Tipu would have enjoyed status of Shivaji if he was a Hindu: Karnad

A tweet by Union Minister of State for Skill Development Anantkumar Hegde has irked the descendants of Tipu Sultan here so much that they are mulling legal action against the minister for his comments.

The descendants said on Monday they are not only deeply pained by the minister’s tweet, but are also feeling humiliated.

“We will convene a meeting of all our family members and then take a collective decision on how to act against such unfounded comments against Tipu Sultan by an Union Minister. Hedge’s derogatory remarks are simply unacceptable. We will take legal action against him. He has not only defamed the Tiger of Mysore and a national hero, he has leveled baseless allegations and tarnished the image of Tipu Sultan,” said Bakhtiar Ali, a lawyer and one of the sixth generation descendants of Prince Mooniruddin, who was one of Tipu Sultan’s sons.

Prince Mooniruddin and Prince Golam Muhammed were two of Tipu’s sons who were deported to Kolkata by the British.

Hedge, in a tweet on October 21, had allegedly called Tipu Sultan a mass rapist, wretched fanatic and a brutal killer.

In a letter to the Karnataka government, the Union Minister had informed not to include his name on the list of invitees for the programmes scheduled on November 10 to mark Tipu Sultan Jayanti.

Another descendant of Tipu Sultan, Shahid Alam, said Hedge should tender an unconditional apology for his derogatory remarks against the 18th century ruler of Mysore.

“We are extremely shocked and hurt by his comments, This is really unfortunate. He should take a look at the writings of historians who have analysed Tipu Sultan threadbare and have concluded what a noble king he was,” Alam, a co-trustee of the Wakf estate of Prince Golam Mohammed, said.

In this viral photo that dates back to five years, the two BJP leaders can be seen wearing a headgear and posing with a sword like that of the freedom fighter who led fierce battle against the British forces and was martyred.

According to News18 report, the photo surfaced at a time when BJP is again debating against for the celebrations Tipu Sultan Jayanti.

Also, the image of the BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa from 2012, dressed as Tipu Sultan imitating the Mysore ruler’s crown and a sword has surfaced.

The Congress leaders in Karnataka said that the photo expose the saffron party and its double standard.

Tipu Sultan Jayanti – the birth anniversary of the erstwhile ruler is celebrated as a state function on November 10.

Mr. Kovind was speaking on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

At a time when the BJP is up in arms against the Karnataka Government on 'Tipu Jayanthi' celebration, President Ram Nath Kovind’s reference to Tipu Sultan in an address to the joint session of the State legislature on Wednesday came as a morale booster to the Congress government.

Speaking on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, the President said: “Tipu Sultan died a heroic death fighting the British. He was also a pioneer in development and use of Mysuru rockets in warfare. This technology was later adopted by Europeans.”

As soon as the President read this out, the entire ruling party members expressed their joy by thumping the desks, while there was pin drop silence on the Opposition side.

“More recently, two of our finest army chiefs – Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa and General K.S. Thimayya – were sons of Karnataka,” he pointed out.

Continuing, the President said: “Karnataka is a land of formidable soldiers. Krishnadeva Raya was the greatest ruler of the Vijayanagara empire and remains an inspiration for all Indians. Kempe Gowda was the founder of Bengaluru. Rani Chennamma of Kittur and Rani Abbakka led among the earliest battles against colonial powers.”`

CM's praise tweet
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a tweet, congratulated Mr. Kovind. “Congratulations to Hon. President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind for a statesman like address to the Karnataka legislature,” the tweet said.

Tipu Sultan

A freedom fighter or a tyrant? Noted historians believe he was neither.

But many of them do agree that the 18th-century Mysore ruler stands in history as a symbol of resistance to British colonial expansion.

A raging debate on Tipu Sultan's legacy has sparked a war of words between the ruling Congress and the Opposition BJP in Karnataka.

The saffron party has opposed the Congress government's plans for 'Tipu Jayanti' celebrations on his birth anniversary on November 10.

While a section of the BJP sees him as a "religious bigot" and a "brutal killer", some Congress leaders have hailed him as a freedom fighter.

