Marsha Ivins: Space Tourism a Reality in Five Years in Tunisia
22 July 2011
“Several US and European companies have drawn up programmes of flights and exploration visits into the space and around the orbit. These programmes will be tested by the end of 2011,” says U.S. astronaut Marsha Ivins.

The latter, on a two-day visit in Tunisia as part of the Tunisian-American scientific and cultural exchange, said Wednesday that space tourism will be a reality within three to five years.

She stressed that this kind of trips into the space requires a lot of funding from both visitors and organising companies, wondering if “there is really a market for this kind of tourism”

Several countries and nationalities are co-operating in space programmes of NASA, she added, stressing that the contribution of the private sector remains fundamental in developing this field and training youths.

Marsha Ivins talked, on Wednesday morning in Tunis Science City, about her experience in the space. She will visit, on Thursday, the “Jeunes Sciences” Association of Tunis.

Marsha Ivins, who earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering, spent 1,342 hours in space in five flights, the last one dates back to 2001.
