Russia to Prosecute Crimean Tatar Protesters Over Unrest
5363-02-TATARS-tag_reuters.jpg

Reuters Russian security forces blocking the way for Crimean Tatars crossing a checkpoint between Crimea and Kherson.
Thousands of Crimean Tatars on Saturday responded to news that their spiritual leader had been banned from the peninsula by blocking several highways in a tense standoff with riot police — the first sign that the Muslim ethnic group's discontent with Russian authorities may lead to turmoil.
On Saturday, Crimean authorities promised to dish out criminal charges to the group, which numbered about five thousand, according to the BBC Russian service. The group broke through border posts near the city of Armyansk and crossed the border into the buffer zone between Ukraine and the Crimean peninsula to meet Mustafa Dzhemilev, former head of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, the ethnic group's representative body.
The group blocked several highways near Simferopol, Bakhchysarai, Stary Krym, Yevpatoriya and Oktyabrskoye, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
The incident seems to vindicate analysts' earlier warnings that the Muslim ethnic group's disaffection with Russian authorities may lead to instability in the region. Many Crimean Tatars, who account for more than 10 percent of the Crimean peninsula's population, opposed the territory's annexation by Russia in March.
"Before the annexation many predicted that Crimean Tatars would become a headache for Russians, and now the head is already aching," said Alexei Malashenko, an Islamic studies expert at the Carnegie Moscow Center.
Malashenko warned that such protests could eventually destabilize Crimea, adding that some Crimean Tatars had already joined the Hizb-ut-Tahrir Islamist organization and even fought in Syria.
He attributed the strained ties between Crimean Tatars and Russia to "bad blood" left over from Nazi Germany, when some Crimean Tatars collaborated with Germany during its occupation of the peninsula in 1942 to 1943, and Stalin used this as an excuse for deporting the entire group to Uzbekistan in 1944.
Crimean authorities were quick to demonstrate that they would not tolerate such disorder, however.
Natalya Poklonskaya, the prosecutor of Crimea, said at a news conference Saturday that she had sent requests to the Investigative Committee and Federal Security Service to open criminal cases against the protesters, Ekho Moskvy radio reported.
Dzhemilev, a former Soviet dissident, headed the Mejlis from 1991 to 2013 and is currently a member of Ukraine's Supreme Rada and an ally of Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko's Fatherland party. He has been a vocal critic of Russia's takeover of Crimea.
Sergei Aksyonov, acting head of Crimea, said Friday that Dzhemilev was not welcome on the peninsula.
"This man has undoubtedly been instructed by Western intelligence agencies to destabilize the situation," Aksyonov wrote on Facebook. "We will not allow peace and stability to be broken. We will not let in anyone who is coming to us with bad intentions."
Dzhemilev told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday that he had also been banned from entering Russia at Sheremetyevo Airport when he tried to fly there by plane.
The Crimean Tatar Mejlis said on April 22 that Dzhemilev had been given a notice banning him from Russia for five years when he left Crimea for Ukraine but Russia's Federal Migration Service later denied it.
Dzhemilev criticized Crimean authorities' decision to ban him on Saturday and mockingly called Crimea an "area of Russian democracy."
"This is outrageous when some people are allowed to enter their homeland, and others are not," he said at the Russian-Ukrainian border, Ukrinform reported.
Dzhemilev also told Ukraine's Channel 5 on Saturday that Turkish authorities would assist him in regaining entry to Crimea.
Russian authorities have made some concessions to Crimean Tatars, however.
In March, Aksyonov offered Crimean Tatars the position of a deputy prime minister, two ministerial portfolios and the posts of deputy ministers. In April, President Vladimir Putin also signed a decree to rehabilitate the ethnic group, repealing Stalin's repressive policy against Crimean Tatars, while Crimean Tatar was made an official language on the peninsula.
Refat Chubarov, the current leader of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, is seen as more moderate and willing to cooperate with Russian authorities than Dzhemilev.
"It will be hard for him to work for both sides," Malashenko said. "If he cooperates with Russia, he will not be popular among Crimean Tatars."

Russians have perfected the art of disposessing, displacing, and killing minorities they deem troublesome. Tatars will not find a pleasant stay in Russia.

