The New Pakistan US Relationship (After the Salala Check-Post Attack)

Just now Gilani was on a news conference spewing out all sorts against the army..
Anybody heard him?

This man is so annoyed all of a sudden? Wonder whats the reason? Has the army jumped on his tail by cutting NATO supply routes and refusing t open them?

:) ... with all due respect that realization might not be enough....what i am asking from elites of Pakistan(like you) is what leverage Pakistan has over US that in a relation they can play equal.........................

Pakistan has played its trump card - the supply route blockade. The resolve this time is much stronger than before. So the leverage it offers for the time being must be weighed against the next round of US actions. For now, I think USA is letting Pakistan do what it wants, so that it can reassess its positions, as it weighs its options and formulates a response.

Interesting situation, I must say.

A threat is potent only till the time the recipient of the threat has an option to avoid that becoming a reality..

Every Pakistani knew this already, As far as we work for them we were their friends
When their work is finished or we are not supporting them they will leave us.
They did it many times 1965,1971,1980-1990,and now history is repeating itself in 2012.its better we do not forget it again.

Yes, of course.

Now that the hand has been played, the game will move on. Both USA and Pakistan will need to see how to proceed best.

Given the recent open tussle between the khakis and the achkans, Pakistan has much to sort out before it can even formulate, let alone implement, a coherent game plan.

I worry it will not take advantage of this situation as it should, or can.

The USN has traditionally maintained 2 carrier battle groups in west Asia/east Africa as a part of the Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain. While one CVN has been placed in or near the Red Sea/Persian Gulf, the other has been in the Northern Arabian Sea. The CVNs rotate into this region either through the Atlantic and the Mediterranean or come in from the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. At the end of the cycle they return to San Diego/Norfolk for maintenance etc. This has been the trend for the past decade or so except during periods of conflict when additional CVNs are grouped under the Fifth Fleet.

PS - RCOH is Refueling and Complex Overhaul
- Nothing alarming or extraordinary for two CVNs being located in west Asia/ Arabian Sea.

Thank you. I guess Lincoln will be making a stop over at 5th fleet on its way

"WASHINGTON, Dec 24: The United States has said that it will continue to work with Pakistan towards improving the vitally important bilateral relationship, which saw signficiant challenges throughout the year. The State Department’s comments came amid strains on the bilateral relationship over November 26 NATO cross-border attacks on Mohmand checkposts,

which resulted in death of 24 Pakistani soldiers.“We desire a closer, more productive relationship with Pakistan both militarily and as well as politically. And we’re constantly working to build that closer cooperation.
As I said, we’ve been very forthright in acknowledging that this is a relationship that needs to work,” acting spokesman Mark Toner said.
He was asked as to how confident he felt that 2012 would be better for the relationship between the two countries than the current year, which began with the killing of two Pakistanis by CIA contractor Raymond Davis in Lahore, saw more tensions following the May 2 unilateral U.S. raid on al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Abbottabad and is now ending with differences over findings of an American investigation into November 26 airstrikes.
“We’ve been, I think, pretty candid in saying that there have been some significant obstacles throughout this year in the relationship.
“But at each juncture, we’ve tried to address those challenges and we have recommitted ourselves to working with Pakistan. And we’re going to continue to do that because we believe we need to work with Pakistan. It’s too important. The issues that we face, the challenges we face, are too important,” Toner remarked.
Since it began a high-stakes engagement in the region a decade ago with the 2001 start of war in Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has greatly relied on Pakistan’s support both for security on the porous Pak-Afghan border and transportation of supplies to landlocked Afghanistan.
In return, the U.S. has supported Pakistan with economic and military assistance but there have been differences on several issues related to the lingering Afghan conflict at Pakistan’s western border, which has also impacted on Pakistan’s internal security and economy.
On the findings of the Centcom report into November 26 incident, shared with the media this week, the spokesman said, Washington will continue to offer briefings to senior Pakistani officials on it.
“The report will be published, at some point go public. And we’ve been very forthright in discussing its contents. We’re going to continue to engage with them as we go forward.”
The spokesman said a briefing by head of the Central Command Gen James Mattis to Pakistani military leadership, scheduled for this week, had been postponed due to internal situation in Pakistan.
Questioned about political situation in Pakistan, the spokesman reiterated Washington’s support for democratic process in the country.
“We support the democratic process in Pakistan, we support the constitution and the rule of law, as well as the will of the Pakistani people. We want to -we believe, rather, that this is a matter for the Pakistani people to resolve within their own political process.”

Associated Press Of Pakistan ( Pakistan's Premier NEWS Agency ) - US says it committed to improving ties with Pakistan

The advantages or profits you want Pakistan to reap out of this move, are they economical or moral or military or strategic ??

I don't think Santa will give four gifts at a time.

Why limited relationship shut the **** away , our relation should be on equal and brotherly bases if they want a relation otherwise get lost no support and supplies nor we need your ******* aids we have enough money and wealth and human resource , we just need honest leader .

well the NATO supply is blocked from past one month and so are the drones...so for sure it is not an internal drama...Internal drama was incidents after OBL death...Every single Pakistan politician was vowing that no more violation of sovereignty will be tolerated and within few days things were back to what they were...

but blockade is temporary that for sure. after the matter settles they'll re open it.

Obviously you will survive, even worst cases like Zimbabwe survived the Economic Chaos, then Pakistan will be too. But there would be increasing economic hardship with the passage of every year. In all countries poverty is decreasing but in Pakistan it is increasing, 55% shortage of electricity. Most of the budget is wasted in paying back the debt and with Passage of every year development budget meant for education, health sector and infrastructure is decreasing.

Because Pakistan severed their relation with US but without any proper arrangement for worst days.

Its the dream of almost every indian, but the truth is our own politicians are responsible for today's crisis not U.S.

Pakistan rejects NATO attack report as biased
Last Updated: Wednesday, December 28, 2011
Pakistan Wednesday rejected as biased the US report on the NATO air strikes on two army border checkposts that caused the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers, a media report said.

The Nov 26 air strikes in Mohmand region bordering Afghanistan led to severe strain in the Pakistan-US relations.

The US investigation report was rejected on the basis that with Brigadier General Stephen Clark as head, the investigation could never bring out unbiased findings, the Online news agency reported.

Pakistan dismissed the report, saying Clark has been linked to the strategic team involved in the attack.

Clark was an "inappropriate" choice to carry out the investigation as a neutral party, the media report said.

The Pentagon said an American official in Islamabad has delivered the report to Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani.

Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas confirmed receiving the report.

The full report from the joint US-NATO investigative team was not released publicly to allow time for the Pakistani leadership to read the findings first, the Pentagon spokesman said in Washington.

"We wanted General Kayani to be able to see the entire thing," he said. It was "an appropriate professional courtesy" to Kayani, he added.

An unclassified version of the report has been released by the military's Central Command on its website. It reportedly revealed that an American AC-130 gunship flew two miles into Pakistani territory.
