I have refrained from posting in this thread as I wanted to read what other Hon members thought. Here is what I think.
Historically India has always been a great country. It was a great power during Asoka, Guptas who colonised Thailand/Malaysian penisula. During Kanishka and lastly during Akbar's reign when most of Afghanistan was ruled from by an Indian king. Thus India/sub contninent has always had a potential of achieving greatnes.
No doubt that India's stature has been steadily growing in the world. Take-off started during the opening up of India by Narisma Rao and with the growth in IT; and with $100-billion in Forex reserves, India is on the verge becoming an economic powerhouse.
Nuclear deal is much touted but if you scrutinize it closely, it wont make much difference to Indian status. Energy is the most important ingredient for continued growth; nuclear deal will help ease India's power shortage and thus accelerate the economic growth. India went nuclear in 1974. I knew of Indian rockets and space programs while still a student in 60's. India has had experience in aeronautics and missles/rocket technolgy for a few years; thanks to brilliant men such as Abul Kalam. So how this deal will enhance India's military capability?? All it has done is the recognition by US of India's potential whether Pakistan likes it or not.
I have a limited knowldge and intellect, but even I am astonished that while on one hand, half of Pakistan population is strongly anti US, about 10% ( guess) hates US to an extent that they bomb and even burn US Embassy, TV commentators, press and politicians dont tire of blaming US for every evil in the world;at the same time we expect US to help us in nuclear technology!! Current US Aid is not because US loves Pakistan, but because US needs Pakistan. Any one who doesnot understand this reality is naive in the extreme.
A super power by definition implies that if rest of the world excluding super power/powers is one side and a single super power on the other side, super power will prevail. On this basis India will not be a super power in forseable future.
Regional power: A country which has the potential of beating all other regional countries in a conflict. India already qualifies. India would suffer great damage no doubt, but would eventaully win. ( I dont include China in this region)
World Power: IMO world power means a country which could exert political influence on distant lands and has ability to use force if necessary. India, thru her expanding Navy and setting up Air bases abroad is defintely trying, whether she will succeed or not is hard to tell.
Another important aspect for world power is exploitation of her economic strength to make other countries do her bidding. US, USSR, China, Japan and to some extent UK have been doing it for quite a while. If a country goes off line, you simply switch off economic/ military aid. If it doesnt help, you ask others to do so ( Sanctions).
It is called neo-coloniasm, but it works. India is way behind in this. Indian economy has no doubt taken off. Indian pyche is however not quite free of its colonial past. If India wants Security Council seat; all she has to do is to agree to hold an internationally monitored refrendom in Kashmir. Does any one really think that majority of sane Kashmiri muslims would like to live with a talibanized Pakistan???. But India wont agree to it. Even if the worst happens, is it the end of the world??. In simple words India lacks magnanimity, one of the essentials of a world power.
India definitely has the potential to be a world power but she is long way off. Firstly India has to start economic aid in a big way. Look at Japan, despite having US bases on its soil, Japan invested heavily in the Eastern Soviet Union. For example, India can start with sunbcontracting part of its growing IT business to Pakistan and Bangla Desh. Do you think that If Pakistan was earning $4 to 5 - billion per year from Indian IT hand out, she will refuse handing over Dawood Ibrahim to India, knowing that to decline the request would cost a lot of hard cash and jobs.
This doesnt mean that as a Pakistani I would like Indian hegemony. But I dont see India even trying it. India tried intimidation ( massing forces along the border) but failed. If the stick doesnt work, why not try the carrot?? Besides. my post is with reference to India and I am not suggesting that India should do it or that Pakistan should accept the carrot.
Based on the above IMO opinion it is too early to decide whether India would be a future world power or not.