Flying the flags of Iran and Syria you are qualified to know that Muslims live far better in Russia vs. than in the US?

I'm sure the boys in Chechnya don't agree with you.

Seems like Tatars will have uncomfortable times under Russian rule in the future.

Russian Adm has promised about giving security to all the communities including tartars.

Russians have perfected the art of disposessing, displacing, and killing minorities they deem troublesome. Tatars will not find a pleasant stay in Russia.

Russia itself is a country of hundreds of different communities and i don't think that tartars or any other community will have any hard time anywhere in any country .

OPINION: China De Facto Recognizes Crimea as Part of Russia

MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) – China de facto recognizes Crimea as part of Russia, Director of the Institute of Political Studies of the Black Sea and Caspian Region Vladimir Zakharov told Rossiya Segodnya International News Agency on Monday.

“China understands the reality of what has happened in Crimea. If China suspected Russia in expansionist ambitions, it wouldn’t have planned to invest billions of dollars in the region,” he said, commenting on the new joint Russian-Chinese project in Crimea.

“China thus de facto recognizes that Crimea became a part of Russia voluntarily, not forcibly, what the United States and the West insist on. This is a very important geopolitical factor,” he added.

China’s plan to take part in the construction of a new Crimea transport corridor reflects its geopolitical goals in the region, the expert said.

“China understands the strategic importance of this region. [Beijing] realizes that it will yield a hundred-fold return on its investments. China does not waste money on risky projects. They conduct very serious studies of investment projects. In this case, China is making its way into a new market, Crimea, from where roads lead to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions,” Zakharov said.

Chinese companies may participate in the construction of a transportation corridor to Crimea via the Black Sea’s Kerch Strait, the Russian Kommersant newspaper reported earlier on Monday. According to the report, state contractor China Railway Construction Corporation and the private investment fund China International Fund Ltd are planning to take part in the project. Plans are expected to be finalized by the end of the month, while financial and construction models are due in July.

Last month, Russia’s United Transport Directorate said that the Kerch Strait Ferry Line, linking southern Russia’s Krasnodar region with Crimea, will cease freight services in an effort to triple the capacity for passengers. Crimean Tourism Minister Yelena Yurchenko has said the region would be ready to receive six million tourists this year.

Crimea, previously an autonomous republic within Ukraine, refused to recognize the legitimacy of the government in Kiev which seized power as a result of a coup in February, instead rejoining Russia following a referendum on the issue.

no , being a muslim qualifies me for that :)

yeah probably , since they're blowing themselves up in syria ....

give it a rest my dear friend .

.
The Republics of Tatarstan and Chechnya are all pro Russia these days. It'll take some time for Crimean Tatars.

.
Why exactly are they protesting? Are these the uneducated unemployed tartars that the Kiev junta is trying to use to destabilize Crimea?

From what I've read, the new Crimean government just gave the tartars more rights than the Kiev junta would or even the previous Ukrainians administrations did. Tartar is an official language, they have new top positions in the government. Is this why the Kiev junta sent the old tartar leader to crimea a few days ago?

I see distabalization really is their objective.

Every time nato or the Kiev junta sends " someone " there is bloodshed. Tartars should not fall into that trap. They aren't being persecuted thats BS.

1. I am in fact a Republican who has never voted for Obama.

2. You cited information about China is Russian propaganda you must have fallen for.

3. As a Republican of course I would have preferred Romney to have been our commander in chief.

Have a nice week.

Clearly you are a Russian aficionado. Russia favors Asad in Syria over the "rebels". Iran is supported by Russia who wants NATO and the West to ease up on sanctions against Iran.

Yep, you fit the mold. I don't know if Russia pays you big weekly, monthly. But you better collect your pay in dollars as the Russian ruble is down quite a bit, as is your Iranian currency (down over time abaout 43%).

That would explain why Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan are in such a mess because they are 100% hardworking people

How Azerbaijan is in a mess? Baku is much more advanced than any Russian city except for Moscow and St. Petersborg. In addition, we had such a long war with Armenia, and still our border has tensions and shootings, ... with Armenia. In over all, Azerbaijan, specially during ilham aliyev presidency, has showed a great record of success. BTW, my info about Uzbeks are limited, but still I think you are saying BS.
