What's new

Top US officials fly around pitting countries against China. Where is our foreign office????????????

Korean dramas and shows peaked 5-10 years ago , and now they are much less appealing, softpower doesn't mean appeal for teen girls only and Calling China a country of dog and bat eaters who are killing Muslims in concentration camps shows you lost it due to blind anger towards China, please stay sane.

You misunderstood me. I was saying that is how people view China, accurate or not. It demonstrates China has little ability in controlling its image.

PEW issues country favorability poll every year, US and China are largely in the same bracket, when a country becomes a dominant power, very often it becomes less popular.

Most of the lower marks for the US is derived from Trump's unpopularity and also the aggressiveness of American foreign policy.

American pop culture, societal ideals, culture remain very attractive to the rest of the world. China, not so much. Perhaps this may change in 30 years but China right now isn't very attractive culturally.

Western cultures colonized the world for the past 300 years and had long become a dominant culture across the world, English language is one good example, Chinese culture is very alien to most part of the world and being considered an outlier, I don't think this situation will change much in the future.

Not at all!,did you confuse Europe as whole world? Whatever culture that Americans refer to isn't at all attractive to the world and even Americans seems to be drawn toward Eastern values more and more.
What's actually attractive about America to the rest of the world is its economy and the global corporates therein.

But when China takes over in economy and technological leadership US will lose its shine.
Eastern culture is far superior and alluring than anything in the west.
Regardless nowadays,
teens all over the world basically wants bts type bf.
The millennials would rather leave their country and flock toward Japan and live there even if it meant working 10 hours a day
The cultural enthusiast very much prefers China or even korea or japan over West any day.

This is the same here in IN too.

The US mostly attracts naive and shallow people with the image of "glamour" and "Luxury" .

I think you underestimate the attractiveness of American culture because it is so widespread, so dominant that it is like water to a fish. South Korea's pop culture is newly popular so it might be making a deep impression on you. But over the world, American popular culture is still dominant. China's pop culture is nowhere to be seen.

True, but South Korea has proven that you can be an Asian country and develop a globally successful cultural brand.

I didn't highlight pop culture. Of course american pop music is way more widespread and influencial,it's english after all and the mtvs and such have always promoted American pop culture to every nook and corner of the world for almost half a century, that made sure that the US pop culture left a prominent impression all across the world.

You hate Pelosi but what we think doesn't matter. Only what the elite politicians and billionaires think really matters. Everyone at that conference was an elite politician, general or billionaire. For them to applaud Fu Ying is worth more than random girls liking Kpop.

I don't think we are looking at the same chart. China is 51% favorable, South Korea is 47%. China is also more unfavorable than South Korea. That just means more people are undecided on South Korea.

I have benefitted from the Kpop craze but that doesn't mean I think Kpop is everything or that Kpop matters to the survival of the Korean nation. BTW, many Kpop bands have Chinese members i.e. Lay (Zhang Yixin), Kris Wu, Henry Lau. I don't hate Kpop or think it is useless, it is just not useful for the purposes of political or economic power.

For all it's soft power, did you know Japan sanctioned South Korea in 2019? Which country lifted a finger to help South Korea other than China? All of South Korean allies abandoned it. Is South Korea able to convert soft power to geopolitical or economic gains? I don't see it.

PS: what industry audits mean is that nobody is trusted by default. It does not matter where you come from. Any supplier who meets audit and test requirements is trusted, otherwise they aren't, there's no room for subjectivity.

You are analyzing that chart wrong. The areas where S. Korea's popularity dips are areas that hate US hegemony. S. Korea is seen as a US ally so its popularity dips in those countries. Overall, S. Korea has pretty high favorability and it's probably higher now.

Doesn't matter if there are Chinese members in Kpop bands, they are still Kpop bands. They primarily promote S. Korea's image.

S. Korea is 1/30th the size of China. You better hope China has more hard power. That's not even a fair comparison. The real question is why a country with 1/30th the size of China has 10X more soft power?

Again, soft power is not just about music bands, in general, the world knows about China way more than Korea. Countries like Korea still live in the shadow of China and US.

S. Korea dismisses Trump's remark that Korea was "part of China"

China doesn't have much soft power right now, but with her growing technological strength, it's gaining on, increasingly popular Chinese APPs like Tik Tok is a recent example.

It's not hard power, South Korea got sanctioned by Japan and nobody ois helping it. If it got help and everyone condemned Japan, it would be an example of good soft power.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/01/business/japan-south-korea-trade.html

But unfortunately South Korea doesn't even get lip service from other countries condemning Japan, much less pressuring Japan to resume normal trade with South Korea.
