Well what part that he said is not true? I was reading about the COAS statement that army values the other institutions but demands dignity in return. Some wise man once said that dignity and respect is not demanded, but earned. Was ISPR willfully quiet
1)-When Musharraf's legal team was associating Musharraf with the army again and again
2)-When ex-servicemen turned analysts were openly trying to associate Musharraf's trial with that of Army on media talk shows as if they were the official representatives of Pakistan military.
3)-When army officials are pushing the government for a face-off against the SCP in missing person's case.
Now would this suit me to call others not to question my accountability when I myself can't hold myself accountable.
1)-What happened to Abbotabad Report? Who refused to appear before the judicial commision investigating the matter.
2)-How many heads were rolled post GHQ,Faisal and Kamra attack.
Army has locked its horns against all the other pillars of the state and I think it is because diversity of opinion is superseded by the chain of command resulting in an evolution of institutionalized thought (though wrong it may be -as we saw with Yahya,Zia and Musharraf in Kargil). Though Gen Kayani's efforts in insulating the institution from the rest of the pillars are indeed commendable, but the change of institutional mindset will take lot more time than one would expect (even decades given army decides not to venture again for the political power). Its quite ironic that when Army's role is called for by any pillar of state, it considers itself as an element of government but when it comes to certain matters, it becomes a pillar itself. Something which has to stop.

Well what part that he said is not true?

first I commend you for a good post (specially reference to attacks on our bases I share your views) you should be our defence minster instead of that cretin who was ranting in the assembly
:yahoo:
now to your opening question.

for a start, he retorts that Pak army refused to take part in 48 war and it was only waziris that liberated Kashmir.
for a start it was the British COAS that refused not the army men and the officers who on their own occord joined the fight and for record people like raja aziz bhatti were not Waziris.

it was Punjab and baloch regiment that put its life on the line without adequate equipment during the partition providing protection to the immigrants where ever it could while tens of thousands were slaughtered at the hands of Hindu and Sikh mobs but still hundreds of thousands were saved when Hindu and sikh looters would flee on the news that Baloch regiment was in the area

that Indian spokesman missed that bit. fast forward did democracy free the Swat? they were in Bunair and talking about making Isalamabad their new khuni chouk? who liberated it?

respect is not given but earned?

nice fancy talk my dear but its down right stupid and doesnt apply in the real world. there are two things in the law and religion that take care of careless and loose tongues

they are called defamation and contempt and blasphemy. (take your pick for the choice of your insult and target)

your freedom ends where my nose begins..

no one has a free reign to talk out of his arse and make an arse of himself in the end.

you mentioned the Abbotabad report and our military leader's reluctance to appear in it and I commend you for that but you failed to mention why the report was "leaked" (read sold to Al Jazira) even before its publication? so the answer to your question what happened to the report? it was sold to the highest bidder by the democracy (no I didnt mention memogate)

Right to train militants and discard them later and when they hit back.....oops..... i think you missed that one.....
oops I did miss that indeed

pray tell, when and where did we train Mullah Fazullah, Baith Ullah Mehsood, Muslim Khan? Hakim ullah Mehsood?
Baramdagh bughti ?

oops ... I dont see anywhere they would have fought for us or were trained by us?

come again?

who was caught hsting TTP leadership not once but twice?

the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. caught by whom? the Americans...

Ooops

Ooops indeed ooops yourself

I expected better language out of you Sir.

Anyway, the Minister is entitled to voice his opinions, regardless of what you might think of them.

same way, we all pakistanis are entitled to voice our oppinions, regurdless of what he, you or stupid media could think?

hence the wink :)

I just commented in the same language these Nawaz goons are used to
I didnt mean to patronize you ... please forgive me..

Our discussion should aspire to higher standards surely! :D

While I am certain that Khawaja Sahib could have used better words to be more diplomatic, his words bring to my mind two things.

1. As Defence Minister, he should have been the person to liaise about the Defence Budget between the GHQ and the Cabinet. Why was he bypassed by summoning the Finance Minister to the GHQ? That could explain part of his vitriol at an imagined personal slight.

2. He does make a good point about defence spending being large and at cost of social development. Given the bad and deteriorating security situation of the country, the people are entitled to question whether the Armed Forces have provided good value for the money spent on them. I am sure the answer is yes, but it needs to be explained rather that taking any offence at being asked this important question.

good sir

the chief didnt say he is offended
all he said was that unfair criticism must be avoided and armymen deserve the same respect that is expected of them by our other sate pillars.

this defence minster who is supposed to be the civilian spokesman of the military is acting on behalf of Indians it seems..
his government is unilaterally freeing the repeat murderers even bypassing the courts (no one bats the eye over this). Taliban are declared angry brothers and army briefings to these politicians are leaked to the taliban what can be more shocking and bigger treason than that?

He has the right, speaking of traitors here is an interesting interview of Ayub Khan (angry at Fatimah Jinnah):

"They call her the Mother of the Nation," sniffed Pakistan's President Mohammed Ayub Khan. "Then she should at least behave like a mother."

Who wrote this script? by the way Ayub Khan is on record having stated that Fatimah Jinnah was an Indian agent (wonder what that makes Jinnah then?)

But that is exactly the point: The COAS cannot and should not prevent criticism by a legally superior office. What he should not do is comes across as arrogant and above reproach. He should play it smart: Say that the Army welcomes the criticism, and then provide in detail evidence that shows that it is doing a good job under difficult circumstances (and there is plenty of evidence to show that).

What the Army should NOT do, as you are too, is to equate the criticism as a licence to doubt the patriotism of a serving cabinet minister. The Minister is as patriotic as you or I or the COAS. He does have a different and critical opinion that needs to be considered and explained. To call him an agent of India insults the nation, its government and the people, all for no good reason, because a free expression of opinion is the heart of progress.

After all, the Army does not have a monopoly on what defines patriotism. It should learn to incorporate differences of opinion and play it smarter, not defensively and arrogantly like this, for this will serve no one well.

He is not defence minister cause Mr Shareef found him competent enough for the slot instead he was made to avoid Mr Shareef's attendance before the court. The only problem with him is that his government doesn't give him his expected importance neither in MoD nor in water and power where Mr Abid is rolling balls. If Finance Minister was summoned in GHQ with out his approval, he should have raised issue in cabinet and would have ensured GHQ receives a good shut up call.
