The Pakistani soldier

Richard J Douglas

It is gratifying to see the new White House team giving more attention to relations with Pakistan. During my recent tenure as deputy assistant secretary of defence for counter-narcotics, and earlier as a US Senate staffer, I had the privilege of making numerous journeys to Pakistan and sponsoring several counter-narcotics initiatives with Pakistan's security forces.

Based upon this experience and my personal observations in Pakistan's rugged border areas, I would like to offer a few comments about a field where loser Pakistan-US cooperation would have an important and immediate impact.

In Pakistan's effort to combat extremism, there is one critically important protagonist too often overlooked when western political leaders press Pakistan to "do more." I refer to the Pakistani soldier. In talking with young Pakistani personnel, whether Army aviators or Frontier Corps leaders, I was struck by the familiarity of their priorities, and their similarity to young Americans serving their own country in the armed forces.

The Pakistani soldiers and aviators I encountered opposed terrorism, and like many Americans, have suffered its effects directly or indirectly. They were proud of their responsibility and resourcefulness, and were open and welcoming to US cooperation.

These soldiers did not speak about grand strategy, existential threats from neighbours, or other issues that occupy the international foreign-policy establishment. Rather, a conversation with these confident, English-speaking professionals is one that any American soldier or armed forces family member would recognise.

They ask: Who will look after my family if I am wounded or lost in combat? How will my children be fed, clothed, educated and housed? What can be done to give us the confidence that our loved ones will be well cared-for in return for the sacrifice we willingly make for our nation?

This discussion is more than rhetorical. This is because another compelling feature of Pakistan's reality as I knew it was that with amazing but unheralded frequency, many Pakistani soldiers and Frontier Corps personnel experienced deadly combat engagements with "miscreants" in Pakistan's border areas. Often these soldiers went into combat in unarmoured – and even unarmed – helicopters and with inadequate or incomplete combat gear. But they went anyway, and willingly.

As a broader conversation on Pakistan unfolds in our country, I urge our leaders and policymakers to remember these soldiers and their families. Let us find ways to make a concerted effort not only to help Pakistan equip and employ its forces properly, but to work with Pakistani leaders to help answer the concerns of those who go into battle uncertain about the fate of their families if the worst should happen.

These concerns are well-known to the American soldiers who will form the core of our cooperative training effort with Pakistan. As a naval reserve officer, I learned during my own deployment to Iraq how well our Army understands the paramount importance of taking care of soldiers and their families. For this reason, I believe that our Army and National Guard are the right institutions, at the right time, to engage more closely with Pakistani counterparts.

I have been fortunate to visit Pakistan frequently enough to formsome fairly well-founded views about this beautiful and capable nation. I have also come to appreciate the first-rate group of Americans, led by Ambassador Ann Patterson, who compose the US country team in Islamabad. But my understanding of Pakistan really began here in America.

The Pakistani diaspora has found a home in our nation and it is thriving here. Pakistan and its children have influenced my own children, and welcomed them – and me – into their American homes. Confident, educated, freedom-loving, and hospitable, Pakistanis do their share to strengthen our nation in ways that earlier generations of newcomers would recognise and applaud.

I am glad that the administration and Congress are committed to deepening our nation's relations and cooperation with Pakistan. Above all, I hope the American people will come to appreciate Pakistan as I did: as a willing and compatible partner.

no offense but the sacrifices and the will of a pakistani soldier is much greater that an american soldiers'

Offense taken. I, as an American, also value the sacrifice made by Pakistan's sons. I also appreciate the professionalism of the Pakistan Armed Forces, but your assessment of my countries soldiers, of their great sacrifice and their professionalism, belies an ignorance of the true situation and nature of the American in uniform. For almost 8 long years now, every night, on every evening news program, the names and faces of America's best and bravest who have been killed in battle that day, is shown and read. Ours is a completely volunteer military. Young people, who could graduate from school and be happy with a new wife or new job and who could live the American dream, instead, have chosen to put on a uniform and serve our country, our America, far, far, from home, their lives changed forever.

American soldier grieves for his dead comrades.

all soldiers of every country love their country and i think all there sacrifices are supreme whether they be a pakistani soldier laying down his life in swat or an american soldier dying in iraq. they all love their country and are willing to sacrifice their lives for it.
lets not get into the discussion of whos sacrifice is greater because i dont think anyone can answer that because it doesnt need to be answered

I have to agree with desertfalcon and kidwaibhai no matter what country you are from rich, poor what ever as a soldier you will alway do your absolute best and sacrifice your life if needed to protect the ones you love. As one who also loves his country and one who knows a little about sacrifice I can tell you there is no such thing as one country saceificed more than another when it comes down to loosing soldiers, for they are not just your commrads they are your brothers who you would give your life for in their place. May God help all of thoes who have fallen for Pakistan and thoes of other nations. May he watch over all of us.

