It just screams "more votes because I care for this country" by Erdoğan. I mean look, in Turkish it's called Turkiye. But in English it's Turkey. Just in Greek it's Ellas,Elladha and in English Greece. Or in German Deutschland,but in English Germany.

It's a silly change by the government. A small attempt in nationalism maybe.

Why should citizens of a country conflict with each other because of correcting the mispronunciation of their country's names? The fact that this has not been corrected in the UN until today is due to Turks do not care about such things.

I mean in Iran it was always(recent history) "Turkiye" but when it comes to internal matters you know how it is ....

In older books from ~500 years ago you may find Turkestan/Turkistan too.

The words belonging to the Iranian culture or region/place names were also transferred to Turkish in the same way. This is about long lasted neighborhood of both nations, even the culture of coexistence.

The current Turkish lands are also referred to as Turkomania on Marco Polo maps. These historical terminologies remain in the background, as you say, as English has become international.
