No they dont and thats the problem..alot of people take it seriously and thats what makes persian angry..
you are wrong on so many levels, it's beyond belief.
First of all, there were 300 spartans. Second they were not alone. They had the support of perhaps about 3-4000 other troops.
third, they did not fight in the open, because it is called tactics. They were there to achieve a military goal and the goal was achieved. that is how wars are won.
the 300 spartans were the ones who defended the narrows. The slaughter was legendary because quite simply there were no better warriors with tactics + armament in the world.
There is a tip of a greek spear, roughly 2400 years old in the NY museum. you can take it an sharpen it, stick it on a pole an use it today!!!!! That is a know how, we today, do not possess.
ancient Greek historians claim persians were a million, some modern ones say between 200.000 and 500.000, the difference is
mind boggling !!!
and by the way... even when the Greeks fought the persians in the open, in all accounts, the persians were defeated.
Marathon (were only 192 greeks died for almost 7000 persians), Plataea, Salamis and artemisium.. not to mention Alexander the Great.
in all battles, Greeks were outnumbered heavily and in all they decisively won.
And you are angry about a movie based on a comic book???? what are you 10?
Oh... and for other refs, about the Greek soldier, a soldier who has fought in ALL major engagements in European hist and in korea.
Hitler only mentioned the enemy soldier once:
"For the sake of historical truth I must verify that only the Greeks, of all the adversaries who confronted us, fought with bold courage and highest disregard of death."
Adolf Hitler : speech before the Reichstag, 4 May 1941
The italian defeat in the winter of 1940 in Albania, is quite known... by an army about 10 times less in numbers.
The Germans were sieging a fortress for 6 days, with an entire armoured division, the fortress' garrison when Greece surrendered was found to be 13 men.
The Greeks were the only army allowed by the germans to withdraw back to their homes under full honours and in some cases with their guns. What did the army do? move to Crete and Egypt and carry on fighting !!
in korea, about 800 men, faced a force of 3000 chinese soldiers and won the battle. There was not single man in that fight that was not injured or dead.
furthermore:
"
The 13th Flight received a U.S. Presidential Unit Citation for its participation in the evacuation of US Marines at Hagaru-ri in December 1950.[2] The GEF battalion received its first U.S. Presidential Unit Citation in February 1952 for the capture of Scotch Hill.
The Greek infantry company involved in the defense of Outpost Harry received the following Presidential Unit Citation:
"DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY Washington D. C., 10 March 1955 GENERAL ORDERS 18
DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION Company P Greek Expeditionary Forces Battalion (Second Award) is cited for extraordinary heroism and outstanding performance of duty in action against an armed enemy in the vicinity of Surang-Ni, Korea during the period 17 June to 18 June 1953. Assigned the defense of a vital outpost position (Harry), the company encountered a major enemy assault on the evening of June 17. After an intense concentration of enemy Mortar and artillery fire, the hostile forces, which had taken up an attack position on the northeast and northwest side of the outpost, moved rapidly through their own and friendly artillery fire to gain a foothold on the northern slope of the position. Refusing to withdraw, Company P closed in and met the attackers in a furious hand to hand struggle in which many of the enemy were driven off. The aggressors regrouped, quickly attacked a second time, and again gained the friendly trenches. Immediately, the Greek Forces launched a series of counterattacks, simultaneously dispatching a diversionary force to the east of the outpost which successfully channeled the enemy thrusts. After 2 hours of close in fighting, the aggressors were again routed and the friendly positions restored. The outstanding conduct and exemplary courage exhibited by members of Company P, Greek Expeditionary Forces Battalion, reflects great credit on themselves and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and the Kingdom of Greece."
Individual Greeks received 6 U.S. Distinguished Service Crosses, 32 Silver Stars, 110 Bronze Stars. 19 members of 13th Flight received the U.S. Air Force Air Medal for the Hagaru-ri evacuation operation in December 1950. The Greek battalion's war flag also received the highest Greek military decoration, the Commander's Cross of the Cross of Valour, in 1954."
so you better watch it when you speak about the Greek soldier, a soldier with about 4000 years of history on his shoulders and banners.. No other european nation can claim such long heritage in fighting ... if there is a reason Greece is bankrupt is also because we fought in All wars... ALL !!! we rebuilt this god forsaken place so many times that you cannot comprehend .. so spare us ...
