I'm pretty sure I saw him perform in the US (I think in 2011 or 2012 -- time flies) -- such a bright promising life cut short -- unimaginable -- Afghans should understand (and Pakistanis too) that security is built in Universities and not in munitions factories or dance halls.
Afghanistan Institute of Music (set up by Professor Sarmast) takes disadvantages kids (including homeless and street kids) and trains them in music.
Sami was a graduate of that school and had won a scholarship to AUAF -- he was killed on his second day there.
Afghanistan cannot catch a break.
BTW as a related tangent: I've heard that Professor Sarmast's father was asked to write a poem for Pakistan but have not found a good reference to which one or even if it is true -- if you have one please do share. I was led to believe that it was "Paymuna Bede" but that was incorrect.
