the cross and unfortunately this is what Turks have been doing. No matter how hard he tries to emerge as a Muslim hero, he'd be ALWAYS remembered who destabilized Syria while teaming up with USA when he could use these tactics on Israel.

Turks love the Uzbek Militia for their Turkish linkage. Northern Alliance and Dostum if you remember. Dostum lived in Turkey for long after Taliban took over the government and were craving for his blood due to his warcrimes. Turkey is trying to save these Uzbek warlords on behalf of US.

Is Pak ready to accept the blame from the rest of the world for the “alleged” atrocities done by the Taliban on the others?

Turkey had also plans to replace US in Syria and act as foot soldiers of US. They will receive some payback in other fields.

Turkey got paid for being the foot soldier in Korean War too. They liked that and will die for the right price.

For a #of reasons!!!

• Turkey has historical connections and interests in Afganistan.
• In the landlocked Afganistan, which is the Heart of Asia, the Kabul airport is the main source for the connection with the outside world.
• Once Turkey is out it'll be very difficult to get back given the other major powers, who aren't exactly angelic and innocent like babies. Even the Taliban have a "history" with them.
• If the airport falls the connection to the West, UN etc. is over. So, no humanitarian aid. Who do you think will face 10s of millions of refugees???
• If the West feels everything is lost who do you think will face the worst wrath??? Who will be in the FATF black list? Who will be under extreme trade/travel/finances etc. sanctions? Who'll lose $s from exports and remittances? Who'll be in the economic, financial etc. turmoil? What about the worst social turmoil in which country?
• Why do you think Pak is in another US QUAD with Afganistan and Uzbekistan?
• Etc.

Turkey was 4th largest combat troops supplier in Korean War having 740 soldiers killed for a cause that had nothing to do with them.
Turks did the same against Syria by coordinating with NATO and Takfiri Militias being responsible for millions of innocent deaths. Only if Turkey hadn't sided with US and Takfiris, Syria wouldn't have bled that much. But Erdogan's dreams of Turkish supremacy got him nuts which is hitting back now. Same way Mr Caliph is trying to get in Afghanistan jumping on the power of Uzbek Militias of Abdul Rasheed Dostum, the biggest war criminal.
