Time to side with India to cut off ISI: US Senator

WASHINGTON: Contending that US relationship with Pakistan had reached a dead end, an American lawmaker has said there was a sense among Congressmen that time had come to "side" with India to "cut off the ISI".

Senator Mark Kirk said at a discussion forum by prestigious Washington-based think tank, Foreign Policy Initiative, that a US-India tie-up was ISI's "horror story" but time had come for it to evolve.

"You know, Yogi Bear said when you reach a fork in the road, take it. I think we hit the fork in the road in August and September between the United States and Pakistan. We saw a large truck bomb assembled, lit off next to a US base, 77 US casualties," Kirk said.

In recent times US' ties with Pakistan, a key ally in the region, have plunged to an all-time low following a series of incidents over the year, including the killing of two people by a CIA contractor, the Abbottabad raid, and finally the NATO airstrike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

"My sense of the Senate and probably the House is we're ready to take that fork in the road. We're ready to side with India, to cut off the ISI," the Illinois Senator said.

"It appears to me the Pakistani horror story of us siding with India should now evolve. Pakistan has decided we're leaving. Pakistan has decided that they can cripple the civilian government," he said.

The United States, he said, needs a stable party in the region who has a status quo pro-civilian anti-terror interest, which is India.

"And in many ways, this is the ISI horror story, but I would say they picked this, and we should now arrange that fate for them," he said in response to a question.

Kirk urged General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to play what he called "hard ball" with Pakistan.

"Get in with the Indian Intelligence Service, the Indian Chief of Staff, bring Indian, not just economic but military assistance on line, and build some long relationships so that in the mid-presidential term next time, the 2014 time frame, you have a steady partner with new money coming on the table that can send an important signal to Afghanistan," Kirk said.

Appearing on the same discussion forum, Congressman Adam Kinzinger, noted that in many cases, actors react more favourably when you are willing to use the stick as a way to get your will done.

"I think as a nation, we have to begin exploring more of those options. How to be a little more difficult, how to be a little harder, how to hold the Pakistanis a little more accountable," he said.

The USA wants to use India as a counter to Pakistan and China.

It was obvious from the beginning.

US relations have have always been a dead end for pakistan! They've fucked us over big time... only beneficial to corrupt politicians! It's about TIME pakistan becomes a dead end for the US and takes its own interests seriously for a change!

No no .... NO.
Its not the US who has trodden all over Pakistan. It is Pakistan who have always gone to the negotiating table with a gun pointed at its own head, demanding give us this or give us that, in the irrational fear of an (non)imminent attack by their arch rivals - the Indians!!! The world has grown weary of this attitude, this irrationality. Promoting religious fundamentalism, encouraging segregation of society on sectarian basis, messing and interfering in other countries' internal affairs, peddling nuclear knowhow to pariah states like NK didnt help either. And now, the US is about to call your bluff - go ahead, pull that trigger.

Don't blame others for ones own incompetence.

.
We need not worry about the Yanks - we need to follow our national interest. The Company is vital to Pakistani national interests.

.
How pathetic is the US if it has to "side " with another country to hurt ISI. I guess the Senator realizes US is no longer the sole Superpower and has to lean on Indian CRUTCH.

The USA wants to use India as a counter to Pakistan and China.

It was obvious from the beginning.

Just because the USA wants to warm up to India to service their purposes does not mean India will hop into bed with America. We have our own foreign policy to follow and will not need American assistance to contain the ISI or PA. We have been doing so for 60 odd years or so, and will continue to handle their irritation ourselves. We will not let the USA use India as a Pawn (the case with Pakistan) in the international arena or to setup a base in India itself, at least not until the SH IT hits the fan. Good to know there are options available but considering regional stability India will stay neutral and assess the risks as they come. Why should India interfere in the spat between American and Pakistan, it’s better to take advantage of situation by leaving them 2 alone! Pakistan is doing all the damage itself, this is but a start to the isolation considering the way things are going and if (GOD forbid) American plans to attack Pakistan they can do it themselves. :coffee:

. .
The major set back was when americans found Osma residing in Abbottabad and then NATO bombing on Pakistani soldiers. I don't know what is going in your intel. services and military but as an outsiders it looks like there are some people who have sympathy for Taliban in your intel. service and military and that pissed US.

.
hopefully cooler heads will prevail, but if USA is dumb enough to attack Pakistan -- and India wants to sit it out -- USA will do false flag in India (around Indian election time) to drum up support. It is how they do things in USA, they would do it in/to India as well without thinking twice. Best situation is for USA to leave, and let Pakistan heal itself, and let India stay out of international big stage.

the ISI always has and always will be a thorn in the side of those that opt to move against our national interests......go ask the hindustanys, they will attest to that.

God bless the men and women who keep our country safe(er) in this hostile, God-forsaken neighbourhood.

This is one rare time that I have to agree with you. Be it for the Americans or the Indians, the ISI's support for terror camps both in the heart of PAK and in Afg will always be a thorn.

Funny that you mention this, considering that Pakistan's ISI is a major contributor for the present state of affairs!!
