MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Thousands of people on Sunday took to the streets in the Montreal city in Canada's Quebec province to protest the government's proposed secularism bill, banning civil servants from wearing religious symbols on the job, local media reported.

Journal du Montreal newspaper reported that Islamic hijab, Christian cross, and Sikh dastaar fell under the ban.

The newspaper noted that thousands of people, primarily representatives of the Muslim community and various religious minorities took part in the march.

you do realise that when you make statements like that willy nilly that doesn't mean that other countries get the right to do what they want?

I have sat down and had full discussions with people who make that statement. The only motivation behind that statement is that once you say that, you feel like you have a license to do what you want in your own country.

And that is simply wrong.

btw this debate is about freedom of the individual vs. power of the state (i.e. not a religious freedom debate)

In the Canadain constitution it states in clear words, FREEDOM TO PRACTICE ANY RELIGION. And things like freedom to belong to any culture and or practice it. Therefore this is their rule and Quebec is breaking it.

there must be a provision in their constitution that allows provinces/states greater autonomy, which then legitimizes Quebec's move.
