That's the exact intention in how it is being used in this case, its about respect and solidarity. Its important I suppose that is communicated, I know that Haka can be taken out of context. It can look like a strange way to express support and respect but we use it at funerals, weddings, welcoming ceremonies, formal events and many other occasions.

The issue comes from it looking like a dance and a song. Which in most eastern cultures is used for happiness not with solidarity and sadness. That's where he was confused and asked why they are dancing. Just a cultural difference.

I am really impressed with prime minister of new Zealand the way she did handle this terror incident in her country. She had empathy, compassion and sincerity in her words and actions for victims. New zelander are blessed to have such person as their leader
