The Rafale hidden beauties and its future

Inner features of Spectra, that bit is classified, but Picdel has mentioned some stuff about it using alternate technologies. Basically, Spectra uses a superheterodyne receiver like a regular system, and lots and lots of correlators, similar to GPS. A Kalman filter is used for prediction, so it keeps the system within a particular bandwidth in relation to the signal that is being canceled. What really makes the difference is software, because the hardware itself isn't particularly revolutionary
“One of our programs at DARPA is taking a whole new approach to this problem, this is an effort we refer to as cognitive electronic warfare,” said DARPA director, Dr Arati Prabhakar. “We’re using artificial intelligence to learn in real-time what the adversaries’ radar is doing and then on-the-fly create a new jamming profile. That whole process of sensing, learning and adapting is going on continually.”

So this is what Spectra is basically doing.

The Russians have also deployed a similar system on the Richag-AV. But it does area jamming, meaning it jams the entire spectrum, anything that it doesn't recognize as what the Russian military uses, and it's all real time. This is also a digital GaN based system, similar to the upcoming Spectra upgrade.

OMG this cognitive EW is something which was meant for the F35 and its already in Rafale
And is the Russian GaN based more effective than the current SPECTRA ? And has it been fielded on any platform yet?

This cognitive EW is a next gen upgrade, not meant to go on the F-35 yet.

The Russian system is not an active cancellation system, it attack the radar. Spectra doesn't attack the radar, it manipulates the radar signal itself.

With the current demonetization scam modi has collected enough money to fund rafale's purchase.

We are not in war. We don't want to spread too much money on support, because our budget is streched.
48.5% of 150 planes = 70+ Rafale ready at every moment. Not so bad isn't it?

48.5%...Its Bad...definitely!
and If its costly for French to keep ready Rafale for war as they have more priorities, how could not it costly for India...just imagine.

That 48.5% includes planes that are not flying, grounded because they are not necessary.

Operational availability is 97%.

So true!

The serviceability rate or the availability rate is the number of aircraft ready for missions at any given time. In the case of the French Air Force’s Rafale jets, nearly half of the fleet is on the ground undergoing repairs or maintenance, Jane’s reported on 24 November 2016.

In the French Air Force and Navy, there are 2 different availability rate :
- DT (disponibilité technique/technical availability) is the availability rate with regard to the entire existing fleet.
- DTO (disponibilité technique opérationelle/ operational technical availability) is the ratio between the number of aircraft available and the number of aircraft needed to achieve the planned activity, that is to say the ability to achieve the operational goal, the mission.

The first indicator, DT, is generally around 50% for the Air Force and actually around 30% for the Navy. This is not because there are maintenance issues on the Rafale fleet, this is simply because a part of the existing fleet is not immediately needed to achieve the operational contract: ie a 100 percent DTO rate. France did not need 100 or 150 Rafale immediately available for training and air policing; thus, over a year, a part of the fleet, usually composed of the aircraft that have, at the moment, the highest number of flight hours, is temporarily parked or even sometimes temporarily mothballed at Chateaudun air base. (Similarly, there are no specific maintenance problems with Rafale M, the difference (DT) between Air Force and Navy is mainly due to the ongoing modernization of 10 Rafale F1)
Each country has its own constraints. What is really important and significant is to achieve a high DTO rate. And especially during real operations (like Lybia, Mali ...) when all committed aircraft must operate at maximum efficiency over long periods. In that case the availability rate for the Rafale is close to 100% ;

Here is an official report in french from the French assemblee-nationale (something like a parliament) where you can see a table with DT and DTO on page 29.

How is it taking off without the CAT or was it just a touch-and-go?

For me it's only touch and go, (and maybe even not touch !)