Eminent historian Irfan Habib said that it would be "unfair" to dub Tipu Sultan a tyrant and said he was "certainly a very important figure in the Indian resistance to Britain".

However, he felt the term freedom fighter was not applicable to him because Tipu did not revolt against anyone but was defending his kingdom and resisting colonialism.

"If Indians want to celebrate the anti-colonial struggle then they must celebrate Tipu Sultan," said Habib, who has edited two books on the ruler - 'State and Diplomacy Under Tipu Sultan: Documents and Essays' and 'Confronting Colonialism: Resistance and Modernisation Under Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan'.

On Tipu being called a "mass rapist" and a "brutal killer", he said, "That kind of attack on his character was not even made by the British".

Lauding Tipu Sultan's contribution, the Professor (Emeritus) of the Aligarh Muslim University said the erstwhile ruler of Mysore not only fought the British but also inflicted "one of the greatest disasters" on the British armed forces as a general.

He also hailed Tipu for the "remarkable achievements" of building a modern army, manufacturing modern weapons and giving economic development priority among other forward-looking measures.

Asked if he persecuted minorities such as Hindus and Christians, Habib said, "It is true that in suppressing two rebellions in Coorg and in Malabar, when he took prisoners, he converted them to Islam rather than killing them".

However, he pointed out, it must also be remembered that Tipu Sultan made grants to Hindu temples and had a Hindu prime minister, Purnaiah.

'Context is important'

Rohit Wanchoo, the head of the history department at Delhi's St Stephen's College, and Tasneem Suhrawardy, an associate professor of history at the college, described Tipu as an important figure in the resistance to British expansion in south India.

There was no doubt that he played an important role in resisting the rise of British power, Wanchoo said.

"Why he fought, how he fought...what did he hope to achieve are larger and different questions," he said.

Suhrawardy also opined that there was a "whole attempt of looking at history from a certain kind of perspective which is not historical. Everything is being looked at from a communal perspective".

Nonica Datta, an associate professor at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, said Tipu was "an inveterate foe" of the British.

He enlisted French support against the British, and his fighting spirit was such that Arthur Wellesley himself fought against him, she said.

However, Datta argued that Tipu Sultan was not a nationalist hero of his times, nor was he a tyrant.

"The images are constructed respectively by secular and Hindutva nationalisms," she said, adding that 21st-century concerns could not be employed to understand a ruler and his times in 18th century south India.

"We need to rescue Tipu from nationalist imaginations and ideologies and understand him as a fine warrior and an astute ruler of his times," Datta added.

Sandhya Sharma, an associate professor of history at Vivekananda College here, also believed Tipu Sultan had to be studied in the context of the period he lived in and contemporary ideas must not be applied to his actions.

Last week, President Ram Nath Kovind had hailed Tipu Sultan, saying he died a heroic death fighting the British.

Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore, who was considered an implacable enemy of the British East India Company. He was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort at Srirangapatna against the British forces.

Tipu Sultan developed the rockets that held the British at bay for a while.

After Tipu's deposement, the British stole this technology (missiles) and used in the Napoleonic wars of 1812 and the 1814 Battle of Baltimore in the States.

The Karnataka High Court on Friday sought to know whether the expenditure to be incurred on “Tipu Jayanti” celebrations to be held across the state on November 10 had the “authority” of the state budget.

The query by a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice H G Ramesh and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar came during the hearing on admissibility of a PIL seeking to restrain the government from going ahead with the “Tipu Jayanti” celebrations.

The court adjourned the hearing for Saturday after the petitioner sought time to furnish documents to show whether expenditure incurred to celebrate the event has the authority of budget.

The petitioner Manjunath KP had sought directions to restrain the celebrations in his home district of Kodagu saying it would foment communal disharmony. He contended that large scale communal violence erupted during the Tipu Jayanti celebrations in 2015, when it was first organised by the state government.

Manjunath made submissions pertaining to several historical material facts contending that Tipu Sultan had killed thousands of Kodavas (in Kodagu district) during his rule.

