The country was divided in the first place because the extreme right wing Hindutvawadis who were not ready to tolerate Muslims in India. Please have a look below, this is a statement by one of their prominent leader who praised Nazi Germany and wowed to emulate the ethnic purging policies of Nazi Germany in India. Please note that these statements were made while India was still governed by the British. Muslims were naturally scared to death and thought if the extreme right wing Hindutvawadis had these ideas while British were still in India, what they would do to the Muslims when Brisitsh would leave? It was this fear that forced Muslims to go for a separate homeland. In-fact Mr. Jinnah had delayed the division of British India until the end but it was Nehru and Congress that refused the proposals of the 1947 Cabinet Mission and sealed the fate of a United India.Well I've seen a lot of Indians saying the Two-nation theory is invalid, but does that mean they think the Partition was wrong? Since the Partition was based on the Two-nation theory?
Now see how the Hindutvawadi leader Mr. Golwalkar praising the ethnic cleansing of minorities in Germany and vowing to do the same in India:
Mr. Golwalkar put it unequivocally, “the foreign elements in Hindusthan” had but “two courses” of action open to them, entertaining “no idea but those of the glorification of the Hindu race and culture, i.e., of the Hindu nation and must lose their separate existence to merge in the Hindu race,” or they were to live “wholly subordinated to the Hindu nation, claiming nothing, deserving no privileges, far less any preferential treatment not even citizen’s rights.” In all this, Golwalkar held up Germany as a country that might usefully be emulated by India: “Germany has also shown how impossible it is for races and cultures, having differences going to the root, to be assimilated into one united whole, a good lesson for us in Hindusthan to learn and profit by.”
So essentially Mr. Golwalkar (and the Hindutva fascists) is suggesting that all the minorities in India must be eliminated and their cultures eradicated, like Nazi did to the minorities in Germany. What options Muslims were left with other than demanding for a separate homeland?