The sad fact of the matter is that the sacrifice of a Pakistani soldier is for and on behalf of the Americans.

And so you should considering the fact that Pakistan's sons are dying for uncle Sam.

.

Maybe I would be able to appreciate your point of view if America were fighting a just war against an equipped enemy on even nearly equal terms.

For almost 8 long years now, every night, on every evening news program, the names and faces of America's best and bravest who have been killed in battle that day, is shown and read.

Where is the bravery in dropping bombs from B52 bombers on women and children? The bravery to be admired is that of those who resist your nations imperialistic aims and objectives with the meager resources they have to hand.

It just shows the stupidity of those cattle like young persons you are referring to that they would give up their lives to fly thousands of miles to occupy another mans country in order to fulfill a corrupt capitalist agenda. Do spare a thought for those young men such as Dilawar who had his life and dreams and ambitions snuffed out at the hands of your so called "best and bravest."

Pakistan's sons are not dying for anything other than Pakistan and to suggest otherwise is disservice to these men in uniform and their families. This debate is pointless. Yes Pakistan has lost more soldiers in the region than NATO/US combined, and these sacrifices are indeed often left unappreciated, even ignored, by the west but by Pakistanis as well.

We should not sink this low and try and degrade American soldiers and their professionalism just like we ourselves and our sacrifices would not like to be belittled. We should be better people and not indulge in this nonsensical and pointless crap.

I'm sure its reassuring and comforting to tell yourself this but anyone who is objective will realise that it simply is not true, the truth is a bitter pill to swallow my friend.

and to suggest otherwise is disservice to these men in uniform and their families.

Please do not try to stifle my argument by using this underhand tactic of emotional blackmail, its not the men in uniform or their families that make the decisions and as such pointing out the harsh realities of international politics is in no way aimed at them personally.
I'm sure many in the Pak army would agree with me wholeheartedly and when I say "I'm sure" I mean I know this with certainty.

You think you're sure, but I KNOW you're wrong. This is not emotional blackmail, it is just an easy way for you to back off from an argument you cannot win. I suggest you take it, because you won't make many friends here if you don’t. The people Pakistan’s soldiers are fighting are Pakistan’s enemies. That is what our soldiers are here for. That is their job and you dishonor them by insisting that they’re dying in vain, fighting an enemy that does not merit extermination. No one has forced them to do anything, they do what they do because they have a sense of responsibility and an understanding of the situation much better than what you do. So I suggest you think carefuly on what you're going to insist on next...

Motivation level of Pakistani soldier is much higher then US and NATO soldiers , that is reason they are serving nation with only 10% of salary of US soldiers.

We need to increase their salary and benefits and quality of training .

Problem is per capita income in Pakistan is very low , 60% of over budget is consumed by defence forces ,we should focus on quality rather then quantity of armed personals.

that's true but not the reason you stated but soldiers of Pakistan fighting for their mother land and American are fighting WOT far from their land and loved ones.WOT really don't have any start or end,no body knows its objective clearly.

You are right there is no end of this war , US actually trained OBL ,they know the danger of not tackling him , they are fighting war for their servival by utilizing all available resources , WOT is more dangrous war then WW1&2.Your enemy is invisible , it is basically war of nerves not conventional war normally soldiers dont like it . That is reason suiciodel cases of US soldiers presently very high.

Americans only fight from B52 and have no bravery?

We only fight for imperialism?

We trained Osama Bin Laden?

fundamentalist, do you actually believe this nonsense?
You want to dishonor my soldiers...fine. Anyone can do that from the safety of the Internet, but you bring dishonor to your soldiers by claiming that Pakistan cannot think or act for itself. I wish people like you would make up their minds as to what is the evil my country does. I'm told on one thread that America controls India. The very next thread and I am being told that America controls Pakistan. The one after that, and now my country is being controlled by Israel, so as it turns out, America actually isn't controlling anybody, we are just as big a pawn as your country in being controlled by the Israelis. On one thread, we evil Americans are getting the Russians to do our bidding and supply India, on the next, the Russians are defeating American interest by backing Iran against us.

Some people need to make up their minds I think.
