Tk 440 Cr cost for Bangla as UN official language

Nothing wrong with our own spoken language Bangla or Bengali which was patronized by Muslim rulers of Bengal since 1200 AD as the language of common people, as opposed to emphasis on Sangskrit, by some previous Hindu rulers. Although I think Buddhist dynasties had similar attitudes like the later Muslim rulers about promotion of Bengali as the language of the masses.

But lately since 1947, obsession with mother tongue has been a political tool of RAWamy League in their fake Bengali Nationalism strategy among East Bengal Bengali's to break Pakistan and then they abolished English medium instruction and testing from Bangladesh. The result has been the reduction of English skills by whole generations of Bangladeshi's since 1971. So while India used English skills to bring in service related outsourcing business, Bangladesh lagged behind because of this RAWamy stupidity.

So it is not surprise that these language obsessed idiots are contemplating spending money on something that will hurt Bangladesh more than it will help us. How does making Bangla a UN official language help Bangladesh economy?

Once these RAWamy traitors are defeated, I would like to see English medium schools and testing reinstated, along with basic computer skills, so we could bring our population from isolation and give them some skills so they can market themselves in world market. Once we have sufficient English skills, I would also recommend changing official language of Courts and govt. offices to English, so it is easier for foreign investors to invest and do business in Bangladesh.

If your English logic worked then Africa would had been a superpower. Educate yourself. Thats all needed regardless Bengali or Pashtu.

There have already been here for many years.

I could not understand iajdani's post either, could iajdani himself or someone else clarify.

I have heard that a lot of private English medium schools sprung up in recent years due to market demand, but have we reinstated English as an optional medium for testing for SSC and HSC already, like it was before 1971?

Well, most English medium schools here follow the British standard where O'Level graduating students can go for IGCSE exams (used to be GCE) at the British Council located close to Dhaka University. This body is globally recognized, and students can apply for any university around the world.

Although, many students here also do A'Levels to sharpen themselves more.

And yes, with HSC they can also apply for any university willing to accept them.
Example:
University of Windsor - Undergraduate Calendar - Current - Application/Admission Information

These were pretty much true since 1971, but I am talking about medium of language for govt. run SSC and HSC exams specifically. Before 1971 there was an option to use either English or Bangla, so one could opt for English, study English text books and then take the tests using English questions and answer everything in English. This option was taken away in 1971, only Bangla was left as the language medium. I think if I am not wrong this is still true.

Also, official language for courts and govt. offices was made Bengali since 1971, whereas before 1971 it was English.

I heard from some one, that India uses local language for medium of instruction in states that have disturbance/insurgency to keep their population down, suppressed and isolated from the world, at least Kashmir has this situation, whereas most normal states have strong emphasis on English. I guess using RAW and their RAWamy League, they implemented their policy on Bangladesh as it became vassal state after 1971 and we are still following RAWamy traitors policy and have not been able to change it yet.

Well, I do not know about the exact details. Nor about the use of English in courts.

But yes, it is true that Mujib opted for Bengali as the only medium instruction back then. Some say he did it due to Indian instruction combined with his whims.

And yes, we did lag behind India when it comes to benchmarking global standards.

But things have changed through time, and even better now. But there's room for improvement.

Generally speaking - apart from the ones who graduate from English-medium schools, Bangladeshi students are still a bit weak on English for the most part, compared to Indians and Singaporeans (examples). This trend continues to this day.

Ok, let me clarify, the best way to educate a nation is through their mother tongue. I dont wanna go through the terrible situation that our kids are facing trying to learn english in very early age. Its not necessary. We should enrich Bengali and try to translate as many books and publication as possible. I am from a Bangla medium school and I think I learned English enough to go by. Except America, none of the advanced nation uses English. India is a very poor example to begin with.

PS: English medium student cant keep up with Bengali medium student when it comes to competition. Its my personal observation.

I second that. Thats how it is done. Europe's written language was Latin, only the Clergy and the Noble/elite could read and write in those days. The peasants were illiterate.

We need Bangla to be more user friendly for academics.

I agree that India is not a good example to follow. But why not have an option for English, why take away the option? Before 1971 both Bangla and English options were there, but the English option was eliminated in 1972.

Keeping mother tongue is good, I am not arguing about that (Historical Continuity of culture etc.), but taking away English option, which is the global language, which we learned as a result of 200 year colonial rule and resulting economic loss, is definitely an asset that we should have kept and not destroy in 1972, because of some idiots whims. You need to look at how much Japanese and Korean are paying for learning English and now Chinese are going through the same English learning cycle.

Also, consider Bangladesh's economic integration with other countries, FDI etc., English is a vital tool. Multilateral frameworks like ASEAN will only have English as the common 2nd language, although each have their own mother tongue as their first language.

What option you talking about? English is taught in every school as a second language. You can still use English as a medium in every terminating exam (SSC/HSC). But other than English course all lessons are provided in Bengali up to Secondary level. If you still want to learn in English you got to pay for it and have to be done with your own leisure. Nobody going to stop you. Option is there.

http://www.languageinindia.com/dec2011/bangladeshenglishpolicy.pdf

This paper has some details about language policy in Bangladesh. Mujib was driven by emotion and took many bad decisions, language policy being one of them, nationalizing factory was the other important one. 1972-1975 misrule was notorious in short Bangladesh history of 40 years. In any event, I haven't been to Bangladesh for years, so I don't know what policy they have now. Maybe someone living there with more knowledge can shed some light on this issue.

.
It was created an promoted by Moghul. Why do want a persian influenced language whereas you have original Sanskrit based Bengali. Bengali is more Indian. ;-)

You should adopt Bengali as the official central govt language instead of Hindi.
I've read in my primary Bangla grammar book that there are some thousand Farsi words in Bangla language,so i guess Bangla isn't a pure Sanskrit either:blink:
