The Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad (ITI) train is expected to resume operations, authorities indicated after a meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The national railways of Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan have mutually agreed to resume regular operations of the ITI container train. As per reports, all requirements for the railway triad have been fulfilled.

In the 10th edition of the joint meetup held in Istanbul, Turkey’s Transport Minister, Adil Karaismailoglu, informed the trilateral economic bloc that the ITI railway project will be relaunched next year.

Until recently, various test journeys were carried out, but the transit line was not regularized with pending infrastructure development. Now, growing changes in the diplomatic landscape between the three countries have allowed the railway operation to resume. All three countries have agreed to unified tariffs and a steady timetable.

Initially launched in 2009, the ITI framework exists within the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Currently, all three countries are actively promoting the availability of the train to make sure it is operational as soon as possible.

Can it be used for tourism as well? I thought it was mainly for cargo transport.

Once the connectionm is established it gives the potential for further consolidation including as you say tourism. I love West Asia [the region coterminous to the influence of the Persian Empires of the past] which is for me Istanbul-Tehran-Kabul-Islamabad.

will remain on paper like always
Not really. Things are changing. Pakistan has began to settle with Afghanistan and Iran. Turkey has always been close to Pakistan. One other factor you ignore. Slowly Istanbul and Turkey are begining to ex-pat Pakistani community. This will grow as we move forward. As I always have said. Paks will never accept a secular state but will slice their testicles to migrate to one for economic reasons. That now is happening in Turkey. A trickle is slowly turning to stream which will turn into a torrent over the next decade. This will create a large market for ex-pats to visit Pakistan by rail.

Also it is well know fact. Transport links not only meet demand but create new demand. Meaning when a reliable link exists people are encouraged to use it for variety of reasons. Also a new vista of economic opportunities opens. So a Istanbul-Tehran-Islamabad link has great future potential.

.
let’s get a high-speed train network that links the region,
Could be a big play for influence.

can I get someone to second that motion?

. .
it started in 2009 and then what happened ?

we could have made billions over the last 10 years

bet they were arguing over the colour of the train
