Turk top general warns extremists should be avoided in Pakistan

Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Yasar Buyukanit warned on Monday supporting terrorism could have a "boomerang effect" and the political turmoil in Pakistan could open the way for the Taliban to seize the power and its nuclear weapons. (UPDATED)

"I hope the situation in Pakistan stabilizes soon. Any support should be given for that. Otherwise Taliban style administration will take the power", Buyukanit told in a keynote speech at two-day symposium entitled Global Terrorism and International Cooperation II in Ankara.

On Sunday, Pakistani President Perves Musharraf's political opponents, who dominated February 18 elections, agreed to form a government, heightening expectations that the unpopular Musharraf could be on the way out. The president also faces pressure from Islamic militants who have increase attacks since the election. Taliban fighters have also expanded their reach beyond the border with Afghanistan, raising international concern about the security of the country's nuclear arsenal.

Buyukanit said an institution like the Taliban "could control Pakistan if the current administration becomes ineffective" and this could result in a terrorist organization gaining control of nuclear arms for the first time.

Pakistani officials have offered assurances that the weapons are secure. In January, the operational chief in charge of the arsenal, Khalid Kidwai, told reporters that Pakistan has 10,000 soldiers to keep the weapons safe and has received up to US$10 million in U.S. assistance to enhance security.

'BOOMERANG EFFECT'
Buyukanit also said the countries directly or implicitly used terrorist organizations to destabilize other nations during Cold War and not the terrorist organization but also its supporters are responsible from the bloodshed of such an attack.

"Terrorism is not the real face of an incident; it is the cover that hides it. What someone is trying to do cannot be understood unless this cover is lifted", he added.

Buyukanit said the impact of globalization on terrorism could be handled as exploitation of new capabilities that were introduced by globalization by the terrorist organizations.

"One of the most important impacts of globalization is that it brings forth some organizations that are capable of affecting the policies and decisions of national states. Terrorist organizations are trying to change government policies by sending messages to governments and societies through Violence," Buyukanit told.

His remarks may be unpalatable to most Pakistani's especially comming from a Turkish General and as Gen M has great admiration for the Turkish State but I think what he says is very true in most aspects.

Not true at all, i think Gen Yasar is quite under wrong impression. And its not big deal for a turkish general to be mispercieving of the whole situation.

He stated his own research based on biased articles which makes him self responsible for such statement.

Supprising. What got into the general's head, well only he knows, however rest assured that nothing is going to happen to pakistan's nuclear weapons.
As a pakistani however i am very much disappointed with his remarks after all turkey is a friendly country to pakistan and statements like these should be avoided. We already have enough of the western BS to handle and we certainly do not need anymore.

That's one of the problems with religious extremism. Other than that they never wanted Pakistan and their hobbies include blowing people up, they're anti-Turk.

Do you know who this General is before you made those highlighted comments rubbishing him ?

Let me educate you ? He is the Chief of Army Staff of Turkey and a very good friend of General M. He also can sack the elected Govt. if they allow women to wear scarves or do anything unsecular in Turkey.

I have not yet seen any one in the Pakistani Govt. condemn that statement till date unlike when they jump to do the same if a US General says the same ?

I also see all the so called Ummah lovers are silent when the unofficial heads of the seat of the one and only ex Caliphite empire voices his concerns in a tone similiar to the rest of the world.

AN whether it is from US a country where a bomber flies away with nuclear tripped crusie missles and no one knows about it or whether it is turkey where suddenly an army chief stands up and say something that is none of his bloody business, the point is that our nuclear weapons are safe, as safe as they can be in anyother country, so extremist having access to them is nothing more then a personal BS first created by the WEST in paticular the US. As for the jumping point of view well you need to understand that pakistan did not jumped the first time when US said so, it was not until US got completely out of its freaking mind and started talking about a military action against our nuclear programe. And so it was our right to respond to that. That however is not the case with turkey as turkey has not reached the same level. If they do i'm sure the GOP will respond.
By the way we are not bound in anyway to give clearifications over our nuclear programe to every nation who sudenly jumps up and start posing it as a threat, we dont asks for theirs and we certainly dont appreciate theirs.

Assalamulaykum,

Yeah Right... Yo Mr. Turkish General...go worry about your PKK rebels. Okay? :D

So he is basically saying that a bunch of illiterate and wild people are going to take over the country and it's nuclear assets, just because the PML-N and the PPP are going to try to oust Musharraf out. What a clever Analysis; I must say. Hes such a propaganda machine.

Go do your research Mr. General, other than saying blatant remarks and nonsense.

Verily, this General is just talking just to get attention .
