What's new

traders / businesses going on strike . IMF screwing pakistan

The greatest exposition of patriotism is paying taxes. USA, Europe, China are great precisely because the citizens pay taxes. In Pakistan they all talk about ummah, Islam and ideologies but expect the state to live on farts. The fact is and Pakistan is now famous for this. People in Pakistan do not pay taxes. It has one of the largest undocumented economies in the world.

if people think IMF is so evil and a Yahoodi conspiracy pay your fcukin taxes and the Pakistan would not have to go to IMF twice every decade. Countries can't live of farting ....

A car runs on petrol. No petrol and it stops. IMF is the emergency petrol lender. If you don't want to put petrol in the car yourself then don't be surprised if you end up being forced to borrow petrol from IMF.

Frankly if people don't want to pay taxes the state will fail. The choices are brutal and this applies to every country on earth -

1. either you pay taxes
2. either you borrow
3. either you fail

Look at the gigantic debt Pakistan is now under. Do you think the country can be ran anymore by borrowing more money? So only option pay the taxes. Majority of traders, cloth vendors, shops, barbers, food places etc etc do not even pay a rupee in tax. In Pakistan everybody has got so used to not paying taxes that they think they are being abused if they have to pay taxes.

Wtf?

IF IK can recover at least some of the promised US$200bn, loans by KSA/UAE will be written off, or a new aid pkg will come.
Yes it can be recovered provided faith is put in ALLAH swt' and one follows the guidelines given in Quran & Sunnah ----- Pakistan needs kinda revolution, whereas Imran Khan is a celebrity imposed on us, bad decision by the establishment (probably they had no other choice) --- a revolutionary man brings the masses on his side, Mr Imran Khan is doing the opposite.

You want to recover the looted money, confiscate the properties of top politicians, bureaucrats, media owners, lawyers, judges etc., (corrupt ones) ---- Going after just sharif & zardari will give you peanuts.

To bring the economy on track,
declare Riba' haram -- direct all financial institutions to adjust their balance sheets+ honor international commitments.

Frame a simplified taxation system (in urdu) with reasonable tax rates.---- Taxes must be on savings for salaried class and small businesses -- zero taxes on necessities like electricity, gas (up to specific limit), fruits, vegetables, groceries etc., ---- Tax luxuries heavily.

We are mainly agriculture country, put main focus on agriculture .--- just middle east is billions of dollars food market ---- Revive agri related textile industry.

Make corruption a capital offence.

Make the infrastructure conducive for local production -- provide all the necessary tools, electricity+gas+ reasonable taxes+ training etc., --- direct the banks to provide loans on profit/loss sharing basis, no more free lunch for banks.

I am living in the West, probably UK ---- this only shows your immaturity.

Pakistanis are kinda lakeer ke fakeer, they have this cut copy paste mentality -- Why follow others, make your own system, make your own recipe.

Yes we are already ripening the fruits of your copy/ paste recipe, your recipe has brought inflation, unemployment, concentration of wealth in elitists hands, debt trap.

KARACHI: The business community announced to observe countrywide shutter down strike on July 13 (Saturday) against hike in sales tax. All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran (APAT) announced a nationwide shutter-down strike from July 13. A strike was underway in Gujranwala by the Anjuman-e-Tajran Cloth Board, while the association's president announced that they would keep all shops and markets closed on Tuesday as well. Markets and shops would remain closed in Saeed Nagri Bazaar, Urdu Bazaar, Thakur Singh Bazaar, and Sarafa Bazaar for two days. The association's president threatened that the strike might continue indefinitely if the additional taxes are not withdrawn.

A similar strike against rise in taxes was going on in Faisalabad as well, with markets including Ghalla Mandi and Chowk Ghanta Ghar completely closed.

Traders and businessmen called a strike against imposition of 17 percent sales tax in the tribal districts as well, with as many as 35 steel mills reportedly shut down in the tribal regions. The president of the Fata Steel Mills Association has threatened to protest outside the provincial assembly if the tax is not withdrawn.

The marble industry was also affected in Mardan, with factory owners and labourers staging a protest rally from the industrial estate to the Commissioner's office against the government for the rise in sales tax.

The protesters said that the government was not willing to budge despite the fact that marble factories in the province had been closed for the past nine days.

President of the All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajran Ittehad said that the strike would be called against "the anti-trader policies announced by the government in the budget".

