The Indian Ocean riposte (Stunning news about the S3 & S4 & S4*)

How much?
Aridhman will have twice number of standard K4 missile tube while follow on submarine will have four times number of tubes considering current K4 loadout on Arihant boat.

@Abingdonboy Such excitement among the children. Makes me nostalgic.

BARC has yet to to even put a new PWR through its paces on land; do not underestimate the complexity involved and the resultant time taken to accomplish the design and deployment of a new reactor.

There is indeed a chance (as to whether its a good chance, well dunno) that the 3rd Arihant class submarine might be able to deploy 8 K-4 SLBMs. Such an increase in the hardware being carried might come with an attendant increase in tonnage, either way those who think that the S-2 weighs around 8-10000 tonnes need to stick to the established data.

@Capt.Popeye SSBNs are all well and good, but I am yet to see any indication of the GOI changing its policy on deployment of nuclear weapons. I am sure you know what I mean.

I know who you are, your post style and content betrays your identity.

Also, the Virginia class says hello:wave:.

This is and will remain the world's best SSN, especially as newer blocks come online - each featuring design differences such as the Virginia Payload Module and a new Horseshoe shaped sonar instead of the traditional spherical-water backed shape. Also, considering certain mechanical differences, such as engine design, as well as tactics and doctrine - patrol versus ambush attacks, Soryu quieting systems will not be as effective on an SSN as they are on an SSK. Why would Soryu's engine help an Indian SSN? How would its anechoic tiles perform on a fast moving patrol sub - like an ocean going SSN, versus an ambush hunter like an SSK? Too many unanswered questions needing to be answered first before making any grandiose claims about being the "most feared."

Let's hold off on the "most feared" moniker. Nothing a women hates more than premature excitement.

You've got it wrong, the preceding Seawolf class subs are even more "feared" than the Virginia class boats.

Two points, first can't jump to 180 mw in so much less time without compromising on overall aspect. Second 8 k4 slbm will be deployed on 2nd Arihant class sub onward.

We shall have to see, the 2nd sub has been under construction for some time, the decision to increase the payload may have come at a time when the construction had progressed along to quite some extent. Yes, we cannot jump to a 150-180 MW reactor so quickly, it shall take time.

Two things can run parallel ....
The construction of next gen subs need not be halted for lack of reactor at the moment ...
BARC had enough experience in designing , testing first rwo LWRs ....the may very well beyond learning curve .
I am not saying that it will be as simple as just doubling the capacity of existing LWRs ...just that the head start and momentun generated should enable BARC to come out with bigger reactors within projected time frame .

but i agree the news look too good to be true ...

we will know a decade later ...where we actually stand ...

My heart tells me it's doable ....My brain tells me too many things have to fall in line to happen that ...

besides it is very crucial for country ...

Anys source for claim?

Anys source for claim?
Very first post of this thread is the source apart from the detail given in Wikipedia. If one remember correctly. It was finance ministry insistence which let to placing of double number of VLS units in the SUB. IN considered first four boats demonstrater only. So in 2008 P Chidambaram put his foot on this to make sure further boats get more teeth. Same happened in Kolkata class destroyer also if anybody would try to see through. Anyway it is one of most secret project in India and multiple sources are hard to come. Hope you understand. Thank you.

You mean Aridhman wil have 8 K 4s?

what will be the advantage of a 3500 km K4 if we are not able to target major Chinese cities even from bay of Bengal????? we cannot send our submarine to south china sea......can we????? so isn't it better to arm it with 12 1500 km K15 so that we can have deterrence only against Pakistan???

It can also be used with safe distance from China with K4, and K5 is in development

Yes. That too thanks to P Chidambaram insistence for releasing the funds.

Even by that logic K15 isn't enough to cover all Pakistan theoretically. So we option there. Second point even a hundred km range missile armed with nuke bomb offers deterrence, forget about 3500 km range K4. More longer range, more standoff range one gets. China isn't at a stage where they can sweep even 2000 km away from the mainland fully with ASW forces. So we are opening new options which will keep Chinese engaged in finding loopholes in the system. It's like a cat and mouse game where no body wins in the end. Thank you.
