The Kerala Model: Probably the right way forward

you are right kerala is not a good roll model for industrial base and infra structure development. some of the unique reasons i think is,
labour trade unions are very much aggressive here, any industrialist will run away with the kind of demands and attitude they have.

kerala is a very small state and highly populated, so any kind of new project will be met with protests from people who loose their land, and price of land also is very high here.

I am not denying this things but the fact of the matter is Kerala eventhough a small state with its GDP/capita less than many other states in India was able to achieve HDI rivaling first world countries.

India is ppl driven country. Democracy has not matured yet in India. It is universal truth that UDF and LDF in kerla has provided good basic infrastructure (Education, Medicine and PDS).

Having said that I will say that Kerla guys/ladies have good opportunity to earn good money. Once you are rich its very unlikely that your descendants will become poor. Once you are rich you can access good facilities and hence the Human development indices will touch the roof.

My point here is simple, Other state can take some point of Kerla model, but saying that it will be role model is like "Patting your back". What is good for kerla can not hold good for Gujrat and so on...

Pros
Kerala got good medical facilities through out the state...Hospitals and all are well equipped...
The primary education is good..the governments policy of education to all children and all...
People in kerala are better understanding than much of the other neighboring states....
English language can be used throughout Kerala since most of them are able to communicate in English...i said most..
Crime rate comparatively low and peaceful state...
Lots of intelligent and good movies are made in Kerala..As u can see the national awards are dominated by kerala and bengal movies...
Cons
IT industry is on the rise but not comparable to other states....The progress is halted by the lack of policies of kerala government..eg, Internet city in kochi going on for like 3-5years...
No major universities or research centre like IITs or IIM..eventhough centre alloted IIT to kerala but the government couldnt find space/land for the accommodation of IIT and talks are going on..policy paralysis...
Lack of Roads, motor ways and Infrastructure...Roads and traffic in kerala are a mess, Improving it not easy because of the density of population...
Labor charges in Kerala are extremely high compared to other states in India...I think kerala has got the highest labor charges..
Manufacturing Industry is very small compared to other states...Government is not focusing in that area...

I might have missed some areas and i could also stated things wrong...

On the topic, there is no "model" that can be applied in such an indiscriminate manner. Every state has got some great ideas and some not so great ones. The best approach is to learn from everyone and innovate while applying those lessons to your home turf.

I think it was in the first quarter of 2010 that Marathi films got higher revenues than Bollywood. The only problem is that despite Marathi being a native language for me, when there aren't any subtitles I have an easier time understanding Hindi movies because the Marathi movies use "shudha" Marathi.

If there is no industries in Kerala where are all those educated graduates get employment........ Oh. wait, they move to other states to get jobs. Kerala is successful because of remittance from abroad and other states. No other state gets more remittance per share of their GDP than Kerala.

Most of the educated people their first preference will be for a central gov or state gov job. If not then the first option for every educated malayalees who prefer to go outside Kerala will be to any western countries, second will be gulf and it will be only the third option to go for other states in India. The reason is simply to accumulate more wealth and better standard of living.
The upper middle class will prefer western countries, the middle class will prefer the last two option depending on his preference.

Dont you think the unreasonably high amount of Malayalis in Gulf sending in money is also a reason for that ?

There are also Tamils in Gulf, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe & America and TN boasts of a bigger Industrial base as well as GDP/capita than Kerala, then why do you think then TN lags behind Kerala in HDI development.
