That's the exact intention in how it is being used in this case, its about respect and solidarity. Its important I suppose that is communicated, I know that Haka can be taken out of context. It can look like a strange way to express support and respect but we use it at funerals, weddings, welcoming ceremonies, formal events and many other occasions.

The issue comes from it looking like a dance and a song. Which in most eastern cultures is used for happiness not with solidarity and sadness. That's where he was confused and asked why they are dancing. Just a cultural difference.

And the religion or Islam has given a sense of dignity to quite a few peoples. They make 25% of humanity.
