Turkey, Pakistan resolve to further strengthen defense cooperation

ANKARA (AA): Turkey and Pakistan reaffirmed the resolve to further strengthen defense cooperation after a two-day meeting among the high-level military officials of the two countries on Thursday.

The 15th round of Pakistan-Turkey High-Level Military Dialogue Group (HLMDG) decided that Turkey and Pakistan would work together to enhance defense cooperation, focusing on security and counter-terrorism, a statement by Pakistan’s Defense Ministry said.

General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, deputy chief of the Turkish General Staff, led the Turkish delegation, while Lt. Gen. (retired) Mian Muhammad Hilal Hussain, the secretary of defense, led the Pakistan delegation during the talks.

“During the HLMDG meeting, both delegations discussed all avenues of cooperation in military training, education, counter-terrorism, and defense industry cooperation including joint production and procurement.

Both sides shared perspectives on prevailing regional environment including the Middle East, South Asia, and Afghanistan,” the statement said.

It added that the meeting also took stock of the progress that has been made since the last HLMDG meeting held in Pakistan in April last year.

“The HLMDG is the highest level of institutional mechanism between Pakistan and Turkey, mandated to charter policies and action plans to promote ties in the defense field.

The next session of Pakistan-Turkey High-Level Military Dialogue Group (HLMDG) meeting will be held in Pakistan in 2021,” it said.

Lt. Gen. Hussain had separately called National Defense Minister of Turkey Hulusi Akar, Turkish General Staff Chief General Yasar Guler, Head of Presidency of Turkish Defense Industries Prof. Dr. Ismail Demir, and CEO of Turkish Aerospace Indus-tries (TAI) Dr. Temil Kotil.

The statement said that the Pakistan delegation had also visited defense industry firms including Baykar (UAV OEM), ASELSAN, HAVELSAN, and TAI.

Or at most off the shelf purchases. No JVs or anything that can advance industry. At least not apparent atm.

Pakistan would be wise to integrate Turkish firms in Pakistani supply chain ecosystem. Investing in these corporations to move lines of production in Pakistan, hiring and training local engineers in essence integrate in national supply grid. A solution for battle proven systems short of reinventing the wheel.

I think it pains me much to say this but we Pakistanis are a leech!

First we were leech to USA
We are a leech to the GCC nations
Than we became a Leech for China
and now we are a leech with Turkey

Unfortunately the only thing we are not a leech with is investing in and developing our own human resources or capabilities in light of our national interests.

I don't see our Leech status changing anytime soon

Just a side-note. In 2005-2006, the South African company ATE (now Paramount Group) was looking for a foreign partner to co-develop their 6-7-ton attack helicopter proposal. Totally ITAR-free design with turnkey transfer-of-technology (albeit ATE technology, not 3rd-party suppliers).

South Africa, Turkey, Eastern European companies are all options open for Pakistan that too İTAR free(maybe some subsystems like Turkish products) but Pakistanis too obsessed chasing after Goras and their shiny, capable but overpriced weapons.

We don't have that mentality. Atleast not most of us. That's why I say, qom ko terbiat ki sakht zaroorat hai.
