In previous parts of Batman joker was always a main character, its the evil genius that creates havoc in the comic...
In the dark Night, it was the same character..but done by a great actor, his deep involvement in the role make this movie a masterpiece...and an example for upcoming batman movies.

Oh BTW if i am not mistaken Johnny Depp is going to be next joker....what a great actor too!

The clown make himself the fool for your entertainment. The joker make YOU the fool for his entertainment. That is why the deck of cards have 'Jokers' instead of clowns.

That would be an excellent choice. But there is a petition by some to have the Joker character suspended forever because these people feel the character has been played to the max by Ledger and none can match.

Yes, good point....its difficult to replace his work. Johnny Depp is famous from his 'out of the world' characters, his role in Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the chocolate factory, Alice in the wonderland and Pirates of Caribbean series are some examples.

His fans have done alot of work on this topic.

But replacement of this man is really difficult to digest..

The Times of India has published a few more details on the filming that will take place in India for Christopher Nolan's third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises:

The director will be in Jodhpur to shoot "The Dark Knight Rises" with none other than Christian Bale. However, no other Hollywood actors from the film will be part of this shooting schedule in India.

Incidentally, Nolan had come down to India in December to scout for locations in Jodhpur. That was when he chose to shoot in Jodhpur's Mehrangar Fort. The main crew will start arriving from May 1. Christian Bale is expected to arrive in India on May 4 or May 5. Though permissions have been sought for shooting the film for the whole of May, the unit will shoot in India for only two days – May 6 and May 7.

Incidentally, hotels in Jaipur and Jodhpur have been booked for the crew. Says a source, "Nolan had scouted locations in both Jodhpur and Jaipur. But, he fell in love with Jodhpur and decided to return to film here. They are coming with a very small unit of around 15 people and will be shooting here for two days. There are no Bollywood actors being cast in the movie. But, local actors and crew members might be roped in. The unit wants to use the beautiful fort as the background for the movie. However, nothing is known yet whether Jodhpur will feature as an Indian city in the movie or not."

It might be a little bit more acceptable if they can find someone who resembles Ledger i.e. Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Actors routinely gains and loses weight for their roles. Just look at Bale in Batman and in The Fighter. Acting is also dynamic, so as long as the actor has reasonable likeness to Ledger, with makeup he can visually pass the test. The real question is whether he can play the character as well as how Ledger portrayed and set the standard for the Joker character. Allegedly, Bale relied more on Keaton than Clooney and Kilmer on how to portray the new Batman, in essence, Keaton set the standard for what the Batman should be: a psychopath/sociopath. But on our side. For now.

The next actor to play the Joker will not deviate much from how Ledger portrayed the character. The shock's effects is still too fresh after the years from Nicholson's portrayal of the character. Nicholson's portrayal was 'clownish'. Ledger's portrayal was outright evil as a 'joker' or 'jokester' or 'prankster' should be or expected to be.