Meanwhile, the Markazi Tanzeem-e-Tajran, an organisation of traders announced to support countrywide shutter down strike on Saturday (July 13). Addressing a news conference after a meeting of different bodies of traders here, Muhammad Kashif Chaudhry rejected the budget 2019-2020 saying the traders would continue to protest till acceptance of their demands.

He said that there would be no talks with the government till their demands are accepted saying all efforts to divide the traders community would be foiled. He said the government was given 32-point charter of demands which was not given due consideration despite passage of July 7 deadline. Pakistan Traders alliance Chairman Shaikh Saleem, President Tanzeem-e-Tajran Punjab Sharjeel Mir and others were also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Ajmal Baloch, President All Pakistan Markazi Anjuman-e-Tajran and Khalid Chaudhry, Secretary Information Traders Action Committee Islamabad held a meeting with traders of the Islamabad Capital Territory on Wednesday and appealed them to fully participate in the nationwide shutter down strike successful on July 13, Saturday to express resentment over tax measures announced in the national budget by the federal government.

Ajmal Baloch said that shutter down strike would not be against the government, rather it would be against the IMF-dictated anti-traders’ tax measures in budget. He said the detail of conditions given in the report released by IMF on Monday was quite disturbing as implementation of these conditions would further squeeze the business activities and economy.

He said that FBR Chairman had been advising people on how to avoid tax payment and now he wanted to bring people into tax net within days, which was not feasible. He said that the government should have trained people on tax matters and created awareness in them about the benefits of tax payment, but nothing of this sort was done while amnesty scheme also seemed to have flopped. He said that FBR was not ready to listen to traders due to which trading community was worried while people were also facing great inflation.

He demanded that Prime Minister Imran Khan in consultation with traders should announce forthwith amendments in the budget; otherwise traders would go for complete shutter down on Saturday.

Khalid Chaudhry former Senior Vice President ICCI and Secretary Information Traders Action Committee Islamabad said that without bringing any reforms in FBR, the government has handed over budget matters to the IMF. He said that increase in dollar price has brought a new wave of inflation in the country while imposition of new taxes in budget has created great concerns in the business community.

He appealed to traders to observe shutter down on Saturday for protection of their business interests.
Well noone wants to pay taxes and no one will lend us anymore... so only option is to print notes..
Once that doenst work we should disband Pakistan and who ever out new masters will be will tax us with "danda"

Ok you have a point on the copying mentality what may have worked for the Asian Tigers,Gulf states,Turkey etc may not work but learning some of their examples is not wrong however the main bulk of the problem is not systems its mentality, the problem is Pakistanis have become complacent in couruption, its molded in the psyche will take a while to change IK cant do much he wont bring miracles I doubt his policies and targets will be met but at least the ball rolling and getting people to the grind is what I hope and think will happen

.
It's not easy to talk to people who have cultists mentality. ---- All those who are attached with or support this barbaric Taxation system of ours are in deep trouble in next life (it all goes down to one's faith)

Harassment/environment of fear always destroys the economy --- even if this nation is Tax chor, the way forward is not harassment. -

The day FBR gets fixed+ our rulers stop taking dictation from IMF, almost 50% of things will get fixed.

PTi govt and it's youth cries about under invoicing/tax invasion --- They never tried to find out the reason -- with current taxation system/rates, businesses will close down 100% -- The traders community, majority of them are small traders not earning more than 60-80k per month.--- Next in line are medium traders, most of these are traders are also importers and are already in tax net ---- the Big ones are like other big mafias, Govt can go and get them, no issues.

Unless there's reasonable tax rates and honest people running tax system, nothing will change.
Actually noone pays tax willingly ..there doesnt exist a single successful tax system where people willingly paid tax

Problem is not harrsement but harassment of existing tax payers and lack of harssment of tax evader.i.e choor ko nahin balkh iman daar ko pakro

When people will see their standard of living improving --- Govts providing them health-education- security and other basic facilities, I am sure they will pay willingly --- We all know how much corrupt our govt depts are, electricity/gas , you just name it --- Why should people pay their hard earned Halal money only to go in the pockets of haram khors.

Existing Tax payers are not only being harassed but they are being burdened with more taxes --- current taxation system/rates aren't sustainable.-- Businesses have already taken a massive hit and if the present environment continues, they will start closing down --- The owners can survive for X amount of time but it's the workers/employees who will suffer and this could lead to social unrest.

And gov will get money from thin air to do all that. Tax evaders are criminals all over civilised world, its about time Pakistan joined their ranks.
