Turkey can choose ‘path of collision or cooperation’

Newly appointed Defense Minister Evangelos Apostolakis said Turkey should choose between “the path of collision and the path of cooperation” with Greece in his first statement in a handover ceremony at the ministry earlier on Tuesday.

Apostolakis, who resigned from the post as Hellenic Armed Forces Commander to take on his new role, said Greece is “steadily orientated towards peaceful coexistence and cooperation.”

“I want to remind our neighbours that whenever the logic of cooperation and trust prevailed, our people thrived. But whenever nationalisms prevailed, our people were miserable,” he said.

“The foundation of our relations must be respect for international law and that is the only red line in our relationship,” he added

Short comment, it needs to be said though. Apostolakis is a breath of fresh air when you try to compare him with the last defense minister we had, Kammenos (whose name literally translates to "burned" in Greek, an apt description for both his character and intellect).

Having said that, it was a very bad move by him to choose and accept that position. He will be out of the government by this summer, and he has tainted his record by doing this.

If you want coexistence and peace then threatening an inherently nationalist nation is probably not the way to go.

There is no way of peaceful coexisting until the situation in the Aegean region is solved to our satisfaction, I guess. I really want peace with Greece. Whenever this topic comes up, I think about a possible face-saving way out for both of us but I fail to come to an amicable solution.

As sad as it is, either stagnation or war; these are the two options we have, realistically speaking. I prefer the former one.

If you think about this objectively, the whole thing is pretty stupid in itself. It is extremely difficult for democracies to effectively compromise in matters that carry even notional national interest "importance". Simply because the maximal positions that the political fringe holds in each country becomes the immediate banner of the political opposition, against said compromise. It is essentially asking for a politician to vote himself out of his position, and burn himself with the mark of a traitor at the same time.

Pretty hilarious from a Real Politik point of view, but still extremely relevant to how the world works.

It is almost impossible Any compromise will be made without any kind of armed confrontation.

Who rules Greece is not important, nor is it totally state policy of Greece; but ''External...'' that airs such stance of Greece against Turkey thanks to the fact that Greeks are hostile to Turks at state and public level, which makes it a perfect ground to whip; otherwise, numbers are clear enough for the winner, if sanity on the table.

The ''External...'' get what is wanted in Agean and Mediterranean as in southern Cyprus.

In order for for peace to progress, both parties on this matter, must let go of that cancerous infection called "hubris." Because of they don't, then it will spell doom for both of them. Turkey needs to approach Greece, the same way Greece needs to approach Turkey with an extended hand for peace and harmony. War doesn't accomplish anything but destruction and senseless slaughter of humans on both sides. We are humans, we are better than the base mentality of arrogance and superiority. Live and let live my friends, life is too short to slit each other's throats over something that shall remain long after you're gone. We as humans ought to foster cordial relations with one another, to leave the world in peace for our children to inherit.

As anyone in this thread im also in favor of peace yet Greece must understand that all Turkey wants is a fair share in Aegean and Mediterranian.


Looking at the maps, one can easily see why Turkey refuses to accept Greek claims.

Greece can not expect Turkey to stay on its shores while everybody else exploits all the ressources we gotta be realistic here, Turkey will probably hold the status-quo as long as this situation prevails.
