What's new

the myth of punjab domination

Well your judgement is wrong, it's not about leaders ethnicity that counts.

The economic hub, industrial base, goverance and all beauracracy is 90% filled by Punjabis and educated Punjabis....and certainly Punjab being the largest & most high in numbers MUST get the highest shares too.
Even this is not the good reason. The actual reason behind the supposedly Punjab dominance is the national assembly seats. Punjab alone has more national assembly seats than the combined seats of the remaining three provinces. As a result, whichever party dominates Punjab will be in favorable position of making the government in Islamabad. Legally there is nothing wrong with that but it definitely puts the other provinces or ethnicities at some disadvantage. Ironically, Quid-e-Azam demanded some 40% (don't remember correctly so will be thankful if somebody makes it correct) representation of Indian Muslims in the assembly so that they will not be over-ruled by the majority Hindus. However, since this (his demand of 40% seats whereas Muslims were less than 25% perhaps) went against the parliamentary politics, his demand was not entertained by the Congress, which eventually resulted in the division of the British India. Yes, this has been tried to be balanced up by allocating equal number seats to all the provinces in the upper house (the Senate) but because the national assembly and senate's elections are not synchronized, party (or coalition) enjoying majority in the NA also gets it in the senate eventually.

They didn't start as developed states. Any advanced economy you pick, you would see a robust local govt system and devolution of power in its governance fabric. I, don't know you have lived in Pakistan or not, however under Musharraf we had a very good LG system which lead to greater funds distribution and infrastructure projects spread to far flung villages!

Pakistan not only needs almost 30 or so provinces on administrative lines but also needs to create a robust and self sustaining LG system linked with a centralized e-govt apparatus, similar to military's C4I.
pakistan can do what america does…
have a state a federal government, then a state, then a county, then local city or village governments…

countries with more government bureaucracy always have more corruption and more money being wasted….

America doesn't have the social fabric we have. Its a new colony, we are here for 9000 years! - What we need is something that is effective yet not divisive.

Pakistan needs smaller administrative units. Around 27.

This will integrate Pakistan together for good, Inshallah.

We are all Pakistanis. Just remember that.
can't agree more .... poor ppl from southern punjab have to travel large distances to reach capital for their work same goes for sindh and balochistan.... lets decentralize the power.... we need more provinces badly....

Wasn't Liaquat Ali Khan a Punjabi ?
He belonged to urdu speaking group

the recent election proves that pakistan's fate is decided in punjab. You need to break punjab or should have further devolution of power from center.
First of all its not your problem hindu.... secondly if punjab is divided even then fate of elections is dictated by punjab residents because they have majority deal with it we all are pakistanis ... grow above your ethnicities and small mentality......

Haryanvi, delhiites, Rajasthanis, Gujaratis are called urdu speaker in Karachi. Liaqat wasn't a Punjabi.

Divide Punjab into 3 or 4 provinces, only then other ethnic groups would stfu. India divided their Punjab ages ago into Himachal and Haryana. Although a division of Punjab might generate some animosity between different linguistic/dialect groups.

Doubt it will mean anything, punjabi society is based on biraderis then linguistic nationalism. Thats why i wonder if it will mean anything at all, i think N will still win most seats in Punjab.

So it is proved that Pakistan is not punjab dominated. also ppl complaining about that punjab is given the biggest share in nfc. so what's wrong they have the largest population and biggest revenue generators and still they leave some part for their genuine share for smaller provinces.
reality is its our politicians that are keeping you backward not punjab. everyday i see ppl complaining punjab and i think its my responsibilty as pakistani to correct them.
Who told you that sikandar mirza was pathan?. He was bengali and would be mirza (mughal/turk) by caste. Yahya khan was qizalbash not pashtun.

Linguistic nationalism is quite widespread in South Punjab. It's on the rise in North Punjab. A lot of North Punjabis now see each other as Potoharis rather than belonging to some other tribe or something etc. In more northern regions of Potohar, people don't even call themselves Punjabi. Like people of Rawalpindi, Murree and Attock almost always call themselves Potohari rather than Punjabi. People of Chakwal and Jhelum call themselves Punjabi usually, but the educated ones know that they're Potohari rather.

And I'll admit, I get a bit confused myself when people call me a "Punjabi". I don't think we ever used Punjabi as an ethnic demonym. The term Punjabi reminds me of that Lahore and Sikh culture, where they do all that bhangra and stuff. It all sounds pretty alien to me to be honest, like I don't feel any cultural similarities with those guys. With that said, I have no issue with staying in Punjab, however if other provinces like Hazara and South Punjab get made, then I'd like a Potohar province too. And yes, noon will win in Potohar.

True, you guys are called potoharis rather then punjabis by us. For outsiders all these groups are punjabis. Though there is no movement to make any potohar province. But if KPK is going to be divided then why not punjab. I personally want hazara province to piss of afghanis. At least then they will stop including Hazara in their maps.

6 provinces out of punjab seem right. Hopefully punjabi card will die with new provinces.

Tribes are still important, only maybe in urban centers they are not. And cities are multi ethnnic anyways. And 70-80% of potohar population live in rural areas.
