Youths in Vadodara on Sunday celebrated 'LaTomatina' to mark the Friendship Day, perhaps unmindful of the fact that price of the commodity has soared to Rs. 100 per kg in markets.

The local 'La Tomatina' event (in which participants hurl tomatoes and get involved in the tomato fight) was organised at a private farm house, located on Sama-Savli Road on the outskirts of the city.

"The tomato hurling festival was organised for enjoyment and youths from Surat, Vadodara and neighbouring Vallabhvidya Nagar participated in it," said organiser of the event who identified himself only as Abhishek.

However, the local 'La Tomatina' event did not go down well with many, including former minister and the chairman of the Gujarat Civil Supply Corporation Bhupendra Lakhawala.

"Tomatoes should not have been wasted like this as it is a very costly vegetable, priced at Rs. 100 per kg in the market today," he said.

According to estimates, three tonne of tomatoes were used in this event which lasted two hours, where every participant was charged an entry fee of Rs. 300.

One of the participants said that those who took part in the event had no regrets.

Meanwhile, many citizens have demanded a stern action against the organisers and also the participants for "wasting" precious tomatoes.

. . . .
As long as the farmers are getting their due payment for those tomatoes, such festivals are fine. After all, it's the buyer's purview about whether he wishes to eat those tomatoes or let's them rot away or squashes them in a private farm-house.

This is the kind of faulty reasoning that comes up when Gita is not taught in the school :disagree:

There is the Law, then there is Ethics, then there is Morality and then there is Social Responsibility.

There is following the law, then there is following Dharma.

I know its not fashionable to speak of Dharma, that is why maybe you can discuss the ethics and morality of such action ?

Of course they could have donated those tomatoes to the poor and needy. But it's up to them what kind of impact they like to have on the society. As long as the haven't broken any law, I'd ignore them. After all we've much bigger law-breakers to tackle.

An Ambani building a billion dollar home for his family of five, to me, is a much bigger breach of dharma than a bunch of kids wallowing in tomatoes that they paid for.

They are not required to "donate" those tomatoes.

Just not waste them. Even the poor buy food in India. They do not live on hand outs.

Its a concept similar to not leaving food in the plate when you are finished eating. Not throwing food in the dustbin. Not wasting food. Because millions go hungry everyday. Not just in India.

A concept similar to not wasting water, or conserving energy or reducing your carbon footprint or not burning petrol even though you can afford it.

Any waste, be it Ambani or cherawala is a sin against society.

I get that, but it's something that obviously cannot be enforced or made obligatory.

Such wastage sure is nothing to be proud of, but given that millions of tons of essential grains rot away every year in our granaries and warehouses, it's a very small wastage in comparison. Got to plug the larger holes before we decide to fix the smaller ones.

Necessity is mother of all invention ...when food price rises everyone create noise ..so many farmers committed suicide last decade then too all created noise ...there is corelation between two ...i never heard anybody weeping for farmer when 10 rs fetches 3 kg ...who cares ? But when farmer starts to get his due share everyone starts to pressurise govt to lower price ..no youngster now dreams about farming ..fertile land left abandoned not because lack of human power but because it will be loss in monetary terms for farmer ...let the price rise ...let production and demand ballance out each other ...let the demand for agri product rise ...i dont care if it is fun or food that gives farmer his due ..

It cannot be enforced by law, but it can be enforced through social boycott, media trial and shaming the perpetrators.

Which is why we had the khap panchayats, panchayats, councils of elders etc...but secular are busy trying to destroy of ayything that safeguards our value systems.

Modi and his govt. is already aware of the wastage by FCI and has spoken extensively about it. It is more important to stop smaller one's like these. Its like shaming people when they urinate on the walls.

The farmer never gets his due, its the middle man who makes the money during food price inflation.

Price rise should be natural, not artificial due to hoarding or speculative trading on food items in commodity exchanges.

Get educated on how the system works before offering suggestions.

Their money their property their choice.

End of the story.

Whether you like it or not is another question.

Yes we see this Christian value system in practice in the west all the time. Spare us your wisdom.

As Gandhi said, the earth can sustain's everybody's need, not everybody's GREED.

surprisingly,it was happened in high moral 'Gujarat'....

You want me to stop because you dont like it ?

Try harder.

Yes we see how this system works in the west, thats why millions of Indians want to see it for themselves.

The protection of property is the most important factor for a healthy economy and not some socialist BS comments made by Gandhi.
But you surely know how he envisaged India`s economy to be.

Liberalization is the reason why India experienced improvements in its economy.