He also submitted that Tipu’s rule in Kodagu resulted in conversion of Kodavas to Islam. Tipu was an invader and a dictator and glorifying such a person is a matter of shame, he contended. Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore.

He was considered an enemy of the British East India Company.

Tipu was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British forces. Opposition BJP and some outfits are opposed to Tipu Jayanti celebrations and have called him “religious bigot”, “fanatic” and “anti-Kannada”.

Tipu is viewed in a negative light in Kodagu district of the state, where he was alleged to have persecuted the local Kodava population, as also the Roman Catholics of Mangaluru, on religious grounds and forced conversion to Islam.

LOL. Utter Rubbish.

His Grand Father Fath Muhammed served as the commander of the Rocket regiment for the Nawab of Arcot. His father Hyder Ali, took over the family business after Fath muhammed died in battle. All Tipu did was replace the bamboo and composite rockets with metal. Everything else remained the same.

The Prince of Arcot is considered the "First nobleman in the Muslim community of South India". He heads various religious endowments, charitable organisations and educational trusts. The Arcots manage the wakf in the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, and have developed infrastructural facilities for pilgrims to visit the holy places. "We maintain eight mosques in Tamil Nadu. Many of those who work in our trusts are Hindus," he points out.

The dynasty has had numerous enlightened rulers. Like the house of Tanjore, the Arcot family has integrated perfectly into the Tamil country. Respect for other faiths has been translated into action as can be seen by their contributions to the temples of Srirangam, Tirupati, Tiruvarur, Tirunelveli and Madras.

The enforcement of the Doctrine of Lapse by the British had resulted in their privy purses being abolished in 1855. The splendid Chepauk palace — spread over 121 acres and perhaps the first specimen of Indo-Saracenic architecture in the country — which was the residence of the rulers was taken over by the British. Now the Senate House and other government offices function from the premises.

So ? Do you have a point ?

LOL. Rewriting history is what you were pathetically attempting to do. I just bitch slapped you into reality.

. .
Point is always infront of us. Indian and Arab nations are connected to each other since centuries.

All Humans are connected to each other. We are also connected to monkeys. Hindus believe all lives as connected.

Non of that is relevant here.

Tipu sultan was not of arab descent by any stretch of the imagination. In fact when his father attempted to get him married to muslim royalty, NON of the muslim aristocracy agreed to give a women from this family to him. Hyder ali begged the Nizam of Hyderabad to give him one of his many daughters, but the Nizam rejected him and called him a low born neo convert.

Hyder ali finally had to marry Tipu sultan to the daughter of an Imam who was his friend in Arcot. His second wife was also the daughter of one of his generals, Lala Mian. Nobody recognized him as a legitimate ruler, not even his own ummah.

In fact, Tipu sultan was not even a King. The official ruler of Mysore was Wadyar and Tipu could not overthrow him due to popular sentiment against him. So he, like his father , kept the real ruler of Mysore under guard in the royal palace.

Tipu title was supreme general of Mysore. That is why the British refused to accept him as the king and after he was killed, the Wadyar continued his rule of Mysore.

So in reality this is much ado about nothing. A glorified general who imprisoned his king and managed to rule only for 16 years , that too by pledging is own children as collateral to the british. A truly contemptible character, masquerading as your "hero". Truly pathetic.

.
If tipoo was a hindu then he woudknt be killing hindus, raping women and children and converting hindus lmao...

.
This is what happens when lower class shudras, chandalas and mlecchas are allowed to get a pseudo-pathetic half-@ss education and can afford to use the Internet.

Enjoy!

I assure you, I THOROUGHLY enjoyed bitch slapping you into reality

So thank you for that expected pleasure.

I find your desperate Name calling very revealing (shudras, chandalas and mlecchas :cheesy:) It shows your inability to face reality and handle the truth. I enjoyed that even more. :enjoy:

Imagine if a half-@ss education can bitch slap you and make your so frustrated, what will a full-@ss education do to your fantasy filled world ? The future must be terrifying for you and your kind.
