Liz Truss has defended the Falklands as “part of the British family” after China backed Argentina’s claim over the South American islands.
The foreign secretary tweeted that “China must respect the Falklands’ sovereignty” after the Argentinian president, Alberto Fernández, met China’s President Xi on the fringes of the Beijing Winter Olympics.

According to a statement on the website of the Chinese embassy in the UK, the two leaders spoke of their “deep friendship” and Argentina signed up to China’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative, a state-backed campaign for global influence.

But they also signed an agreement in which China reasserted its support for Argentina’s claim to the Falklands, while Fernández backed Xi’s one-China policy, which claims Taiwan as its own.
The statement said Argentina should be able to “fully exercise its sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falklands) Islands issue”.

But Truss said: “We completely reject any questions over sovereignty of the Falklands. The Falklands are part of the British family and we will defend their right to self-determination. China must respect the Falklands’ sovereignty.”

Chen Weihua, a journalist for China Daily, an English-language newspaper owned by the Chinese Communist party, replied: “But it’s OK for UK to challenge China’s sovereignty in the South China Sea by sending navy vessels? At least China has not sent its navy near the Malvinas, or what you call the Falklands.”

Xi has also met Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, in recent days. The two leaders pushed back against US pressure and declared their opposition to any expansion of Nato – a key issue in the current tensions on the Ukrainian border.

In a joint statement, they criticised “interference in the internal affairs” of other states and, in a thinly veiled reference to the west, said: “Some forces representing a minority on the world stage continue to advocate unilateral approaches to resolving international problems and resort to military policy.”

China has increasingly shown support for Moscow in its dispute with Ukraine, which is threatening to escalate into armed conflict.

The Conservative MP and chair of the Commons defence select committee, Tobias Ellwood, has warned of the coming together of China and Russia. After the leaders’ meeting, he tweeted: “Putin is not in China to discuss the bobsleigh, but to further align Russia away from the west to the east. This is the axis of power that will dominate our era.

“Any sanctions we impose will only assist Putin with his aim. This is the bigger picture we are missing.”

On Sunday, Ellwood added: “With China now onside, the Russian invasion into Ukraine is imminent. Our window for the west to prevent this is now closing fast.”

Basically a tit-for-tat retaliation from China in response to the UK's recent stances on Hongkong/Xinjiang/SCS.

It's a total mess, domestically and internationally, for the current UK government, probably the worst one in dealing with any crisis after WWII. Especially after Brexit, which has left the UK with diminishing global influence. Britain is further marginised by the EU, with weaker relationship with France/Germany, waning Eastern European ties on migration/manufacturing/logistics, and the European Commission's stance on not considering Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, to be part of the United Kingdom, Spain might one day see an opportunity to wedge in again.

Well the Falklands also voted just like the Argentinians...why is what they want not applicable but the Argentinian's somehow is?

Spanish colony Argentina declared independence. British colony Falklands decides not to.

Ex Spanish colony say British colony should be theirs too. Falkands says "huh?".

I suppose Argentina should have taken over Brazil in 1816 too in a land grab since they were still a colony of the Portuguese instead of letting them get their own Independence in 1822.

Yup man. British after capture Falkland kick out all the argentinian and replace them with English speaking and then decide a referendum.

So US and Japan shouldn't complain about kuril island living with all Russian since a referendum will have all Russian vote for staying with Russia rule.

I think it was more like the colonial Dutch first discovered
which was then settled in the East by the colonial French
which was then settled in the West by the colonial British
who then both got kicked out by the colonial Spanish
who then got kicked out by the colonial British
who then got kicked out by the colonial Spanish
who then got kicked out by the colonial British

then Argentina claimed everything.

So by your theory, China are free to kick white american out of Guam or Hawaii if opportunity arises and that will claim as righteous move since white are not the indigenous people?

Or maybe even kick white american out of US continent. :enjoy:

@Musings .
I'm glad this post wasn't totally wasted.

Bob Dylan will never be wasted on me bro.

A trivial tiny land mass near Argentina has no real significance on the world - has become significant because there is potential raw materials in the ice cap. Malvinas is Argentinian. Same reason Hong Kong and Singapore is Chinese - same reason Gibraltor is Spanish. The British are no longer an empire - more like a local emprorium local 7 till 11 grocer. Give back whats not yours and stop making out your great. There is nothing great about Great Britain. The times are a changing................ indeed.

Argentina is welcome to try to recover the Falklands but here is what they have to face:

This time the UK will show no mercy on the Argentines, who are white colonial settlers from Spain and Italy, and bomb Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina to really show the Argentines not to mess with a far superior power.

We are not harping on,we are selling JF-17 to argentina. And if argentina want nuclear submarine,we will sell them too I suppose.

If the goal is to capture the Falklands. Sell them them ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. So they can destroy the radars, SAMs and airfields on Falklands.

China/Russia could easily give weapons to Argentina so they could be armed to the teeth. Argentina if it wanted to could capture Falkland by weapons received from China/Russia. It would rather be a easy task.

who are white colonial settlers from Spain and Italy,
Yeah UK has no colonial history....

JF-17s would be eaten for breakfast, lunch and dinner by the Typhoons permanently based in the Falklands.

Nuclear submarines for Argentina with no experience in this type of submarine and costing 1 billion dollars each?

Argentines are bankrupt and have no money as they are lazy and corrupt.

Are you even aware that all your SSNs are currently way inferior to the latest UK has?

This is all talk and no substance.

Yes give them ballistic missiles and cruise missiles why stop there go ahead and pull the trigger for them as well.
The only reason they didn't get their back side handed to them last time was because Maggie and the political leaders didn't want mainland Argentina targeted.

Give them the above and see Bueno Aires burn.

What you forget is the South American situation, anything you give to Argentina, Chile will likely feel threatened and want to have something to balance the situation. Argentinas only benefit is in using Falklands to divert public attention away from their mess of a country.

Northern Ireland and Scotland are more important to the UK. Britain will be busy one day.

Also they forget that with current international treaties if China or any other country was to arm Argentina, it will take more than a decade for them to come up to a standard to pose any meaningful threat, Argentina AF and Army used to be good they had decent exposure and equipment at their disposal. Years of financial ruin has dented this and it will take time to recover, Argentina cannot sustain such a rampant increase in military spend so China will have to bankroll them.

A few expensive toys will not do much, specially when the other country - in this case UK can actually hit mainland Argentina without being anywhere near Falklands.

That is still not busy enough to not being able to spank some deluded Argentinians.
Yes we have differences between the English, the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish but when that time comes they will be resolved amicably.
