Time for a TAP-LNG Pipeline

By local resources I mean, the actual preparation of the terrain. Leveling and cutting paths through the terrain, like the Chinese labor that helped build the transcontinental railway in the US 150 years ago.

Companies with experience of build rail in mountains should lead on the actual laying of track. Btw, this project may also be a good time for Pakistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan to consider switching to standard gauge track down the line. Chinese use standard rail gauge, so stands gauge rail all the way to Karachi and then across to Gwadar and standard gauge rail in Iran and Turkey and Europe will help transit trade between China and Europe.
No, I would use the soviet gauge. If a soviet gauge track reaches Samarkand from Peshawar.....it would be connected to the existing soviet rail system. Pakistan could get resources from all over CIS.....Lumber, grain, coal, oil gas....etc. Pakistan could export all over CIS as well, textile garments, citrus, banana, mango....etc.

When labor is cheaper and money needs to be kept within the country, using local resources is a viable option. Modernizing the railroad a few years down the line can be done when it’s up and running but right now they need a basic single track. Think of it like Afghanistan’s version of the Burma road.

The diplomat has on article on this rail route, so it’s not only in Afghanistan and Pakistan’s interest but the interest of central Asian countries that don’t want to be dependent on their three large neighbors. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if Germany foots the Bill for an under the table deal with the Afghans. The Europeans also don’t want to be dependent on the US or OPEC. So they could be the wildcard investors.

They do have an interest in limiting refugees from the region, so an economically stable Central Asia, Afghanistan and Pakistan is in their interest and the interest of their business community.

This article states the exact problem I'm pointing out and have the solution for. Turkmen gas reserves are huge and largely stranded. Iran and Russia oppose any pipelines to the west.....since this would challenge their gas exports. TAPI went nowhere (with the old American/Indian lackey regime in Kabul) since Turkmen gas could challenge USA shale gas exports. Plus India did not want gas pipelines that transit through Pakistan. Also the European members of NATO had no real independent energy strategy and were happy to be dependent on Russian energy.

With the new regime in Kabul....a TAP-LNG project solves all these issues to get Turkmen gas to global markets.

According to this author......no one in Ashgabat even talks about the "trans-Caspian gas pipeline". However a trans Afghanistan route is constantly discussed in Ashgabat . Taliban are committed to it (they need revenue sources) even pledging 30k troops for security. Pakistan is certainly on board due to its own energy needs plus re-export of CIS gas would generate forex for it. According to the article, Turkmenistan's national gas company Turkmengaz is currently buying “necessary pipe products of various types” from Russia’s TMK "in earnest". TMK is a leading global pipe maker has not been black listed by international sanctions.

Before the laying of rail track, we can remove the customs duties within Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) countries and start trade via combination of existing road and rail networks. US has made the road network in Afghanistan which can be utilized. Currently, 2/300 truck of tomatoes and onions are coming from Afghanistan to Pakistan duty free as the flood has damaged Pakistani crop.

I saw a program on tv in which the rail carriages were lifted by crane and put on a separate set of wheels on a track of different gauge. I think it was between China and Central Asia.

If the central Asians are financing it, then the rail gauge they like should be fine with us.

Its a good idea but the World has moved on to renewable resources now.
And then the world saw how dependable renewables are with the start of the Ukraine war and moved back to coal fire plants in Germany.

Let the region catch up with the rest of the world and then we can talk about renewables.

That’s fine. If the local government is fine with it, and they can build it, it should be fine.

Also, if the pipeline forks at Quetta and goes to both Karachi and Gwadar, it could be the basis for Gwadar getting steady international business. It would also make it more likely a Gwadar-Dalbaddin rail route could be built and the Quetta line extended to Turkmenistan as part of BRI (with traffic floating across the Caspian to Azerbaijan and then Europe); “The Turkish Corridor”

Down the line, the corridor along with the trans-Afghan railway from Uzbekistan to Peshawar could be linked; Kabul-Kandahar to help maximize mining.

Finally a Gwadar-Karachi rail line would make the entire Makran coast the ideal location for SEZs and forming a way to bypass Iran and Russia, and avoid international issues. We have to keep in mind Iran is a competitor to Pakistan, as well as partner of India. Pakistan could get financing from the GCC for projects that provide an alternative to countries having to use Iran.

Lifting carriages and changing the wheels is a time consuming process. Better to have a change of gauge rail yard and move containers off one car and on to another, with the tracks of different gauges side by side.

If this can be done, it would be the next best thing to switching to the same track gauge.

There is a facility like this on the Kazakh-Chinese border that should be the model for such a rail yard in Peshawar.

Duties can be worked out, especially if freight volume can be increased. We have to keep in mind, these are the kind of rail links that could even see Russian goods re-exported via the central Asian countries and vis a versa, so the rails should be built for a high volume of trade and the duties worked out so the financial burden of transition from truck freight to rail freight is not overly on the Afghans; otherwise the local people won’t support it.

They have a trans-Cacausus pipeline for Azeri oil. You add one more trans-Caspian pipeline. That area is less volatile than Afghanistan

Pakistan is on-board. Why wouldn't they ? It is not like they are investing a dime. Are you willing to cut your other budgetary allocations to provide $10 billion for this project ? The conversation becomes interesting at that point.

A Trans-Caspian pipeline has zero chance currently. Russia and Iran both oppose it. The T-A-P path is the only viable option to release stranded Turkmen gas to global markets. Afghanistan is safer then NordStream and other pipelines in Europe. :lol:

Right now.....Afghanistan is safer then Western Europe by a wide margin.

Russia is all in for Eurasian integration.

Iran has no say in a TAP gas pipeline.

Global inflation problem can only be solved by increasing energy production.....existing stranded energy resources must be brought into the global energy markets. Turkmenistan has the worlds 6th largest natural gas reserves but is not a major participant in global energy markets since its energy resources are stranded with no real access to global markets through ocean ports. TAPI isn't going anywhere, IMO....India has no interest in it. Turkmenistan needs to sit down with Pakistan and Afghanistan on an alternative.....TAP-LNG. Instead of terminating in India, the pipeline would terminate at LNG terminals in Pakistan for global export.

Any thoughts?
Why waste time when the pipeline with Iran is ready? Russia is happy to provide us with gas and Oil too.

Closest connection point to Pakistan from the existing soviet gas system is in Turkmenistan. T-A-P LNG could also move Russian gas to Asian and African markets.

Iran pipeline is still under construction last I read. Not sure when it would be finished.
