Trump suspends H1B, H4 visas till year end

Trump was meant to be harsh on Pakistan. @pothead I thought he would increase Indian ties to counter china.

Where in the world did you see me pushing India into US camp?
All we need from US is a transactional relationship & nothing more.

Chinese are looking towards pakistan & Nepal to fight India and bail them out,
We are confident on our military...

Regarding H1B, it's internal US matter....they are perfectly entitled to allow or not allow anyone in their country.

. .
This makes no sense since most high skilled workers didn't lose their jobs in this crisis. This will only exacerbate the lack of skill talent in the US. Call me crazy but i don't think the Billy from Arkansas is up to task of replacing Patel the programmer or Yang the researcher anytime soon.

. .
Ok, you are crazy

Hehe, Boeing would probably wished they took Billy from Arkansas instead of 9 dollar an hour "high skilled" Patel
The problem is that Billy doesn't have the degree or the skills to take that job, the reason for the H1B visa program at the beginning was that the technology sector was and is growing very fast so there was a talent scarcity, because universities were not graduating enough people to fill those application. The reason?, i don't know, maybe is too expensive for the average American or the Average American don't like STEM carriers too much.

This is from Forbes:
"How bad is the shortage of American students? According to the non-partisan National Foundation for American Policy, in 2017 foreign nationals accounted for 81% of electrical engineering majors and grad students in this country. Foreign students make up three quarters of the majors and grad students in industrial engineering; 62% in mechanical engineering; 55%, or more than half, of those studying materials and metallurgic engineering."

.
This is from Forbes:
That part you highlighted only indicates percentage of foreign nationals studying those degrees, it in no way indicates there that many jobs for all of them to take. There can be 1 million foreign graduates and 100 thousand local graduates, but how many jobs are there in those field ?

Here is a quote from US government website which is far more credible than Forbes in this topic :

"The H-1B visa program should help U.S. companies recruit highly-skilled aliens when there is a shortage of qualified workers in the country. Yet, too many American workers who are as qualified, willing, and deserving to work in these fields have been ignored or unfairly disadvantaged"

.
It is a good step, and in American interest. If they want highly skilled people, instead of basic coders, it is their prerogative.
Every country will protect its jobs, for a while, after this pandemic.
Economies will take a year to two, to bounce back.

.
This move is nothing more than election-year gimmicking. Anti-immigration policies energize Trump's mostly white and working-class supporters.

Even those foreign students are not enough to fill many positions in the U.S tech sector, there will be an inevitable shortage of talent, the U.S tech sector is the biggest in the world.
One of the biggest advantages of the US that i think the people correctly point out is that while China has access to a talent pool of 1.400 billion the US has access to a talent pool 7.100 Billion and that include China talent.

Take that with a truck of salt. This people are nationalist, so they will say whatever they want to archive their goals.
If the really wanted to help U.S. Skill workers the should have worked to reduce college cost and help people to study STEMs careers first.

True. Hardly has any effect on reality.

There is a need for genuine high tech individuals here in the US. However, most of the H1B program slots have been gobbled up by the Indian consulting firms like TCS, Infosys, HCL etc, which are merely replacing higher paying US jobs with cheaper Indian labor.

Perhaps US should tweak the H1B program for only US based employers with more than 70% US based employees. That would satisfy all, in my opinion.

There are tons of Americans with high edu. But companies use loopholes to hire Indians because Indians work for less than a fraction.

Furthermore Indians in United States try to influence decisions to get Indian only workers.

Still this decision by Trump is just election gimmick only. Any company will hire someone local with a 6 month or year long contract. Once this decision expires, they will be back to square one.

The whole point of H-1B program was to complement, not replace, existing employees. But companies have been using it (abetted by BPOs) to replace workers. Rules should be tightened to prevent such abuses. On the whole, US has benefitted from such a program by attracting high-skilled workers.

Trump will sort out the Indian job thieves

Most of these H1B indians in the US also happen to the most active on internet forums having delusions of indian grandeur , the howdy modi crowd

Actually this make sense for Trump, since he hates American tech being stolen, by reducing the amount of new foreigner scientist.
